An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

Jamie looked at the French Embassy from the other side of the street, chewing his bottom lip and gathering his courage before he finally crossed the street and entered the building. This was definitely not his world and despite wearing his best clothes Jamie still felt out of place. Why had he decided to come here? Right, because he hoped that he could enjoy some free food, his rumbling stomach reminded him kindly that it had been some time sine he had enjoyed a decent meal, and because he hoped to get some useful contacts here. Maybe someone would be willing to at least have a look at his writing. Of course, that would be most delightful but it was also highly unlikely. The rational part of Jamie's mind told him that the rent was due in a few days and that a rich client would spare him the trouble of asking his landlady to grant him a few more days to get the money together.

Jamie grabbed a glass of champagne from the next best tray and took a sip, hoping that the alcohol would soothe his nerves a bit. His eyes roamed through the room and with an almost childlike curiosity he took in his surroundings.

Nell had, perhaps, had too many glasses of champagne already this evening and he regarded the other young man from across the room jealously. True, the young man had done nothing but look around but it did not stop Nell from feeling ill at ease.
After all, every new young man at social parties was a threat – not only to his livelihood, but, also, to his relationship with Léon. The ambassador could surely find a boy who’s feelings on subject of spying where not so ambivalent as Nell’s.

Jamie made his way to the crowd, a charming smile on his lips that didn't reach his eyes as he scanned the gentlemen for possible clients. He really didn't want to mess this up. At the other end of the room his eyes fell ont he boy Harry had pointed out to him earlier and Jamie approched him, his smile a little more honest this time.

"You're Nell, right?"

Nell crossed his arms across his chest, smiling back - although his was anything but honest.

"Yes, I am and if you've come here to try and charm your way into some Lords bed you've made a mistake." He sniffed. "Harry doesn't take kindly to new people on his patch."

Jamie raised an eyebrow before he started to laugh. This was certainly amusing.

"Now don't fret little one. Harry...knows about me and I guess we are work colleagues now. Or whatever you'd like to call it."

Nell's whole attitude changed instantly, now there was nothing to protect.

"You are? Harry has been busy tonight!" He chirped, grabbing two glasses of champagne from a passing tray and handing one to Jamie. "I'm Nell, but you already know that. Who are you?"

Jamie accepted the glass with a chuckle. Maybe all of this wasn't going to be that bad. So far he had lived alone and worked alone, having someone who was sharing it at least to a certain degree might be nice.

"I'm Jamie. It's nice to meet you."

Nell grins, sipping at his glass.
"I'm not really suppose to have anymore of these. Léon told me, but I did the job he asked me to so there really isn't any reason not to have one for celebration of a new colleague, is there?"

He looked around the ballroom and then back at Jamie.
"Do you have your eye on anyone?"

"Hm..." Jamie once again watched the crowd before he turned to Nell with a smile.

"Actually, no. At the moment they are all too busy with dancing. You?"

Nell looks from one end of the room to the other.

"No, I think I am the Ambassador's for the rest of the evening."

"Well, lucky you then. I have to wait until they are tired of dancing and ready for company," Jamie sipped his champagne and all of a sudden his face lit up.

"Although at least now I don't have to worry about the rent anymore, which takes away a lot of pressure."

"A few more glasses and a fast waltz and I'm sure you will find yourself fending them off with a stick." Nell laughed.

He glanced over at Harry, hesitating for a second before relying.
"Oh, yes. You'll never have to worry about the rent. The pressure of what?"

With Nell having snuck off with whatever Frenchie the ambassador had sent him after, Harry was finding himself rather bored. There were, of course, many interesting people, but now the dancing had begun he felt rather left out, and those who were not dancing seemed happily occupied talking amongst themselves.

There was one figure, however, who still lingered relatively close to the doors, glass in hand, but his outward appearance was shy, worried. But quiet comely nevertheless. And while Harry Fisher had nothing else to do, he had better introduce himself. After all, there was little else he could do tonight but chit-chat and make the best of the situation that he could. And as Harry had learnt, you could never be sure which of your associates would be the most useful.

"I would offer you a drink, but you seem to have already found them." Harry said as he approached the youth.

Jamie turned his head and studied the man who had approached him for a few seconds before he smiled softly and watched the crowd again.

"Aren't drinks the most important thing to find once you arrive at a ball?" Jamie asked with a smirk before he followed a sudden impulse and emptied his glass.

