[backdated to Saturday]
Who: Hiram and Portia (and possibly his friends?)
Where: the Hogwarts Express
When: backdated to Hiram's birthday
What: Portia finds Hiram to give him a birthday gift and probably embarrasses him a lot
Portia wasn't exactly very good at choosing gifts for people. In her own life, she had never really received anything very interesting at all, except from Melody, who was the exception to every rule. At home, it was quite normal for her to receive new robes, some books, quills, parchments, and the like, sometimes new music, if she was lucky. It wasn't that she didn't appreciate the gifts that she was given, it was just that she was beginning to realize just how unexciting her life had truly been. It hadn't really helped that her own birthday had slipped by almost entirely unnoticed, not just by her friends, but also by her family. Her parents had sent a note and a parcel of very practical (and very boring) things, but there wasn't much else.
She had tried not to be disappointed, truly she had, but it really hit home how lonely things could be when she faded into the background and allowed herself to disappear. At least when Prentiss had been at school, his constant minding had prevented it from happening entirely. Portia was determined to not fade away any longer.
So Portia had decided to get a gift for Hiram for his birthday. She had gotten a gift for Shaundra for her birthday and since Hiram was the other officer for the Honour Society, it would be only fair to purchase one for him as well. She imagined that Hiram wouldn't selfishly hate being forgotten as she had but he, too, was quiet and it was difficult to tell what he would feel. So she had gone out of her way on the last Hogsmeade visit to pick out a few things she thought he might like and wrapped them neatly to give him on his birthday.
Unfortunately, Hiram's birthday was on the day they took the Hogwarts Express back to London and being that they were in different houses, it made it difficult for Portia to locate Hiram before they got on the train. She didn't see him at all before boarding the train so once she had put her possessions down, she decided to walk through the cars, looking for the compartment Hiram had chosen to sit in. She peered into one after another before finally spotting him.
"Excuse me," she said politely, moving partway into the compartment. "May I just have a moment of your time?" She hoped she wasn't interrupting anything and that no one would mind her intrusion.
