The Hedge Witches' Society Spring Fete
The Fete

The Hedge Witches' Society is an ancient (pre-Statute) association of rural witches and the occasional wizard dedicated to the best of British hedge wizardry: creature and animal breeding, herbology and other plants, and home and craft magic such as practical potioneering, cookery, and similar homely witchery. They hold two festivals, in the Spring at Beltane (1 May) and in the Fall at Mabon (21 September).

The Spring Fete is to show off the spring-born creatures and animals as well as the work done over the winter and in the spring with flowers, herbs, potions, and cookery. Contests are held in all these areas. Mostly, however, it is a time to mingle and enjoy the excellent weather.

This year the Fete includes a contest in homely potions that will be judged by the famous Damocles Belby, a brilliant and eccentric creator who is rumoured to be working on a potion that will change the face of the wizarding world if he succeeds in his work.

VISUALS!
Volunteers! MG MCGONAGALL is bitten by a crup puppy and has to seek medical treatment.
LILY POTTER and VOLUNTEER 3 (DE) get into an argument about politics and ALICE TRAVERS has to separate them.
REMUS LUPIN and VOLUNTEER 6 are competing in one of the contests. Hard feelings ensue when one or the other wins. (Die roll, will be determined after volunteers selecte their contest.)
CLARISSA GAMP encounters a hedge witch granny who is convinced she saw a Death Eater.
VOLUNTEER 8 is a Belby fan and spends a lot of time following Belby around while he inspects the potions, exciting a lot of comment.
OOC NOTES
  • This event will take place in a wizarding area in Hampshire.
  • While the Potions contest is the big draw, and will bring all sorts of people to the event, there will be a lot of other things to do.
  • The event is kid-friendly, so bring the wee ones.
  • Thanks to Dee for helping me work this out!

locations! ⬦ Booths: Goods for sale like plants, crup puppies, food, craft work, potions, etc.

⬦ The Hedge Maze: At one end of the fete is the Hedge Maze, which takes up about an acre. Tall enough for visual privacy, but you might still be overheard.

⬦ Animal Pens: On the far end from the Hedge Maze are the pens of animals, including lots of baby creatures. Bring the kids because there's a petting zoo!

⬦ OOC - QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS!

Alice will be perusing through booths, pretending to be looking at the wares while she watches the people mingle around her.

She will stop more frequently than normal due to a pounding headache and a nauseous feeling in her stomach. She has some seltzer water on more than one occasion.

Remus keeps a measured difference from Belby and the potions competition. Yes, he'll happily support Lily, but he has all sorts of mixed feeling about the work that Belby is doing. As much as he might want to learn more, he is so very over the false hope and quest for the cure.

He does, however, wander off from his friends and spend a good amount of time talking with a few of the artists displaying their works.

Lily @ Potions contest
[info]lilliputian
2019-05-02 12:36 am UTC (link)
Heck yes Lily went in for the Potions contest. It's right up her alley AND she'd love a chance to ask Belby some questions about what he's working on.

Lily brewed up fingerpaint for little ones that changes colour, is safe to eat, AND quick and easy to clean up (even off clothes or walls). For bonus cute points, she enlisted Harry to help demonstrate and he left colourful tiny handprints on her face and on Belby's robes.

Severus, potions contest
[info]gutter_bones
2019-05-02 02:56 am UTC (link)
Having a vested, personal interest in Belby's work, Severus is keen to ask questions if possible. His entry to the contest is a potion that allows limited foresight- maybe a 5-10 minute glimpse into the immediate future. He demonstrates by asking for a volunteer, who is able to accurately describe the next several arrivals to this little corner of the fete, and handily anticipates a spill from a nearby table that might've otherwise caused a minor explosion.

He does not... at any point... stare awkwardly at Lily. Nope. Not even a little.

Pandy Lovegood @ Potions contest
[info]questling
2019-05-02 04:57 am UTC (link)
Pandora Lovegood, her wand tucked into her upswept hair like an 11 inch hatpin, was busy potioneering. She was known for experimental charms, so her potions-work wasn't her strength, but she was inventive and practical.

Her goal today was to demonstrate a healing draught that you could give to a sleeping patient, so that you didn't have to wake them up to heal them. It was, Belby declared, an experimentally charmed potion, but he allowed it to be entered into the contest.

Seeing a potion drink itself into a sleeping person was, many spectators observed, both novel and deeply creepy.

D. Belby
[info]questling
2019-05-02 03:37 pm UTC (link)
Damocles Belby strolled in, entirely at the wrong time (if you asked any organizers, to be honest he only glanced at the official start time on the invite), resulting in some poor staff member's panic as they tried to herd him in the right direction to do an official announcement/introduction. Which is worse than herding cats as he seemed to take no heed of the poor intern's efforts and wandered around delighted at all this potions enthusiasm in the air.

He's keen to chatter and either doesn't seem to notice or care who it is who comes up to him to listen or ask questions. But it's easy to see his attention wanders when it's not about potions or related trivia, and he's quick to bounce from topic to topic based on his whims. Bring up potions and he'll happily (and very enthusiastically) talk your ear off.

Time to go see what these keen potioneers have made!

(No no, why would he go over to the stage just yet? How silly, come come, join the tour. Introductions? Officially opening the contest? Nonsense, all that can wait. And really hasn't it already started? Now let's go see that table letting off the smoke...)

This year Priscilla Lestrange is the presiding judge over the various herbology contests, casting her practiced and highly critical eye over foliage, flowers, fruits, growth patterns, and performative bonsai, and even occasionally offering a crisp and precise piece of advice.

(If Rabbit gets within five feet of any of the herbology pavilions, the grass attacks him.)

COOKERY CONTEST

Molly might have prepared a few dozen different things into the cookery contest because she couldn't decide what category would be best but also because she has a lot of nervous energy and a bit of time on her hands which come August, will no longer be the case. Her entries were as follows (and some had to be remade because of sticky fingers -- not all of them tiny gingers, either):

Dessert: Sticky Toffee Pudding
Meat Pies: Steak and Stilton Pie
Cake: Lemon Madeira Cake with Candied Peel

Sloe gin
[info]floomonkey
2019-05-02 04:13 am UTC (link)
I hereby declare there was a sloe gin contest. I vote competitors should include Aberforth Dumbledore, at least one pureblood patriarch--because this is such a Thing that apparently Prince Philip used to make his own--and also one of the big firewhiskey manufacturers as an advertising gimmick.

More importantly, there are also sales of the gins by the bottle or just a taste-test nip. Rabbit samples them all and spends the rest of the afternoon somewhat under the influence.

Merlin’s balls. This was a huge mistake. The whole thing probably, but most specifically that last hard cider. Madison was pretty sure that the maze was moving around her. It might even be trying to eat her. She could have sworn that that grass had something against one of the Lestranges. Not that was her problem. Right now her problem was she was lost in a bloody maze that may or may not be actively hostile and the point me spell was quite useless.

Madison turned the corner to yet another dead end. Although with a far less dodgy looking bit of topiary. Maybe this was a sign. With a sigh she lowered herself down to the ground not quite in defeat, but certainly not victory either. “This would be a hell of a place to go.”

For some reason (or maybe punishment), Charles has found himself on animal watching duty today. He much rather be at home with the Welsh Dragons, but the things you do for family. At least with the children he puts on a smile (not as frightening as it might seem) and is willing to answer questions about some of the more interesting animals. However, he doesn't sugar coat any of it. Charles is here to tell it like it is. Do proceed with caution.
