"I was going to act like I didn't remember, if I ever did get back and did remember," Lucifer admitted. "But then I came back but it wasn't the Enterprise so I gave up on that plan."

He shrugged. "I'm here. I'm not dead. And you should stop being mad because I have news for you."

The look she gave in response to that was probably best described as incredulous, her eyebrows drawing together until there was a thin line in the space between them. "That's horrible," she told him, "And supernatural being or not, I'd have found a way to kick our ass when I found out you were lying."

"I know that, but it's not as easy as just shrugging my shoulders and getting over it. I mean, whose to say it's not going to happen again? Or, if it does, that you will come back a third time, or remember it if you do."

There was definitely a part of her that just wanted to avoid him to keep herself from going through it all again.

Sighing to herself, Kate reached up to tuck a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "Yeah, you mentioned that. And I stand by what I said: I'm not sure I want to know."

"That and I never lie," Lucifer pointed out. "Especially when you'd be that pissed off at me."

He didn't really have anything to say that would ease her mind about the possibility of his leaving again, nor did he want to point out that it could be her next time. So instead, he launched into what he did while he was away.

"I looked up Mary first, but she's pretty much an open book and incredibly easy to read even when she's trying to be secretive, so there wasn't much I didn't know, already. So then I looked up Peggy, but that just felt invasive which reminds me that I need to tell her that it's her fault I felt guilty. But you? I wanted to see you until I realized I couldn't just knock on your door. That would have been brilliant, though. Meeting you or Castle on earth."

Lucifer grinned, but then his expression softened. "I'm absolutely certain that you do want to know. Because there's only one question I had that I really wanted to get you an answer to. So why don't you trust me, Kate?"

She snorted at that, picking up one of the small bits of wood being used to feed the fire and carefully tossing it into the flames. "If you had shown up at the loft when I was home, I would have either arrested you or tried to shoot you."

But that was the end of her words, at least for a while, Kate's eyes focused on the flames of the fire while she tried to work out what to say. "It isn't you that I don't trust," she said, ignoring the prick of tears behind her eyes and the waiver in her voice. "It's whatever happened next."

"Well I'm your friend so I'm going to tell you," Lucifer said, not leaving room for argument. "Because you deserve an answer to the question that's haunted you since you woke up with new memories. And I wouldn't have mentioned it if the outcome wasn't something you would want to hear. You could have had me arrested or shot me because you're alive to have done so."

He glanced over at her, and then put a hand on her shoulder. He really had missed her, but it was almost worth the trip home and back to know that particular outcome.

The smile she gave - because, really, it was touching that Lucifer had gone to such effort to give her answers - was genuine, but there was a very real sadness lurking in it which was only more pronounced by the reflection of tears as she glanced at the fire again. "But that's the thing," she replied, reaching up to gently squeeze his hand, "I didn't tell you everything when I told you Castle and I were shot."

Shrugging her shoulders, Kate dropped her hands back into her lap. "I think at the time I just couldn't say it out loud. It took me nearly a week to even tell Rick and, after that, I just couldn't do it again. But it's....." she sighed, discreetly brushing at a couple of tears that had managed to slip down her cheeks. "It's the thing that's always scared me the most."

Even now, when she really should just plow through and lay it all out there, Kate had to take a moment to get her bearings. She'd come to terms with it all as much as she ever thought she could, and she had reconciled that in deciding to have a child here that she was opening herself up to an altogether different set of possibilities, but none of that made telling Lucifer any easier.

"When I was shot, I was hit here," she explained, reaching up to brush her fingers across a spot on her shoulder, just a couple of inches below her collarbone. "Not fatal, though an awful injury to recover from," she explained, even as her hand drifted lower. Ultimately, it stopped on her left side, her fingers pressing low against her abdomen, both where several internal organs resided and, should she have been pregnant, close enough to her womb to be fatal to a baby, if not to the both of them. "The other bullet hit me here, which....." she paused once more, gathering up her nerves before she put it out there into the universe. "If you were pregnant when you were shot, is a pretty terrible place to take a bullet."

Several times as Kate worked up the nerve to tell him what he already knew, Lucifer opened his mouth to speak, unsure if he should interrupt her. He'd promised himself he wasn't going to tell her more than she needed to know. But this? There was no doubt in his mind that this wasn't breaking his own self-imposed rule.

"I've no doubt the experience was harrowing, or that it's been a long few months wondering," Lucifer said, genuine concern in his voice. "But the baby was... is fine, Kate." He had no desire to torture her with the unknown, which is why he had decided for her that she was ready to hear this, she'd had those questions long enough.

And he hadn't known if she'd had any idea if she was pregnant until just now, but he had no desire to leave her in suspense.

For a moment, she didn't do anything, just sat frozen on a log. It seemed too much, too good to be true that the worst thing in her world hadn't happened that somehow, someway, she and her firstborn had survived a gunshot.

But Kate knew Lucifer and, regardless of his reputation for not lying to anyone, she knew that he would never lie to her, especially about something as important to her as this. "Oh my God," she whispered, one shaking hand rising to cover her mouth as the tears spilled over and slipped freely down her cheeks. "You....really?" she asked, her face scrunching up as she cried. "The baby lived? I lived?"

