THE FUNERAL
Subject: Lord John Wexley IV's memorial.
Where: The Wexley family home.
Who: Daphne Wexley
Warnings: N/A
Open to: everyone who would have attended the funeral.

"...Lord John Oliver Wexley IV was buried today, but his spirit will live on in the rest of us... Amen.." finished the priest as he crossed the grave and then there was silence for a few moments. The first noise came from Lady Wexley, letting out a bellow of sobs that was obviously for show but no one would dare confront her about it. Daphne stood in between her brother, Johnny, and Daniel Perkins, trying her best to hold in any emotions that were fighting their way to the surface. Tears streamed down her face, but she made no noise, simply stared straight ahead and made eye contact with no one.

The party moved to the Wexley's family home where the guests were able to meet, discuss, and remember the passing of a very important man. Refreshments had been set up next to a rather large painting of John Wexley IV. Plenty of chairs and sofa's and places for people to sit and converse. Though, the object of the after party was to uplift the deceased and speak about him, but like any other party, everyone had their own objectives as to being there.

Daphne stood at the picture of her father, holding the glass of wine that Daniel had given her, not moving. She didn't to move, show emotion, talk, eat or drink. Knowing, though, that her mother was pretending to be completely beside herself, it was up to Daphne to be the hostess. Thank God for Johnny, though. He took up most of the duties himself.

As Katherine looked out the window onto the grounds of the Wexley home, she recalled all of the memories - both good and bad - of her childhood there. There was, of course, all of her jaunts with Daphne, the times when Johnny and Miles, Lysander and Peter would chase them all around the gardens while Abigail and Edith complained that they'd muss their clothes, Ella was still too young to run about with the older children, and Eward walked around proudly, above such hysterics. And, of course, the days when she would come in the wake of her father's death, just to feel that she had a real family, not a brother with an adult's responsibilities thrust upon his shoulders and a mother too destroyed to console.

She was so lost in her thoughts that she barely registered Eward's voice from behind her; she had seen him at the service and was not entirely surprised that he approached her now. But her mind and her heart were elsewhere entirely.

"I don't know," Katherine replied simply, her voice just above a whisper.

Feeling the need to comfort her in her time of grief, Eward made sure that they were rather secluded and shielded from view before he gently touched her arm, sliding it down so he could entwine their hands. He hoped she felt something positive from the act, for it comforted him even though he was not grieving.

"I know you were close to him..." he said softly, lowering his head. "I just... wanted to be sure you were... alright."

Katherine's entire body was numb, immune, as if forcing all feeling away to protect herself from grief, but she felt Eward's fingers on her arm, then his hand clasped with hers. She allowed it, knowing that his body shielded the small intimacy from view, and that they were in a quiet enough room to not be bothered, even by the few guests in their company. But in her determination to remain strong, she did not look at him.

"I...I am not all right, but...but thank you," Katherine replied, her voice still raspy and quiet, showing her weakness even if her actions did not.

Eward had no idea how to console someone in their time of grief as nothing usually worked with his own. He had never truly dealt with grief, certainly not with someone else's, and that it was Katherine made it so much harder. All he wanted to do was kiss her, but he could hardly do that in the middle of a funeral party. With a deep yet subtle breath he squeezed her hand gently.

"I am here for you, if you need me," he said quietly.

Katherine had set her jaw, pressing her lips together firmly to stave off the threatening shaking of her body. Her hands trembled. Usually this type of thing would be caused by unnecessary pushing to spill her thoughts, but it was the fact that that wasn't what Eward was doing that made her slowly descend into a mess. The subtle squeeze on her hand felt magnified, almost as if Eward held it like a vice, even though it was far from that.

Trembling, her voice quivering and nearly choked, Katherine murmured, "I know." But that was all she could get out.

Eward was feeling emotional just seeing her react and he lifted his chin, taking a deep breath to steel himself. He watched the birds flying around outside and wished he were alone with her in the quiet calm of the gardens. Not for anything extra - just to stand. That thought alone made him nervous of what was happening to him.

With a brush of his thumb against her fingers he said "I will be close by," before letting her go and moving away.

Katherine shivered uncomfortably as she felt Eward let go of her and start to leave. The thought of anyone walking away, of leaving her, was more than she could bear, even though she knew it was not as serious as the death of her most beloved friend's father. But the thought alone was enough. Her chest hurt from holding back all of her sadnesses, her lip in pain from biting it.

"Wait," Katherine said, a bit louder than she had been speaking, but her voice was not clear. It was rather choked, even with teariness. "Wait," she repeated seriously, hoping Eward was still close enough to hear.

