Moonlighting and mischief-making
Subject: That boy looks awfully familiar.
Who: Mary Roper. Evonne Regnier
Where: A pub in London, backdated to last time Yves was in London.
Warnings: it's Yves/Evonne and Mary? Cross-dressing, bad ideas and girls hitting on girls pretending to be boys pretending to be hitting on girls?
Open to: Batman Evonne Regnier

One plus of being unemployed and living with your much older and slightly criminal brother who wasn't home most nights was that you got a chance to do as you pleased. Aside from the housekeeper glowering at you and probably keeping a list of transgressions to inform your brother of at his earliest convenience, of course. But Harry hadn't been informed, and Mary hadn't found a job (it looked like Lady Stanley's friends had told their friends and so forth) and auditions were a slow process when you didn't have a sponsor or a list of previous engagements.

It was another in a series of late auditions that sent Mary down this particular street. She wasn't in Slater's territory (and thanks be for that what with relations 'tween him and Harry being what they were), and she wasn't in Harry's (thanks be for that what with her not knowing yet who was his and who wasn't). She slipped into the pub, not quite sure what she was doing but thinking maybe it was time to explore the other option on her list. One night, one man. At least, she could try it... her ma hadn't never seemed to have much of a problem in that and she tried hard to remember just how her mum had acted to see if she could somehow create those effects.

Mary slipped into the pub quiet as she could manage and looked around. she wanted to see how others did this business first.  One boy who looked like he couldn't be much older than her caught her eye and she frowned as she watched him for amoment. He didn't look quite like one of Harry's but you never knew...

"'Allo, poppet." The words were slurred and Mary spun to look at the man. His breath was enough to knock you down and hold you there but his build weren't near so big. Still, he was edging closer to her and Mary wasn't keen on that idea. "What you doin' here? You ain't even growed yet..."

She straightened her shoulders. "None o' your concern, sir. Go on back to your cups and leave a girl be."

"Oh-ho, 'ow d'ya like that, she's got it all down, she does. Bet you ain't ever been down the alley out back,  neither?"

Mary's eyes narrowed, but her voice stayed pleasant. This wasn't her talking now, it was the daughter of Peribanou, the half-djinn girl who could hold herself in the midst of the Dark King's court and not be frightened. These were not djinn, just goblins and goblins could not scare a djinn. "'Course not. I ain't that type o' girl and you don't got the pockets for me. You want that alley it'll be extra anyway."

The man's hand clamped down on her arm. "Says who?"

Mary's eyes flicked to the boy she'd seen earlier. "You best let go, sir. Wouldn't want him to have to fetch Big Jon now would you?"

The drunk's eyes clouded with confusion. "'oo's he 'gain?"  Mary slipped her arm out of his grasp. Leaving him to seek his friends and inquire after Big Jon, Mary slid away and mixed into the crowd. It was easy enough to get to the boy's side.

"Good evening," she said when she was nearly even with his shoulder. "Don't suppose you'd fancy a bit of fun?"

Up close the boy was even more familiar. He looked so much like Evonne... whose letter Mary really ought to finish writing. She did remember her friend had a brother or two, but why would any of them be in this place? Her heart was racing, and there wasn't anything to stop the blush that threatened... but the daughter of a djinn could not fear. She could do this.

Mary slanted her eye and cocked her head in the coquettish manner that her mother had always used, but couldn't help a gasp of shock when the boy spoke with a French accent. "I mean..." She looked more closely at the boy's clothes and the way he seemed so ill at ease here. Something was definitely not quite fitting. Maybe he was some lord's son out for a glimpse at the rest of the world? Her lips turned upward just a little. The boy's discomfort was reassuring somehow- she wasn't the only one not used to this maybe.

"I think we ought to find someplace quieter, love. Looks like you could do with a bit less o' this place." Mary reached out to touch his arm and stepped just a little bit closer. A glimpse down a girl's neckline never hurt anybody.

This was weird. Too weird. Mary was...propositioning her? Evonne struggled to keep her face calm and not give herself away. It wasn't easy. She looked Mary over - was that the wrong thing to do? Mary looked kind of like...oh god, that couldn't be happening. That was ridiculous. Mary wasn't that kind of girl...was she? Would she take Evonne's glance at her low neckline the wrong way? This was way too bizzare. Evonne frantically searched her brain for a way out of this excruciatingly awkward situation.

Maybe Mary had been reading her mind - or rather, the uncomfortable look on her face - when she suggested they leave the pub. "Oui, bon. Good idea. Let's go." Evonne took Mary's hand with such fervor it could be mistaken for enthusiasm, and then lead her forcefully out of the pub. She pushed past the bodies that filled the pub, pulling Mary behind her. She knew how this looked. It didn't matter. She had to get herself and her friend out before anything else happened. Once they were outside, Evonne looked around for a safe place where they could talk without being overheard. There really was no such thing, but the best thing she could think of was to pull Mary into a nearby alley. At least this lessened their chances of being heard.

Evonne pressed the back of her hand against her head. She had been so nervous, she was starting to perspire. She let out a sigh of relief and turned back to Mary, her eyes slanted with concern.

Mary smiled as the boy did exactly what she'd hoped. He actually did! An appraising once over and Mary's grin widened as he grabbed her hand. This was easier than she'd thought. Quick as you like, he was all but pulling her through the crowd and out of the pub. One of the older girls gave her a wink as she went past.

The alley was dark and Mary couldn't help a sigh. Blast, the alley. She'd sort of hoped he wasn't one for dark and dim and cold walls. But it would work. She turned to the boy expectantly, and felt a stab of pity about how nervous he looked. "Is it... it's not your first time is it? You shouldn't worry if it is. I haven't actually done this before- like this, anyway. But it's not anything to worry yourself 'bout."

"Er...Non, Je suis desolee. Je pense que....shit," Evonne started, realizing that her nerves had caused her to slip back into French. She stuffed her hands into her pockets, suddenly conscious of how feminine they were. The battle in her head was distracting. Half of Evonne wanted to just get things over with, reveal herself to Mary, put her secret out there so that this situation wouldn't have to be so awkward. The other half thought of her brother, her dear brother, for whom she was risking her life. Would revealing her secret endanger him as well? Would all her work have been for nothing? Evonne thought she could trust Mary, but every day she spent as Yves confirmed the fact that trustworthy people were hard to find. Mary was Evonne's friend, but she could also be Yves' enemy.

Evonne searched for the right thing to say. "I'm sorry, mademoiselle, I'm just...not terribly sure....how to...." Evonne trailed off, her eyes leaving Mary's face to look down the alley. She hadn't noticed until just then that the footsteps in the distance were coming closer. It could be nothing, Evonne told herself as she tried to calm down, but then again, it could be dangerous. There was a pretty high chance that the footsteps coming down the alleyway were malicious. She wasn't sure if they were in a safe area or not. The only thing she could do so that whoever was approaching wouldn't question or look any further was...

Without thinking about it any further, Evonne forcefully grabbed Mary by the shoulders and pulled her close, smashing their lips together in a rough kiss. She wrapped her arms tightly around her friend's waist, keeping her close so that she couldn't escape. Evonne didn't break away until she heard the footsteps disappear. When she finally let Mary go, her eyes were wide as her brain tried to rationalize what she had just done.

"Shit..." and without noticing it, Evonne's voice had slipped up an octave into her normal, feminine tone. She clasped her hands over her mouth, completely shocked, as she watched for her friend's reaction.