It was a testament to how much Lucifer cared about Kate that he let that comment slide even though his father had nothing to do with him investigating Kate’s life back on earth. He was also willing to bet that doctors had more to do with saving their lives than his dad. But instead he remained silent and reached for Kate, even somewhat awkwardly but it was the intent that had to count.

“Right,” he said after a long moment, his voice hushed. “You’re going to have to stop being mad at me soon because I didn’t have a choice, Kate but I did my best to make it up to you.”

"And Castle's okay, too?" she asked after a moment, deciding that she needed that one last piece of information to really be settled. "We're all fine and we're all happy?" There were at least a dozen other questions she could ask - was it a boy or a girl, what was the name, did they still live in the loft, but none of that really mattered. If they were together and happy, that was enough.

If she had known his train of thought, Kate probably would have agreed with him. She wasn't particularly religious, she was a person that put her faith in logic, evidence and the power of the justice system rather than supernatural rulers of the universe. But none of that really mattered and, religious or not, if she needed to thank God for what Lucifer was telling her, then she would happily do it.

"You didn't know you were coming back," she told him, trying to blink through her tears as she leaned over and gave him a tight hug. "You did it for you as much as for me." Which was fine. If she left and remembered her time on the Enterprise, Kate would have done the same thing, though she felt the likelihood of finding Lucifer in her world was likely slim to none. "But thank you, nonetheless."

"Yes, Castle's okay too and you're all ridiculously happy," Lucifer confirmed. "And no, I didn't know I was coming back, but I knew I still had my memories intact so I took that as a sign that I might. And yes," he added, sounding slightly exasperated. "I did find that out for myself. Because you're my best friend and I had to know you were okay. But I also knew that if I did make it back I would want to be able to tell you. So just give me some credit here, would you?"

Even as he said that last sentence though, he was smiling. She really couldn't stay mad at him, even if he had left. She might actually start to believe it wasn't his choice.

"Now that that's out of the way, what have I missed?"

"And let you gloat about it? Never." Kate replied, giving him a smile that was genuine as she let go of him. But even though she wasn't touching him anymore, she made sure to meet his eyes. "But all joking aside.....you have no idea what this means to me, Lucifer. Thank you, really."

Somehow, someway she'd repay him for what he had done. Telling him thank you was so far from adequate repayment.

Wiping at her cheeks again, she tried to think about what had happened on the ship that Lucifer might need to know. Really, not that much had happened, Halloween had come and gone, Thanksgiving had come and gone, and now they were all thankfully off the ship and enjoying some real sunshine and all the amenities that Risa could provide them. "Well, the rest of the ship kept saying that the Lounge was very quiet and maybe a little dull without you," she said, not that Kate could comment for herself. Since she wasn't drinking anymore, and without Lucifer there to talk to, she had avoided the Lounge altogether since he had left. "Castle threw a murder mystery party that went over pretty well, some other people threw a rager on the holodeck with costumes and everything for Halloween, I had a birthday, Castle and I celebrated a wedding anniversary, and the entire ship just floated through space to end up here on Risa, en route to whatever mission Starfleet sends us on next."

A dozen responses danced around the tip of his tongue, all proving her right, that he'd gloat. But in the end, he just nodded.

"You're welcome," he decided on simply before shifting back to the less emotional topic.

"And they'd be right. Of course the lounge was dull after I left." He flashed her a smile and then asked, "I missed your birthday?"

"I wouldn't know," she told him with a shrug, "I'm not drinking and if you weren't there, I didn't see the point of going inside if I wasn't drinking."

The answer to his question was just a nod of her head. "You did, it's the week before Thanksgiving, but we'll just consider the guitar my gift." She wasn't that concerned about it, no one else on the ship had even known beside Castle and possibly Peggy and that had been fine with her.

"Well, you'll have to return once we're force back onto the ship," Lucifer mentioned. "Even if you're not drinking." He didn't question her on that, assuming that she was going on with her ridiculous plan of babies in space.

"Happy belated birthday then," he added cheerfully. "You kept the guitar? Didn't bash it while you were angry with me?"

She had thought about smashing it, but that was too childish and petty for her to actually go through with. It was bad enough that she'd had this irrational anger for so long, destroying something she loved and had gotten a good bit of enjoyment from was a step too far.

"Thanks," Kate replied, bobbing her head to indicate that she had kept the guitar. "I did. Thought about throwing it against the wall, or maybe lighting it on fire to make myself feel better. Instead, I shoved it in the closet and went for a run." The run had helped somewhat.

"Remember when I broke the first punching bag?" Lucifer asked, the memory jarred by Kate saying she'd gone for a run. He shook his head. "Or when I spent that night in the brig?"

"Well there was two. But the second time I hardly earned the trip after that bloke kept playing that same damn song over and over and over and over and... you get the point."

He shrugged and looked at Kate. "The point is, I'm glad you're still here. If I had come back and you weren't, I'd have been upset that I was back at all."