Eward stopped as soon as he heard her speak, not even realising it was wait until she repeated it. With a curious look he attempted a small smile to assure her he was willing to listen or be of service. His heart was beating loudly at the thought she wanted him to stay...

"Yes?" he said softly, stepping forwards.

Katherine's heart felt heavy, aching for Daphne and her family, and for herself, and with a strange need to have anyone, even Eward, with her. Her body felt terribly cold despite that the day was warm, and she shivered. Closing her eyes, still not turning to look at Eward, afraid that she'd fall apart in tears when finally with another person to console her, Katherine bowed her head solemnly.

"I don't...I don't want to be alone," Katherine whispered, sensing Eward near enough to hear her. "I'll end up lost if I am alone."

"You are not alone."

Just as Katherine had consoled him over the sudden return of his brother, Eward now consoled her in her grief over a lost father figure. His eyes were kind as he looked at her, never being anything but towards her nowadays. He longed for them to be somewhere more secluded and so he put an arm to hers, prepared to guide her out of the room.

"Why don't we walk for some air?" he suggested, hoping she'd take him up on it.

Katherine's heart felt like it would burst out of her chest from both pain and emotion as Eward said such a simple thing to her. Her breath caught, quivering in her throat as she held it in to keep herself from breaking down completely. She glanced around, not seeing her mother or Miles anywhere nearby or in plain sight; it could not be so dangerous to sneak away now, if only for a walk? Katherine was cold and shivering from everything but the temperature, and so, finally turning to face him, she carefully took Eward's arm, and even it felt warmer than her entire body was.

Nodding, Katherine took a step closer, the heat of his body near hers a comfort. "Please. I cannot stay in here."

Eward immediately obliged and began to lead Katherine as subtly as possible through double doors to a deserted corridor and towards some side doors leading to a patio. He made sure to do so slowly so as not to draw attention to their departure especially together. They were an unlikely couple considering their history together but he ignored it for the moment. Katherine was more important than gossip.

As soon as the light breeze hit his face, Eward took a breath and continued along the patio and along to the gardens. "I bought Eden Hall," he said conversationally, trying to take her mind off. "Lysander agreed to it on the condition I let an old friend of his move in with her husband. She is nice enough, and I got my house..."

Katherine chanced a glance over her shoulder as they walked off down the corridor but saw not a single eye in their direction. All the better. She held tightly to Eward's arm, not feeling as if her own feet could hold her, at least not yet. The cool breeze on the patio did nothing to comfort her, only making her colder and reminding her of the bleakness of the day, and she shifted just closer to Eward, needing the warmth of his body to keep her sanity.

"That...that's wonderful," Katherine stammered, her chest aching and throat seemingly closed up and choked. Her breath came in raspy, short, shuddering gasps, but quietly. "I...I am happy for you." And she truly was, but her voice would not make itself sound so.

Eward nodded, a small smile on his face before he hung his head with a sigh. He knew the day was hard for her. He could not even think of what Daphne was feeling if this was the effect on Katherine. Squeezing her arm he only spoke again once they were out of view completely from any guests, immersed in trees.

"If you need to cry, do so now," he said gently, glancing back towards the house to make sure they were not spotted. "It is not healthy to keep it inside..."

Katherine shivered in the shade of the trees; it seemed that warmth would not linger with her, as if her body rejected it. She looked away, almost ashamed that Eward had noticed the frailty in her voice and in her actions, but found a bit of comfort in their privacy. Her lip quivered as she breathed, trying to slow her racing heart and quick breaths. But he was right. She knew he was right.

Letting out a choked, short sob, Katherine wrapped her arms gently around Eward's body, burying her face against his chest, hot, stinging tears slipping down her cheeks as she wept silently. It was improper of her, and forward, but they were alone. Her sorrow froze her body, and she needed Eward, both the comfort and the warmth that he brought.

Eward wrapped his arms around Katherine's body, stroking her back and holding her to him. He did not care about tears on his suit, nor any creases. To have her close to him in her time of grief was all that mattered. Eward breathed her in, pressing his face on the top of her head and placing a kiss to her hair.

As she continued to cry, Eward found himself tearing up; sniffing harshly he tried to keep any strong emotion at bay. Katherine's intense grief was enough to affect him more than the actual death of the man they were supposed to be honouring.

Katherine gripped gently to Eward's back, holding herself close to him as she cried. Her chest was hot with intense emotion, heartbreak mostly, and loneliness, and she felt a stray tear wander down her neck to her collarbone, a hot salty lone trail. She savored the feeling of his arms around her, of the comfort in his touch. Though she was silent, her body shook with the quiet sobs, her throat closed.

