Sebastian was hardly impressed. He imagined the parties of the upper classes to be much more decedent that this, uncontrolled and wanton. Everyone seemed sadly enough to be on their best behaviour. He spotted some faces he knew from dealings at the bank but he knew there were a lot more names here tonight he could not put faces to whose money had gone through the accounts he’d set up for Sergius.

There were spirits at least and plenty of them. Red wine too though Sebastian never touched a drop if he could help himself, it brought back memories from a childhood best left forgotten.

Reuben had been invited, although he had no idea why. The closest he had ever been to a gathering of this sort was once, at Judge Burnbridge's house, when he had stayed late to help Fabian with his Latin, and by the time he left the Judge's dinner guests were already enjoying pre-dinner drinks. He had left by the servant's door, not wishing to intrude.

Here, now, he felt like an intruder. Without his cassock, he seemed to have no identity, and so he stayed close to the drinks table, topping up his courage, lest he was spoken to.

Spotting Sebastian, however, sapped everything from him; the colour from his face and the breath from his lungs, causing him to choke on his wine. Drawing attention to himself was the last thing he wanted to do, but the coughing fit seemed to be drawing a lot of attention from the guests.

Sebastian glanced over to see how was making that dreadful noise, and then fought to keep the surprised from his face. He waited a few moments until the man had calmed himself before making his way across the room, not wanting to draw attention to them.

"No wonder this party is so dull." He commented dryly, pulling his handkerchief from a breast pocket and handing it to Rueben. "Clean yourself up."

It felt odd to see him here of all places.

Reuben didn't know what to say, taking the handkerchief and wiping his mouth with it, praying silently that something would happen, something, and Sebastian would go away. "Thank you." He managed, clearing his throat again, trying not to be attracted to the boy again. He had corrupted him, made the boy unclean, a sinner, and day after day he had tortured himself because of that foolish, wicked, uncontrolled lust. But Sebastian could not have done badly for himself, he was dressed well (much better than a parish deacon, at any rate) and was no doubt wealthy or important to be invited here. Reuben was merely invited as a parish representative. "I.... You've been well, Sebastian?"

"I am doing well, thank you. I have a job at the bank and it pays considerably better than one would expect." Sebastian said slowly, not really sure what he could say. He'd not expected to see Rueben again, ever. He thought he'd left that part of his life behind when he left the orphanage. "What are you doing here? I would have expected you to be at some seaside parish by now, unless you left the Church." Or were thrown out.

"Leave the Church?" Reuben said, in a close to horrified voice. Without the Church, he had nothing, no family, no education, no employment, no faith. Even without his cassock tonight he felt like half a person, a shadow of himself. "No, I haven't left. I work this parish. I'm deacon of the local Church." He explained, slightly embarrassed at his early tone, and now trying to sound casual, as if he belonged here.

"You landed on your feet." Sebastian commented dryly, looking around at Reuben's parishioners. The collection plate must be the richest in London. "It must be nice to come to this from such humble beginnings."

“I suppose you must be quite the catch to some of the young ladies here tonight.” He said, tone even. “Or is it young gentlemen you still prefer?”

Reuben couldn't help but choke again, surprised now by the young man's forwardness. He had not made the boy like this, had he, he had not ruined what had once been such a sweet, beautiful child and made him into... into this?

"I don't think this is the best place to discuss the past and old mistakes, Sebastian, I really don't think it's the time nor the place."

"I wasn't talking about the past," Sebastian said curtly. "I was simply asking if you were perusing a romance openly, or if it was something clandestine? I think I of all people should be allowed to ask."

Reuben shook his head, wanting to turn and run away, just as Daniel must have wanted to do when met with the Lions. "I'm not pursuing anything, Sebastian. I have my work and it keeps me very busy." He explains. "I'm sorry about... about what happened, but we were both young then and no harm was ever meant, no harm was ever meant."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow, not sure how he felt about Rueben dwelling on that time. True, it was hardly a grand moment for the man he was sure, but there had been a lot worse than Rueben there who’d done a lot worse things. Rueben had just taken affection to far.
“I’m sure you didn’t.” He said stiffly.

Reuben nodded, finishing off his glass of wine with much more speed then he was used to. "Good. Good. Best we all forget about it. Misadventures of youth..." He mumbled, refilling his glass. "Did not harm to anyone..."

"You were hardly a youth in your misadventures." Sebastian reminded him. "I was twelve and you were eighteen. I think far old enough to know better."

