Who: Society and paying guests (tag yourself in)
What: Fundraiser for the Children's Legal Aid and Mentoring Society (CLAMS), organized by the Old Wizarding Literary Society (OWLS)
When: Friday evening 29 March
Where: Clarinda Macmillan Avery Arts Centre at WADA
Warnings: Probably going to be some bigoted talk but none expected beyond that.

The Clarinda Macmillan Avery Arts Centre is the premiere theatre at WADA and also contains a large reception area. Tonight it has been laid out with food and drink for those enjoying the evening. The premiere events tonight are a performance by Celestina Warbeck for her many fans and an auction for goods and services donated by patrons and businesses--including a chance to eat dinner with Celestina Warbeck.

Tonight's benefit was organized by the witches and gentlewizards of the Old Wizarding Literary Society in support of the Children's Legal Aid and Mentorship Society, a charity that provides legal support, educational funding, and mentoring to children impacted by Death Eater attacks. All ticket funds and auction proceeds will go to that good work. Goods and services used at the event were promoted by individuals and vendors.

Clarinda Macmillan Avery Arts Centre

The theatre will be used to host the concert and auction, and the food and drink will be laid out in the lobby and reception area. The music will be broadcast in the reception area during the concert and there will be additional music by WADA musicians and alumni during the auction.

Celestina Warbeck concert dining area in reception

In addition there are outside areas for smoking and the WADA gardens for more private meetings and discussions.

VOLUNTEER SLOTS

  • Rodolphus Lestrange & [Volunteer 2] get into a bidding war over a desirable prize in the auction. (Date with Celestina Warbeck? Art item? Private dinner catered by wizarding Britain's best chef and his house elves? You decide!)
  • Tairith Burke may have overindulged slightly in the champagne punch and is talking about throwing certain people into Azkaban very loudly, leading Rabastan Lestrange to take them outside to get some fresh air for their own good.
  • [Volunteer 5] disappears briefly in the middle of the event and returns looking a bit worse for wear. Were they spying or having some quality private time with a secret friend? Who knows?
  • [Volunteer 6] is extremely enthusiastic about getting an autograph from Celestina Warbeck and is sent off by her security. [Volunteer 7] gets an autograph for them anyhow.
  • Lucius Malfoy crosses party and political lines to ask Lily Potter to dance in the reception area. Shocking! Expect your name to be in the gossip columns tomorrow.

Lucius smiled in response to James' acknowledging toast and led Lily to the dance floor.

Lucius is, perhaps unsurprisingly, an excellent dancer. He is also quite good at working to his partner's level of skill and confidence and is making an effort to make Lily look good on the dancefloor. Other dancers nearby seem to have spontaneously given the pair of them extra room.

He's definitely aware of the eyes and lenses pointed at them as they dance.

Lily is not an excellent dancer; she's not very musical, and she had a handful of lessons as a kid, then the lessons to dance with James at their wedding. She is noticeably tense upon taking to the floor, and the obvious attention and gossip they're garnering doesn't help, but she does relax a little when it's easier to follow Lucius's lead than she'd been expecting.

Which gives her the mental space to think, and then ask, "Is a point being made here?"

Lucius smiles. "Several, I think, and that's just counting mine. I'll give you a run-down. I am completely transparent. Spin coming up, don't worry about the dancing, this is part of leading."

He spins her out on his arm with a very public flourish, which results in a mild but not undignified swirling of her dress, and reels her back in. "You dance very well, Madame Potter," he says as she rejoins him in the standard position. "That one will photograph well for both of us."

"But you asked about my point. I'm sure the obvious ones are obvious. Millie Bagnold has called upon British wizardry to make peace. While I have not declared myself for her New World Order, I have signaled very publicly that it I am not opposed to this agenda. I have put you into a position to do the same."

"I've put myself here, thank you," Lily corrected, calm but firm. "You've just provided an opportunity." She swallowed down any snippy remarks about agendas and the radical notion of muggleborns being people too, in favour of saying, "You have further points?"