"Besides, now I don't have a drink anymore. Is that offer of yours still up?" Jamie smiled, resisting the urge to fidget a little nervously.

"That all depends on what you want out of attending a party. If you want to eat and drink as much as you can, then perhaps, if you come for something else, than perhaps they aren't as important. What are you here for?"

He raises an eyebrow as the other drains his glass, but mentally shrugs off his surprise. The youth was quite clearly nervous. "The offer is still open." He says, as he gestures over one of the Ambassador's staff, taking another two glasses from the tray and handing one over. "Harry Fisher. You are...?"

"Primarily I am here to eat and drink as much as I can. I don't really like dancing and I know no one here so far, so I guess eating and drinking is the best thing to do at the moment." Jamie took the glass, enjoying how cool the glass felt against his heated skin. he held out his other hand to Harry.

"I'm Jamie. Nice to meet you."

Harry didn't often bother with the formality of hand-shaking. It was only done, in his world, when you made a deal you had no intention of breaking. However, it seemed that in these strange circles, it was the done thing. He shrugged to himself and shook the youth's pro-offered hand.

"Eat and drink as much as you can?" Harry said, looking the young man over again. Fashionable clothes, even if worse for wear and age. "You aren't another one of the bankrupt nobles, are you?" He asked, almost certain this Jamie was certainly not. A noble would have been James Someone-or-other, not plain old Jamie from round the corner.

Jamie laughed although there was no real joy in it.

"No, definitely not one of those bankrupt nobles," He shook his head, taking another sip of champagne. Looking sideways at Harry he added "I don't think you are one of them either, or?"

"Never been a noble, and never been bankrupt. I don't have the intention of ever being either, Jamie." He smiles, and the expression is almost predatory. "This isn't the place for hard-working people like us. You and me would only fit in here if we jumped into someone's bed. Even then we'd not be the same as them. More welcome, but not the same. Nobs."

"Would we want to be the same as them?" Jamie asked as he watched the crowd. He honestly didn't know. If he were like them he would have money, he could publish his writings, but would he be truly happy?

"Their beds though are nice as long as the payment is good."

"Rich as them? Of course. Money gets you everything. But would I want to be them, no. They're all just parading peacocks, aren't they? All wigs and satin petticoats."

"That's right at least." Harry mutters, turning his attention back to the young man besides him, rather than looking out, over the crowd. "Do you? Warm beds?" He asks, taking the boy by the elbow and pulling him to the side of the room, away from anyone who might overhear. "If that's what you've come here to do, Jamie-boy, you're out of luck. My boys are looking after this little soiree." He says, pointedly.

"Now being rich would truly be wonderful," Jamie sighed. Only relucantly did he allow Harry to lead him away from the crowd, studying the man more closely now.

"I don't think what I do is any of your business," He replied, crossing his arms in front of his chest, trying to hide how much that comment affected him. He had set all his hopes into finding a client tonight.

"Even if, maybe your boys are not what every gentleman here is looking for."

Still reeling from the confrontation with her husband Amandine stomped around the ballroom hoping that her ladyship would soon be wanting to leave, as Amandine was desperate to escape. How dare he think he could talk to her like she was nothing? Though she should have been used to it: they had had many arguments during their past twelve months of marriage and it was a tumultuous relationship. Yes, she might not be as well behaved as the rich women who had been born and bred in wealth but that was not why he had married her!

In her temper she did not see the man infront take a champagne glass nor notice she was to bump into his side and almost send the drink all over him.

"Oh! I am so sorry, Monsieur, I do apologise..." she said quickly, trying her best at English just in case and hoping she did not have to mop anything up.

The young man looked rather out of place. It wasn't his clothes per se, although they did suggest he was more likely to be the manservant of one of the Lords here than anything higher, but perhaps his expression which was as if he'd never seen the like of such a place before. Either way it was an anomaly and he'd be remiss in his duties as a journalist if he didn't look into it.

On his way over he picked up a second glass of champagne, some of the finest the Ambassador had on offer this evening, to offer the young man when he reached him. "Rather a lot of frippery on show, don't you think, Monsieur? It's almost enough to make one's eyes ache if you star long enough." He held out the glass while keeping his own, half-full, to his chest. "Are you searching for anybody in particular?"
