Everil sighed as she adjusted the light cloak on her shoulders. She’d chosen her serviceable green homespun dress for today, a brown leather bracer around her waist where her purse was carefully secured. Her soft boots helped to make her steps noiseless, though not to help conceal her presence wherever she went. Their comfort for her was almost entirely because of the sheathes that they could conceal. Even if she didn’t like to turn heads, she would have. The night before she had fallen asleep with her stores blissfully low. This morning though, she couldn’t afford the luxury. She never knew when she would need extra power in a new city with new faces. If necessary, she would find someone to practice on before she slept, to help stave off any surprises from her so called talent for seeing.
The sun was beginning to warm the city around as she walked and the bustle of people that hadn’t been around before now had shown themselves with a vengeance. Since her initial scare at the chandlery, she hadn’t seen a hint of her. What? Couldn’t she even think her name now? Everil shook herself. The chances of running into anyone she knew was most likely slim, which was both a blessing and a curse.
Since she’d been here, she had been almost completely unproductive, flitchhawk posts aside. Besides, though she had some gold saved, it would inevitably run out if she didn’t find a way to make more. And if this could be somewhere that she could stay, to feel safe, then she should try out a new life here. And a new life meant a way to make money. The stableboy at the inn had told her that one of the local horse merchants had a talented breeder located somewhere along the outskirts of the city, one whose line graced the palace itself. Frowning, she scanned the crowd. It was possible he had misled her, though she was almost certain that this was the direction she had been told to find him. Apparently, by lunch he would be at the White Horse Tavern. Her problem was finding it.
