He felt apart from the town and its people, separate from those he knew and those he didn’t alike—where he had once been an empathetic boy, the kind to sympathise even with those in situations he didn’t technically understand (he was, after all, a completely different kind of man), now he couldn’t connect. He didn’t really connect, even with those to whom he had spoken before, even with his family. He could see the change in his mother’s eyes, the way she looked at him as if she no longer knew who lived in her house. )
