An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

Gabrielle needed to discuss some other subject. If she was voicing her worries, she was easy to see through, and in dangerous times such as this, then she had to be hard to understand. Not that she thought Adelaide would ever say anything about her, but who knew who was listening. She gave an involuntary shudder.

"That is going to be your last glass, so make it last."

Adelaide stopped mid-sip and lowered the glass of champagne away from her mouth. "Oh, Garbielle! Don't be a spoil, dear," she said innocently as she finally took a sip from the new glass. "After all, I know how to handle myself." Although that last bit was obviously far from the truth, as she needed three nurses to watch over her during the day. And the mix of alcohol and her troubled mind was hardly a pleasant experience for her once the drinks started to take full effect.

	Adelaide stubbornly crossed her arms across her chest. "Fine," she said, as if she was going to listen to Gabrielle. However she was silently working on a plan to separate herself from the younger girl, just like she had done with her nurse. Smiling as if she had won she took a sip of her champagne. Adelaide glanced down at her own glass, which was already half empty. "Perhaps we should trade?" she suggested thoughtfully. "That way you can get a fresh glass sooner?" She smiled a little, as if it was a marvelous plot she had thought up that would benefit both of them.

Sighing softly she looked around the room slowly. "Have you seen Francis?" she asked gently.

	Adelaide pouted as Gabrielle placed her drink onto the servant's tray. She was about to try to take it for herself, but the servant was gone before she could. Turning back to Gabrielle she sighed. Adelaide sipped at her champagne again in silence for a few moments before sighing. She looked around the room slowly, before turning back to Gabrielle. Whatever they had been talking about she had forgotten. "It is a shame that Francis is no longer with us, he enjoyed events such as this," she said gently before sighing. "I feel the crowds are not my taste, though."