She had, after all, come along to see what could be seen and heard. Might as well make best use of this opportunity Malfoy was providing.

"Correction noted, and appreciated. I will be asking you a similar question after I run through my laundry list, but I think you're wanting a full accounting of why I have dragged you out here."

The dance continues, and Lucius' voice doesn't carry to others on the floor. Casual observers would think they were discussing the dance, or their fellow attendees.

"On another level, we have generated fodder for the gossip columns. No matter what flights of creative writing they undertake, it will be linked to the CLAMS benefit, providing that worthy organization with weeks of free publicity.

"You might want to advise your friends and loved ones not to read Witch Weekly for about a month. They are as likely as not to fancifully paint us as Romeo and Juliet, except leaving our poor spouses with our abandoned babies. All nonsense but the kind of nonsense that happens when you are under this level of scrutiny."

Lucius made a mental note to secretly feed that story to Witch Weekly through one of his friends. Perhaps Narcissa would enjoy writing it.

"I see. I suppose I can stop feeling at all guilty for not donating to the auction now, since it appears I am gifting my face and my reputation to the benefit of the cause." There was a brisk note to her voice, though she was less annoyed specifically with Malfoy than she was with the world at large. (Perhaps him a little, for being better at negotiating it than she was. Perhaps herself a little more, for similar reasons.)

"It is a good cause. And just attending is a gift to the charity. Those who chose to provide more are also challenging their peers to rise to the occasion. Philanthropy can be as competitive as Quidditch, if perhaps generally less dangerous."

"And, since such things generally do come in threes, I come to my final point. I am studying you and your friends out to see how you react to sudden overtures from someone who you think of as your enemy. I suspect that you're going to be politically important and the more we know each other, the easier it will be to co-exist."

"Another spin coming up. The camera is to the left of the bandstand." He let her spin out more slowly this time, allowing her to control the move he'd shown her a few minutes before. There was a camera exactly where he'd told her there would be one. "Ah, there's James and Florinda." He was all smiles towards his partner's husband.

"You see, an open book. Perhaps one that should be suppressed for the common good, but not hard to figure out. May I asked why you chose to accept? I have my guesses, but I find asking is remarkably educational."

Lily was genuinely surprised at the suggestion that she might be anything like politically important. Her? But probably Malfoy was just prodding at her. She glanced over at James and Florrie with a grateful smile--it was reassuring to have them near, for all Lily couldn't possibly call on them without things getting far too messy.

It made it easier, though, to turn back and say brightly, "Why, for the unparalleled joy of your company, Mr Malfoy. I'm afraid I may be a much simpler sort of girl than you're used to."

Lucius had a ready answer, of course. "That would be a thing to be feared. I spend much of my time with socialites."

Deflection was a defense mechanism, and Lucius wasn't even seriously trying to charm Lily, so the encounter counted as a victory for his "Plan B" in any case.

And he hadn't shared one of his points, which was to proclaim to people of his class that he was intending to be a leader in the post-war world, and to lead by example. Not that he cared if she knew why he did what he did, but it wasn't a signal she and her friends were meant to receive.

"If James does want to increase his donation, I would, of course, cover my bet. But he should act quickly. Some things are better the larger the audience." Lucius responded to a musical cue he'd been waiting for. "End of the song is coming in 8 measures. I think a simple spin out would be adequate. Unless you want to try a lift spin?"

What on earth was a 'measure'? But that was beside the point. "Simple is fine," Lily said, quickly but firmly. She flashed a tight smile. "Over-complicating things and reaching too far is how we all come unstuck eventually." She didn't relax. She wouldn't, until this was well and truly over.

Lucius was definitely counting the beats now, timing his final spin so that the music would end with the proper, and properly showy, move.

