To be clear: This was not an apology cake. In order for it to be an apology, Ginny would have to believe that she had done something wrong. Which she hadn't. Neither had Harry. How they lived their own lives was their business and if they wanted to get married, that was their business too. And how they got engaged might not have been the wisest decision they'd made, but Ginny didn't see why she had to apologize to anyone (except her own mother) about it. So. There.
Except...She couldn't shake the feeling that Maria was upset with her? Or with both of them? But Ginny didn't see Harry catching any of the attitude that she was, so maybe it was just at Ginny? And no, Maria hadn't actually said she was upset. In fact, she had offered her very cordial congratulations. But that was just it. It was cordial. Polite. But not warm.
She'd left Harry out of it because he wouldn't understand. And he'd insist that everything was fine, but Ginny knew it wasn't. The pair did not always see eye to eye. And there was plenty that the two of them disagreed on. It seemed like even moreso since Ron had involved himself, but Ginny had to let that go. It hadn't been easy, and it still weirded her out quite a bit. But they were going to be family. And Ginny, stubborn as she might be, couldn't stomach the idea of Maria not being on board with that. So it was time to clear the air. Get things back on track. And so she'd made a peace offering. But not an apology.
It was late afternoon when she showed up at Maria's, cake in hand. She should have owled to make sure she was home. Or that Ron wasn't there. Ugh. But she was afraid if she'd owled, Maria would make up some excuse not to see her, or pretend like they didn't need to have this conversation. So she had just gone over, hoping for a miracle. She knocked rather aggressively on the door, partly because she wanted to get this over with, and partly because she was afraid of losing her nerve, and knocking a little extra hard ensured that if Maria was here, she definitely heard it so Ginny couldn't just drop the cake and run.
