An Invitation to the French Ambassador's Ball
Subject: The Ambassadors Ball
Where: The French Embassy
Who: Léon Belmont, the French Ambassador to the English court
Warnings: none as yet
Open to: All (all players may attend either as invited guests of the ambassador, as servants or guests of those invited, as staff, or as gate-crashers.)

The ballroom of the Embassy was already growing busy, and when Citizen Belmont paused for a moment besides one of the large windows, he could see yet more carriages pulling up outside, wreathed in the mist blowing in from the river.

The quartet had been playing now for a good half an hour, new French tunes as well as those the English favoured. His staff was busy handing out good French wine, and then refilling those glasses when they were drained.

It was going to be a good evening, and not only in the eyes of the party-goers. With some of England’s most prominent aristos on the guest list, and some than some newly arrived French nationals, tonight would be a night of information gathering, of sizing up the opposition, and perhaps even ensuring some of those French escapees were returned to face justice.

"No, you'll not have to worry about finding clients. Harry is very good at that, he has a little book of all the men and he's very good at finding more. He makes friends easily." Nell said with a wide smile, forgetting to mention how easily he made enemies too. There would be time for Jamie to discover that later. As long as he worked hard and didn't answer back Harry would deliver all he promised.

"Somehow all of this sounds too good to be true," Jamie chuckled, more to himself. "Then again, why shouldn't I be lucky for once," He shrugged, getting two full glasses of champagne and handing Nell one of them with a grin.

Nell accepted happily, after all, no-one could blame him for being friendly.
"It's not," He promised, glancing across at Harry. "He's...wonderful."

Jamie followed Nell's gaze, smirking lightly.

"Is there something going on between the two of you?"

Nell giggles, a blush rising in his cheeks.

"I...I'm special to him." He explains, rather a little worse for the champagne. He gestures with his glass, not noticing that he spills half of it on the floor. "I mean Harry isn't...he's looking for a wife and I understand that but he treats me differently. I've been to his townhouse. No-one else goes to his townhouse."

Jamie took the glass from Nell with an amused smile so that the boy couldn't spill all of it.

"It's nice when you are special to someone," He commented, trying to keep his own feelings at bay. Tonight was not a night for sadness.

Nell didn't even seem to notice the glass disappearing.
"We'll, in this line of work you end up special to lots of people." He laughed.

Jamie put the empty glasses down on the next best table, chuckling lightly.

"You think so? You have to be special so that people want you, but I don't know about actually being special to someone."

"But you could always be lucky. You could meet a nice rich man who'll set you up in an apartment with your own servants and an allowance to keep you well into your old age." He grins lopsidedly. "I mean, you hear about it happening all the time don't you. Happened to Nell Gwyn." He winks.
