The Hedge Witches' Society Spring Fete
The Fete

The Hedge Witches' Society is an ancient (pre-Statute) association of rural witches and the occasional wizard dedicated to the best of British hedge wizardry: creature and animal breeding, herbology and other plants, and home and craft magic such as practical potioneering, cookery, and similar homely witchery. They hold two festivals, in the Spring at Beltane (1 May) and in the Fall at Mabon (21 September).

The Spring Fete is to show off the spring-born creatures and animals as well as the work done over the winter and in the spring with flowers, herbs, potions, and cookery. Contests are held in all these areas. Mostly, however, it is a time to mingle and enjoy the excellent weather.

This year the Fete includes a contest in homely potions that will be judged by the famous Damocles Belby, a brilliant and eccentric creator who is rumoured to be working on a potion that will change the face of the wizarding world if he succeeds in his work.

VISUALS!
Volunteers! MG MCGONAGALL is bitten by a crup puppy and has to seek medical treatment.
LILY POTTER and VOLUNTEER 3 (DE) get into an argument about politics and ALICE TRAVERS has to separate them.
REMUS LUPIN and VOLUNTEER 6 are competing in one of the contests. Hard feelings ensue when one or the other wins. (Die roll, will be determined after volunteers selecte their contest.)
CLARISSA GAMP encounters a hedge witch granny who is convinced she saw a Death Eater.
VOLUNTEER 8 is a Belby fan and spends a lot of time following Belby around while he inspects the potions, exciting a lot of comment.
OOC NOTES
  • This event will take place in a wizarding area in Hampshire.
  • While the Potions contest is the big draw, and will bring all sorts of people to the event, there will be a lot of other things to do.
  • The event is kid-friendly, so bring the wee ones.
  • Thanks to Dee for helping me work this out!

locations! ⬦ Booths: Goods for sale like plants, crup puppies, food, craft work, potions, etc.

⬦ The Hedge Maze: At one end of the fete is the Hedge Maze, which takes up about an acre. Tall enough for visual privacy, but you might still be overheard.

⬦ Animal Pens: On the far end from the Hedge Maze are the pens of animals, including lots of baby creatures. Bring the kids because there's a petting zoo!

Herbology contests

This year Priscilla Lestrange is the presiding judge over the various herbology contests, casting her practiced and highly critical eye over foliage, flowers, fruits, growth patterns, and performative bonsai, and even occasionally offering a crisp and precise piece of advice.

(If Rabbit gets within five feet of any of the herbology pavilions, the grass attacks him.)

Andromeda, herbology contest

Dromeda has entered a new variant on a night-blooming primrose that appears white until exposed to moonlight, at which time it glows in increasingly vivid shades of blue as the moon waxes.

Fabian came to take a look at Andromeda's work and hoped that he, unlike Rabbit, was not so far in disfavour with Madam Lestrange that the grass was going to attack him.

Delighted to see a friend willing to risk life, limb, and grass stains to see her work, Dromeda promptly invited Fabian to her garden. Where he can more safely admire any flower he likes.

Dora offered him a worm. She had a pocketful that had somehow escaped her mother's notice.

Despite the failed engagement between Andromeda and Alice's brother, she had always rather liked the woman. She stopped by the contest to provide her support.

Dromeda might've noticed that shiny new jewelry and offered congratulations, and of course tea when Alice has the time to spare for a visit.

Lily is interested in and competent at herbology for potions-reasons, so she swings by to look through the greenhouses at all the entries, and will certainly pause for a friendly chat (and cuddle of baby Harry? :D) with Andromeda.

No one can resist baby cuddles, can they? Dromeda indulges a chat and a cuddle, and Dora is still handing out worms.

Andromeda, herbology contest

Sirius has...less than no interest in plants, but he turns up to give Andromeda a hug and applaud her kinda-neat flowers anyway. "They're aces, love, very...pretty and glowy, what are they, uh, violets?"

"Primroses, you heathen." Said with much love, of course, and accompanied by a hug. Dora is out of worms by now, but offers to dig in the dirt to find more during Sirius' next visit. They're better fresh, anyway.

"Primroses! I knew that, I was seeing if you did," Sirius says, beaming like the outrageous and obvious lie is perfectly believable. "They're nice, anyway."

He is enthusiastic about the prospect of future worm-digging, as one would expect.

Claire keeps a garden and thus has some personal interest in the contest. She especially likes Andromeda's entry and finds a moment to ask her about them. Her garden is getting a new addition next year.

Of course Dromeda is happy to explain her work and offer a tiny packet of seeds along with instructions for care and cultivation. The world needs more flowers, anyway.

Narcissa and Lucius have come to show their support for their friend Madam Lestrange and are reviewing the herbology entries when they wander by Andromeda's entry. Narcissa has actually stopped to admire the primroses when she realises whose they are and starts to move away.

Andromeda & Narcissa

It's not often Andromeda sees any of her family, given that they occupy very different social spheres now. She's caught off guard enough that Narcissa starts moving away before she manages to blurt out a quick, "Cissa, wait."

Lucius felt his wife's back tense under his hand. He made sure she feels his presence and support. He was ready to back her play, whatever she chose. It would up to her to decide if her sister would be spoken to or given the cut direct.

Lucius glanced around, seeing who was attempting to be casual about watching the encounter. They were being observed, of course. It was a consequence of being important. Whatever happened next, Narcissa would have to deal with Druella's reaction to it tomorrow.

It took Narcissa a moment to react, but Lucius' hand was her support, always, and she knew that he would back her against her sister--former or present--or her mother. She glanced back up at Andromeda, and let herself hesitate for just a moment. To let Andromeda say whatever she would, even if Narcissa did not respond here.

To her immense surprise- good surprise, of course, the best sort, and Andromeda felt something a little like hope kindling- Narcissa paused. It was more than she expected, really.

Which was why she had no idea what to actually say or do with the opportunity.

"I miss you." There. Direct and true, and something she'd tried saying for years without being heard directly. "And," she rushed on, "I'm glad to see you're well." She was, of course. She wanted to ask if Narcissa was happy, but. Too much. She'd settle for her two truths, if that was all she got.

Clarissa is not a horticulturist herself, but she does love the flowers &c, so she will spend time wandering around enjoying the sights.

(If she happens to see Rabbit being chased away by grass, she will grin and wave as she walks right past him into the pavilions and laugh for literal days afterward about it. Mama Lestrange has style.)