"Wise words, and thank you for them. It is so easy to become entangled between the admonitions of Browning and Daedalus," he replied. "Yet even Daedalus flew to freedom." He smiled and spun her out to finish the dance at full extension. He applauded vigorously, despite having noticed a few flaws in the performance. He'd mention them to the staff later. "Thank you for the dance, Madame Potter."

He's prepared to escort her back to James or to have her flee to the safety of the familiar.

The sound of applause filled the room and jarred James' mind from his conversation and dance with Florrie. His head turned to Lily, and he noticed that the applause was for the pair's dance ending. "See, everyone else is glad that it's over with," he joked bitterly. "Thank you for the dance, Florrie. Get a head start to the catering table, Lils and I will meet you there momentarily," he offered in hopes that the girl would find another to dance with or simply take off running to busy herself with hors d'oeuvre.

He took a few long strides to reach the pair once the applause died down and the music resumed. A hand found Lily's and he gave it a gentle tug to pull her away from the man and into his stance. "Brilliantly done," James commented in Lucius' direction. "The dance lessons worked out well for you, Lucius," he added lightly with a wink. "Enjoy the rest of the party," he dismissed them and led Lily away.

"You alright?" he asked evenly once they put distance between them and Lucius.

"Thestis Greengrass deserves the credit then, she was a delightful teacher." He bowed to Lily. "Thank you madame, it was a pleasure."

Lucius smiled as James lead his wife to safety, and looked for his next partner. He had an obligation to dance with Celestina Warbeck sometime this evening, but perhaps not immediately. First a breath of fresh air.

Lily barely had time to start second-guessing her urge to get out of there as fast as she could before James was at her side, and she'd never been quite so delighted and relieved to see him. (Delighted and relieved enough to not be bothered about being passed between the men like some sort of high-performance racing broom.)

"Thank you for the dance," she said, the words and her smile as much to anyone else still paying attention as to Malfoy himself.

And as James led her away, she could finally feel the tension unknitting itself from her shoulders. Her smile widened, and she tilted her head briefly against James's shoulder, knocking against his side as they walked across the room. "Better now," she said, on a breath, and gave a little giggle. "I was so worried I was going to stand on his foot in front of bloody everyone."

The sound of her giggle made him smile. It was a heavenly sound and right now it served as an indicator that what she was saying was indeed the truth. She was okay.

"Would that have been so terrible?" he offered lightly with a widening grin. His arm wrapped around her back as if he were giving her a side hug during their walk. "You could have played it off and just stomped on it. Repeatedly, actually," he continued with a low chuckle.

He then stopped walking once he felt they put an adequate enough distance between them and Lucius. He turned to her and scrunched his nose slightly. "Did he say anything suspicious to you?"

Lily grinned at the idea of stomping on Malfoy's foot. Of course she wouldn't have--because it would be rude and unkind, and also because then she'd have been that terrible muggleborn who doesn't know how to act properly, what can you expect from that sort...

"Hmm." Lily thought her way back through the dance, putting aside her emotional turmoil and just considering what had actually been said. "Define suspicious. He certainly has lots of plans afoot. Looking to the future. Which he's hardly alone in right now." She looked around the room, humming with conversation and energy that had shed the cloak of fear Voldemort had cast over all of wizarding society.

His eyebrows lifted high up on his forehead, well over the frames of his glasses, at Lily's reveal. "First of all, ew..." he referenced these plans that Lucius had. The Malfoy's were a social family, and he could only assume that any plan the man had was dedicated to making a statement. People didn't need smoke and mirrors they needed a true change of heart and change of action. He could only hope that Voldemort's downfall sparked that.

"Secondly," he added with as he laid a finger under her chin as gentle encouragement to look him dead in the eye. "Suspicious defined as...anything that sounded remotely condescending or belittling in any way that would merit a hexing...even at a Gala" he asked innocently.