Eward did not have to do this for her, least of all when, as Katherine knew, he had never felt quite close to Lord Wexley. And yet here he was. Katherine bit her lip, unable to stop the tears silently streaming down her cheeks. She felt him place a kiss to her hair, a tender gesture, and it made her both more at ease and more afraid, though she could not place why.

Eward was getting comfort from this even as Katherine was. It was nice just to hold her and have her holding him despite the dark situation they found themselves in. Obviously distraught, Katherine was gripping hold of him and Eward secretly enjoyed it; the whole occasion was not welcome, but her embrace certainly was. All the better if he was helping.

"I am sorry, Katherine," he said quietly, not sure what he was apologising for.

Katherine allowed herself to go a bit limp in Eward's arms, almost unable to hold herself upright any longer. She had been bearing the weight of Lord Wexley's passing without wavering at all for a few days now, and it had grown to be too much. Now, with a warm embrace offered to her, she took the invitation, and felt at ease enfolded in Eward's arms.

Pressing her cheek against Eward's chest, Katherine murmured, her voice still hoarse with tears, "You need not be sorry. You only need stay right as you are. Please, I...I cannot be alone," she reiterated, almost helplessly. She hated to sound so desperate, but she could not help it.

"I am not going anywhere," Eward said strongly, continuing to rub her back as if in assurance. "You will never be alone so long as I live - I will make sure of it. You will never be lost.... I will forever be here for you."

Without realising, Eward's eyes had begun spilling their own tears as he spoke, wetting the top of her hair. After he had stopped speaking he sniffed and tried to shake away the tears but they continued to fall. Oh God why had he got into this mess? Why was he in love with her?

Katherine was admittedly startled at the intensity in Eward's words, but refrained from reacting as such. It was neither necessary nor appropriate to behave childishly in the face of his conviction, and Katherine would not sink to that level. She drew back from his arms, regretting immediately the abandoned warmth he gave her, and looked up into his face. Her heart tightened, seeing him just as moved as she.

Reaching up, her hands shaking, Katherine brushed away the stray tears on Eward's cheeks with her thumbs, her hands lingering there, fingertips just barely pressing agaist his face. "I do hope that that's true," Katherine murmured softly, staring into his vibrant and sad blue eyes. She did not move, only stood touching him, their gazes locked. Words failed her, even though she tried to force them.

He hoped she could not feel his beating heart for it had increased tenfold since she had looked up at him. Becoming warmer with every second simply from those beats he allowed her to wipe away his tears, their gaze only breaking inbetween his fluttering blinks. He desperately wanted to kiss her but feared it inappropriate. With a sigh he did not smile as he replied in all seriousness.

"It is as true as the day I was born." And he meant every single word. His arms continued to hold her back and he quite forgot why he was there. "I would... die before anything hurt you..."

Katherine's chest was tight, her heart hammering against her breastbone. She could not have imagined the sincerity and seriousness in Eward's voice. As long as she had known him, he had been everything but genuine and dedicated to anything but himself, and it seemed that now he had undergone a dramatic change of heart. Perhaps it was Lysander's return humbling him, or his ways finally catching up with him, but Katherine could not contemplate the thought that it might have had something to do with her. That, in many ways, terrified her.

"Don't say that," Katherine murmured, lowering her hands to the base of his neck at his shoulders. "I hope it will never come to that." That was indeed true, but the thought that anyone, let alone her childhood enemy, would give his life for her was nearly too much to bear.

"As do I but if it came to it I would do anything to save you from pain. Katherine I - you mean so much to me, I do not like to see you upset." It may have sounded rich coming from him but he was hoping she would understand or at least believe the sentiment he was trying to get across. "I know all those years I revelled in making you feel miserable or angry but I regret it now. Lord Wexley was always telling me how horrid I was to you - I believe I owe it to him to apologise for my behaviour again."

How he wanted to kiss her...

Katherine's body was still horribly cold for the early summer, but her insides felt warm, her chest desperately hot. She took in every word of Eward's, absorbed them, tried to make sense of them. Considering their shock value, they were remarkably clear and easily understood, but coming from Eward they held a very different weight.

So many things ran through her mind. She wanted to apologize in return. She wanted to stop him from speaking of the past. She wanted to weep at mention of the deceased Lord Wexley. But most of all, she wanted to express that, despite evidence to the contrary, she felt very much the same. Her mouth was dry and words did not come easily, but, knowing their privacy had little chance of being compromised, Katherine ran one hand back up to Eward's face, cupping his cheek against her palm. "Eward," she murmured, only able to provide the one word before drawing his face to hers and kissing him gently on the lips.
