An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

"I have plenty." She held up the glass in her hand. It was nearly full.

Adelaide glanced down at her own glass, which was already half empty. "Perhaps we should trade?" she suggested thoughtfully. "That way you can get a fresh glass sooner?" She smiled a little, as if it was a marvelous plot she had thought up that would benefit both of them.

Sighing softly she looked around the room slowly. "Have you seen Francis?" she asked gently.

Gabrielle took both glasses in her small hands and handed her mistress the fuller one she had been sipping at.

OOC: Who is Francis?

Adelaide smiled and sipped at the fuller glass for a moment. She looked around the room curiously.

OOC: Francis Kinsley. Her last husband.

She shook her head no. "I have yet to find him."

OOC: Ohh, thanks! :) Can you get on AIM?

Adelaide sighed. "Late as usual, isn't he?" she asked, even though she knew the answer. Or rather, the answer to her question had Francis still been alive.

OOC: Sure. I'm on my phone, so IM me on tellyouastory.

"Well, did he have work?" Gabrielle asked quietly.

Adelaide nodded. "Yes, perhaps that is what's keeping him," she said softly before sipping her champagne.

"Hopefully he shall arrive soon." Gabrielle said.

Adelaide looked eagerly at the door to the ballroom, as if suddenly expecting him to appear. When he didn't she sighed and her lips formed into a frown. "Yes, hopefully," she said faintly.

"Adelaide, shall we go check in with the nurses?" Gabrielle suggested.

Adelaide stopped looking about the room for Francis and turned her attention back to Gabrielle. "Why?" she asked gently. "Do you not feel well, dear? Perhaps you have had to much champagne. I could finish that glass for you, if you'd like."

"Well, champagne isn't my drink. But I meant for you. Francis would not have insisted on them being here if he didn't think you might have need of them." She put the half-empty glass onto a tray of passing servant, and he went away.

Adelaide pouted as Gabrielle placed her drink onto the servant's tray. She was about to try to take it for herself, but the servant was gone before she could. Turning back to Gabrielle she sighed. "I suppose you are right," she said gently. "But I do not feel I need them now. I think they are a bit too overbearing for my taste."

Adelaide sipped at her champagne again in silence for a few moments before sighing. She looked around the room slowly, before turning back to Gabrielle. Whatever they had been talking about she had forgotten. "It is a shame that Francis is no longer with us, he enjoyed events such as this," she said gently before sighing. "I feel the crowds are not my taste, though."

"And are you enjoying it?" Adelaide asked before finishing her champagne. She looked around for a tray of full glasses, but seeing none nearby she settled her lifeless gaze back upon Gabrielle for the moment.

Adelaide gave a small shrug. "Perhaps," she said uncertainly. "It is strange to be out in such a large crowd," she admitted before casting a nervous glance around the room.

Adelaide nodded in agreement. "Yes, it is strange," she admitted softly. "And perhaps frightening," she added. For a moment she looked down in silence before adding in a soft voice, "I often forget how much the circumstances have changed since we have met."
