Er, not a lot. What I know, that is. We don't really do that much here in Britain, which you'd think we would given what we know about the war. I'd look for Muggle resources first. Anyone who does it here is going to be Muggle-friendly. Mungo's can be really backwards about certain things.

I can look into some options. Talk to people outside Mungo's. One of the things I want to do when I get further along in my career is open up to more Muggle options and bring those practices in.

We're talking here about Death Eaters, I presume. Seeing something they did or actually being tortured? I mean honestly a lot of us have some trauma to work out from coming on the scene and seeing what was done. Finding bodies. That sort of thing. I can talk about personal experience from that, and some of the informal advice I've had.

It's more tricky if the person has been a direct victim.

Let's move passed hypotheticals because if I give you context you're smart enough to figure out I am talking about Peter.

Without saying everything, Peter was a direct victim and has been suffering since. I don't think I realized how bad it was until recently. To make matters worse he acted in a way that hurt me deeply which came to light a few days ago.

On some level, I assume his actions were a response to his trauma and lack of support, but...

I feel like he has betrayed me on some level. So part of my is angry at him, but also guilty and wanting to help.

No, I didn't think so. Of your lot you're the only one with half a lick of sense. Not counting Lily.
The answer to that question is unclear. Depends on how the Dark Mark works. And/or if another Death Eater knew enough to make their own using some artefact, or any number of other things.
It's complicated. Still, if the oaths come into conflict and they're strong enough, it would be very bad.

I can tell you what I found in the archives, which is basic stuff and also says that each Dark Wizard who binds their followers creates their own Dark Path and they will be unique. It's all specific about how to break it, and it's not very optimistic, but it has lots of detail on things not to do. Quite graphic

So you know, none of this may apply in this particular case.

There are two general classes, once is a living spell, which is an evocative name for a spell that has been programmed to evade detection and to respond to its master. The other is a type of feudal binding. Basic contract is promise of protection for promise of service. In general magical bindings, neither of those is common any more, outside of dark wizardry, and that's not that common.

Both types are effectively a mark of ownership by or allegiance to a Dark Wizard. They can't be seen by others unless the Wizard or the Marked wants them to be seen. They're very difficult to detect, especially if the Marked isn't cooperating. This makes them difficult to use in prosecutions, because they're hard to prove or disprove.

They're often tied to a power to compel someone, either to attend the Dark Wizard or otherwise to do something. They have been known to denote status amongst the followers, and allow one minion to give orders to the unmarked, or two marked minions to recognize each other. That's pretty suspect, though. You'd have to risk exposure to do that.

They're said to be difficult to remove, but they will fade if the tie is broken. Historically, it doesn't seem to prevent murdering your master and taking his place, but it requires something like that to break it. There's an account of a witch with a mark on her hand. She cut off her hand and re-grew it, and it was still marked.

Have you seen one? I don't know of any proof that He Who Shall Not used them, but it's quite likely, and rumors abound.

Well, you've already proven more than anyone else has on the subject if you've seen one.

We could almost certainly tell if it was the "living spell" or the "bond of vassalage" type.

It would also help quite a bit if your willing subject were willing to describe the bonding and the effects. If we could get it written up, it would advance knowledge of the field immensely. Most of the records are from the dark ages.

But yes, that's exactly what we've each trained for, in slightly different and complementary ways.

	That's the part I'm struggling most with -- why didn't he say something sooner? It's incredibly awkward over here. We might need to consider shifts. Perhaps he felt like he was letting us down? Or perhaps he thought we had other problems to deal with. All we can do is make sure he knows we're here for him now.

Which we are. We're happy to have him (or all of you) over here with us for a bit, or give us half an hour to pack a bag for the sprog and we can come over there to give you a spell.

We're going to have to tell Minerva, at the very least. But I'd like to have a firm grasp on exactly what we're telling her, and maybe some strategies for damage mitigation, before we do.

I have been talking to the Prewetts and they might be able to get us more solid answers, but this also means I am going to actually have to talk to Peter.
