The Hedge Witches' Society Spring Fete

The Fete

The Hedge Witches' Society is an ancient (pre-Statute) association of rural witches and the occasional wizard dedicated to the best of British hedge wizardry: creature and animal breeding, herbology and other plants, and home and craft magic such as practical potioneering, cookery, and similar homely witchery. They hold two festivals, in the Spring at Beltane (1 May) and in the Fall at Mabon (21 September).

The Spring Fete is to show off the spring-born creatures and animals as well as the work done over the winter and in the spring with flowers, herbs, potions, and cookery. Contests are held in all these areas. Mostly, however, it is a time to mingle and enjoy the excellent weather.

This year the Fete includes a contest in homely potions that will be judged by the famous Damocles Belby, a brilliant and eccentric creator who is rumoured to be working on a potion that will change the face of the wizarding world if he succeeds in his work.

VISUALS!

Volunteers! MG MCGONAGALL is bitten by a crup puppy and has to seek medical treatment.
LILY POTTER and VOLUNTEER 3 (DE) get into an argument about politics and ALICE TRAVERS has to separate them.
REMUS LUPIN and VOLUNTEER 6 are competing in one of the contests. Hard feelings ensue when one or the other wins. (Die roll, will be determined after volunteers selecte their contest.)
CLARISSA GAMP encounters a hedge witch granny who is convinced she saw a Death Eater.
VOLUNTEER 8 is a Belby fan and spends a lot of time following Belby around while he inspects the potions, exciting a lot of comment.

OOC NOTES

This event will take place in a wizarding area in Hampshire.
While the Potions contest is the big draw, and will bring all sorts of people to the event, there will be a lot of other things to do.
The event is kid-friendly, so bring the wee ones.

locations! ⬦ Booths: Goods for sale like plants, crup puppies, food, craft work, potions, etc.

⬦ The Hedge Maze: At one end of the fete is the Hedge Maze, which takes up about an acre. Tall enough for visual privacy, but you might still be overheard.

⬦ Animal Pens: On the far end from the Hedge Maze are the pens of animals, including lots of baby creatures. Bring the kids because there's a petting zoo!

Lily's pretty sure she missed some paint in her hurried cleaning of her face, and she only got about five hours sleep last night, so she's pretty sure she actually looks... well, like she's a young mum. But she just smiles and says, "Thank you. It's a nice surprise to see you. I wasn't sure if you'd be interested in this sort of thing." And she's not at all sneaking looks at his potion or work areas. Yes, she is interested in what he's brewed, but she's also, obviously, genuinely interested in talking to him.

Lily is beautiful and has always been beautiful and is currently close to radiant... not that Severus would say any of that, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which involves his continued desire to live and Black is looming somewhere nearby, ready to defend someone's honour like he's a knight and not a Neanderthal.

No matter.

He shrugs, fingers ticking nervously over a porcelain stirring rod. Better for avoiding unintentional reactions, obviously, and not just meant for fidgeting. "I... this, yes. The rest... not as much," he admits. Fetes are not his scene. "I didn't know you'd be here."

"We very nearly weren't here," Lily admitted with a laugh. "Harry was up half the night crying, no idea why, as you can see it's really bothering him today." She waved a hand back towards where Harry was splashing happily in a shallow dish of her fingerpaint potion, gurgling laughter with every stray drop. "Too nice a day not to seize the opportunity. Speaking of, you should have a look at the herbology showings, if you haven't already. There are some fascinating varietals being cultivated, I wish I had the time to experiment with their potential uses."

His gaze tracks to the baby, snags there, unreadable. It's not that he's angry with the infant. It's a lot of confusing emotions, and anger is sort of the easiest, but even Severus can suss out that glowering at Lily's baby is not going to win him points.

Though he's not sure he's trying to win points, either. Is he?

This is why he doesn't talk to anyone from school. It's all very confusing and he hates feeling wrong-footed by inconvenient things like emotions.

"I saw someone bringing in something that looked like eyebright crossed with citronella," he offers, after a pause. "I'd meant to go see where that went. Did you... see anything that you'd recommend finding?"

"Eyebright and citronella?" Lily repeated, perking up. "I didn't see that one, but I only made it through half the greenhouses before I had to come to this. I'll have to go back and look at the rest. There is a fascinating blue rose in one greenhouse. The grower claims if it's pollinated by pixies the hips brew a tea that lets the drinker fly. Or sort of float, at least. Seems convoluted, but potentially interesting." Lily was, as always, enthusiastic about potions and plants and the possibilities of magic. She'd come a long way from the girl who'd sat with Severus and avidly taken in his stories of the magical world, but some days she could still scarcely believe this was really her life now.

There's just something about Lily when she's engaged in a subject. Severus can't explain it.

Not that he thinks about it. Much. But looking at it now, he softens up a little and chuckles, low and behind his fingers like he's trying to keep the sound from being too obvious. "I'll have to inquire," he allows, the curve of his mouth ticking up just at one corner. "It sounds like it might be useful."

He glances aside, then back. "Do you remember where you saw it?"

"It was--" Lily started to answer readily enough, but then her hands came up in a sort of wait-for-it brace and she squinted up and actually turned her body a little, clearly--to someone who'd known her as long as Severus--stepping back through her memory. "If you come in the main entrance on greenhouse two, it was on the left hand side, toward the back. The grower's name was Pepper, anyway." She smiled easily. "And I should probably keep moving, or I won't get around everyone. But I'm looking forward to seeing your work in action."

That is such a familiar gesture that it makes Severus smile, if only a little. He can't help it. Lily is very... demonstrative. Always has been. Like she can't think properly if she's not moving somehow. "Right," he allows, soft and almost sheepish. "Pepper, greenhouse two. I'll keep it in mind for later, when we've finished."

If he's disappointed that she's going to keep moving, he doesn't show it. He just dips his head, bringing his height down a fraction in an awkward nod that sort of hunches up and freezes there. "It was... nice to talk to you. Good luck." With the rest, with the contest. In general. It all applies.