Frankly, Lord Hurst was glad to have escaped the talons of Georgina Rochester. How the woman had ever found a husband he did not know, although he had distant memories of her being a rather attractive woman, but still as sharp-tongued. Still, a strong drink would cure him of the upset she had caused.

There was a young man there he did not recognise, a dark haired, pale skinned and with a delicate but sharp jaw that Hurst couldn't help but find eye-catching. "Have you not found anything to your tastes?" He asked, pouring himself a brandy.

Sebastian glanced up, rather suprised to find their host talking to him. He'd thought Beth was dealing with the man.
"I have my Lord, it's simply that dancing with young ladies is not my idea of a good time." He said, hoping that did not come out rude, but he'd heard himself and the way he sounded.

Hurst laughed. Had he not moments before suffered the sharp tongue of Georgina, he might not have been so amused. "Dancing can become very dull, I admit." He said, "Perhaps I could find you a drink, to take your mind off of your dilemma until I can provide you with other entertainment? I would hate for you to think me an ill host."

Sebastian nodded, hesitating to ask "Yes, a drink would be lovely, but no red wine, please." He licked his lips, looking around the ballroom nervously for Beth or Sergius. "I wouldn't think that."

"Ah." Lord Hurst smiled, "A man after my own heart. I can't stand the stuff, thank god the damn French made it unfashionable." He smiled, pouring the boy a brandy instead and handing it over. "Try that. I imagine it's only ten times your age." He grinned, taking a grateful swallow from his own brandy glass. "So, young man, if dancing is not to your tastes, what would you rather be doing?"

Sebastian took the glass gratefully, sipping at it and watching Lord Hurst carefully, trying to work out what he was about. True, Sergius had spoken to both of them at length about their host but Sebastian had assumed Beth would keep the man’s attention for most of the evening. He didn’t like to think she’d failed or that Lord Hurst was some how immune to her charms. He snorted and shook his head. “Are you really giving your guests brandy that’s older than twenty-two years? You’re spoiling them.”

“What interests me? Fine liquor,” he said, holding his glass up as if to toast to the man. “Good company and conversation, a fine cigar after dinner and the pleasures of the flesh. What every other young man likes, no?”

"Drink a brandy that's under thirty years old? My dear young man, I'd rather leave my estates to a washer-woman." He smiled, "Although perhaps this particuluar bottle is not ten times your age. Perhaps double, but not much more. But I have others, whole cases, some hundred and fifty years old or more. A fine liquor is worth waiting for, even if it is only your descendants will enjoy it. You should lay down a bottle or so now, if you haven't already. Perhaps I should show you my collection?"

"Well, I do hope I can provide at least one of those requirements... would a cigar before dinner upset you terribly?"

"Lay down a bottle or two? I'm afraid I can hardly afford to buy good Brandy as it is, and I rent my accommodation so I have no wine cellar to put it in. My land lady is one of those dreadful anti-drink reformists."

"I think I could have a cigar before dinner, yes. It wouldn't upset me too much, providing it is a very fine cigar but I would expect nothing less from you."

Lord Hurst snorted slightly. "You have my great pity, sir. I would find such accommodation distasteful to the extreme. I beg of you, drink as much as you wish tonight, and, should you ever wish it, you must keep your liquors here." He said, gesturing the young man out of the ballroom, down the corridor, and then to a door, opening it and taking a candle from the little shelf within the door, lighting it and passing it to the young man, before taking a candle and lighting it for himself, and guiding the youth down. "You will forgive me, but as yet I am quite ignorant of your name." He said, lighting more candles when they reached the bottom of the steps, and glanced around the racks of wine and the two large barrels against one wall. "The cellar at Bailston is more extensive, of course, but there is still room here to be utilised."

"That's a very kind offer to make." Sebastian said, not adding the thought that plagued him which was what Lord Hurst would require in return. "I'm Sebastian." He said, not wanting to reveal his last name which would immediately reveal that he did not belong there. The Aristocracy all knew each other's names and titles and his did not fit at all.

"Bailston?"

"Bailston Abbey. The family home." Hurst said, moving to the racks built into the wall, studying several over the bottles by pulling them from their places, before selecting one he liked, and holding it out to the young man, after gesturing for Sebastian to set his Brandy glass down on the top of one of the barrels. "What do you think of that, Sebastian?" He asked, after giving the boy time enough to look over the label.

Sebastian looked the label over, not sure if he should be excited at the prospect of a glass or if Lord Hurst simply wanted someone with who he could discuss the vintage and show off his collection to.
"That's very impressive." He said slowly. "No doubt laid down by some great-grandfather, no? Are you saving it for the wedding of your first child? Or maybe the first grandchild?"