"So sorry," Lily said, not sounding a bit of it. "He was perfectly pleasant. I might even say solicitous." Her mouth twitched toward a smile. "Though he did go on a bit. But you may not--" No twitch about it, she was definitely grinning. "--hex someone at a charity gala for liking to show off his vocabulary. Come on." She tucked her hand firmly around James's elbow, and tugged him toward the refreshments. "I need a drink. I know I said I wouldn't, but one glass of champagne won't hurt, and I think I've earned it." She blinked then, and frowned a little. "What did you do with Florrie?"

The confirmation that Lucius had been on his best behavior was a relief. "I don't think you really mean that," he joked as he peered at her playfully. Of course Lily meant it, and he knew it. She was a true peacekeeper.

James chuckled softly as he followed the pull she gave him. "You have most certainly earned it," he confirmed as he reached out for a glass once the table got within arms reach. He handed the glass to her and then picked up one for himself. "She kept me from hexing Lucius at a charity gala," he answered with a twitch of his lips in trying to conceal his smile. "And she threated to stomp on my foot should I try and ask her for your medical information while you're conscious and of sound mind," he added with a wave of his hand.

"That's my girl," Lily said proudly, clinking her glass against her husband's and taking a sip. It was tart and bubbly and she had no idea whether it was the good stuff or not, but she quite liked it anyway.

She had another sip, and got that thoughtful little crease between her eyebrows. "You know, there's something he said. About being politically important. I thought he meant me and he was just winding me up, but maybe he meant you. Or maybe Sirius. Maybe both of you." Her frown deepened. "I don't know. I don't think like these people." Which had never bothered her before now. Before she wasn't sure just what she was seeing.

He rolled his eyes, but the smile was still present on his face. “Ironically, I wasn’t mad about it,” he commented with a lazy lift of his brow. Mainly because the passion the woman held for patient confidentiality reassured him of her knowledge of Remus’ condition. However he’d be lying if he said he didn’t respect the spitfire.

James’ eyes settled on Lily, admiring her for a moment until her face contorted into that of thought. His own features frowned softly in curiosity as he processed what she said. “Interesting...” he eventually said. He tapped his glass with the pad of a finger that held it. A tick revealing his thought process. A sense of doubt colored his features and he shook his head shortly. “Dunno about that, Sirius and I are politically nothing. You’d be more politically important than any of us.,” he stated and shifted closer to her idly. He took another sip of his drink. “That’s a good thing,” he reminded with a gentle nudge of his elbow to hers,

Lily gave James a smile, grateful and fond all in one. "Well, we can think about it more later." And with input from the others. That was the whole point of being in the Order, after all; they didn't have to do this all by themselves. Didn't have to think of everything. Weren't alone. "For now, I'd like to finish this, and then I quite fancy the idea of a dance with a chap that I actually like." Her smile widened, as she added whimsically, "Though I don't know where I could possibly find one of those."

He nodded in both acceptance and agreement of Lily's words. They could think more about it later and even dissect it to a million pieces later. For now, things have been eventful enough for one night, and there was no reason to continue that trend further. They should simply try and enjoy the rest of the gala and the rest of the night as a whole.

The corners of his mouth curled up more and more slowly into a smile on his face. "Ooooooh," he commented with a peering gaze in her direction. "I don't think you'll find any of those here. Have you seen this crowd?" he played along with a look of mock pity on his face. "Guess you'll have to settle with me," he added.

Lily hummed thoughtfully, though her lingering fond smile ruined any real pretense. "Well, I suppose you'll do." She tucked her fingers into the lapels of his formal robes, and tugged them a little closer together. "Just this once, of course. Don't go getting used to it or anything."

The continuation merited a wider grin to form on James' face. The kind that he couldn't stifle even if he wanted to articulate a fake sense of hurt. The pull closer that she gave also may have had something to do with that smile. He sat his glass on the nearby table and wrapped both arms around her waist to both lock in that closeness and remove what little lingering distance was between of them. "Now you're just being unrealistic," he stated with a tsk. "I've already gotten used to it."
