Who: Society and paying guests (tag yourself in)
What: Fundraiser for the Children's Legal Aid and Mentoring Society (CLAMS), organized by the Old Wizarding Literary Society (OWLS)
When: Friday evening 29 March
Where: Clarinda Macmillan Avery Arts Centre at WADA
Warnings: Probably going to be some bigoted talk but none expected beyond that.

The Clarinda Macmillan Avery Arts Centre is the premiere theatre at WADA and also contains a large reception area. Tonight it has been laid out with food and drink for those enjoying the evening. The premiere events tonight are a performance by Celestina Warbeck for her many fans and an auction for goods and services donated by patrons and businesses--including a chance to eat dinner with Celestina Warbeck.

Tonight's benefit was organized by the witches and gentlewizards of the Old Wizarding Literary Society in support of the Children's Legal Aid and Mentorship Society, a charity that provides legal support, educational funding, and mentoring to children impacted by Death Eater attacks. All ticket funds and auction proceeds will go to that good work. Goods and services used at the event were promoted by individuals and vendors.

The theatre will be used to host the concert and auction, and the food and drink will be laid out in the lobby and reception area. The music will be broadcast in the reception area during the concert and there will be additional music by WADA musicians and alumni during the auction.

In addition there are outside areas for smoking and the WADA gardens for more private meetings and discussions.

VOLUNTEER SLOTS

  • Rodolphus Lestrange & [Volunteer 2] get into a bidding war over a desirable prize in the auction. (Date with Celestina Warbeck? Art item? Private dinner catered by wizarding Britain's best chef and his house elves? You decide!)
  • Tairith Burke may have overindulged slightly in the champagne punch and is talking about throwing certain people into Azkaban very loudly, leading Rabastan Lestrange to take them outside to get some fresh air for their own good.
  • [Volunteer 5] disappears briefly in the middle of the event and returns looking a bit worse for wear. Were they spying or having some quality private time with a secret friend? Who knows?
  • [Volunteer 6] is extremely enthusiastic about getting an autograph from Celestina Warbeck and is sent off by her security. [Volunteer 7] gets an autograph for them anyhow.
  • Lucius Malfoy crosses party and political lines to ask Lily Potter to dance in the reception area. Shocking! Expect your name to be in the gossip columns tomorrow.

Fabian had also been on his way out to the gardens when he overheard parts of a rather curious exchange between Arlo Mulciber and Rodolphus. Still and silent in a bank of ferns, he wordlessly and wandlessly cast a concealment on himself and waited them out, not even daring to use his phone to tell his twin where he was. He closed his eyes and counted off a full minute after both sets of footsteps faded before he dropped the concealment and proceeded out to the garden, intent on his own cigarette case so he wouldn't be thought to have any attention left for people talking in the hallways.

And sure enough, there was Rodolphus, enjoying one himself. Fabian lit up and wandered over to join him. "Not a fan, I take it?"

Rodolphus laughed, easily letting Arlo's nonsense roll off him like it was nothing. Which as far as he was concerned, it was not a concern. "I must confess that I can't say I particularly care for the Singing Sorceress, but she does draw a crowd." He shrugged. "So, I will yield my opinion and allow the masses to enjoy the show."

"I won't argue with them, but she's not for me either. I feel for Mum. She likes Warbeck less than I do and she's stuck sitting through it." Fabian felt Celestina Warbeck was a pale imitation of Muggle artists in the same genre and not up to standards for wizarding music either. His own mother being a composer, he had strong feelings about that.

Rodolphus might well have heard his speculation to Rabbit that Molly liked Warbeck just because it annoyed their mother so much.

"And I get to come out here in the relatively fresh air and do anything else."

"Ah yes, the challenge of being polite among ... contemporaries." The word was said loosely for lack of a better word.

"I am actually surprised to not see my brother at your side." There was a warmth there, as was typical when Rodolphus spoke of Rabastan.

Fabian couldn't help himself, or didn't; he returned the smile in equal measure. "I'm sure we'll catch up later. He and I had dinner recently so we're not overdue, and it'll be more fun to analyse this evening's amusements in the aftermath.

"Which reminds me, I know I've offered my condolences, but I was aorry to hear from him that he'd been dragged in by the Aurors, and I assume that means the same for you. I know the timing was coincidentally terrible but they have actual crimes to investigate. Unless they've declared everything to do with Godric's Hollow closed so they can go harass everyone who wasn't there." He rolled his eyes a little and exhaled his irritation along with the smoke.

"The DMLE is only doing their job. It is understandable they have preoccupied trying to maintain a semblance of peace." It was the party line and it served him well to sound like he believed it. Still, the realm was in a rather fragile state. "I am, however, a bit concerned about the implications of foul play." He exhaled a puff of smoke. "I would so hate to think that now families such as ours might become targets."

"Oh, they already are," Fabian answered with some annoyance. "At least at the DMLE. Apparently someone pulled in my sister for a chat after that stupid Prophet article. She and I disagree on a lot of things but she's completely preoccupied with her children and the idea that she's a vigilante is simply laughable. As for the rest, the actual vigilantes--I'm glad nothing has happened since to anyone. Perhaps it will all quiet down."

The hint of mulishness that had crept into Fabian's voice evaporated as he added, "I told Rabbit I thought it was a bit too quiet, though--and I do wonder about that. On both sides. The longer it's quiet, the better it is, or the worse it'll be when it starts again. I can easily imagine some quote-unquote activists for freedom deciding to make a violent example of anyone whose politics are too conservative. I don't like to think your father was a trial run. Have you talked to Rabbit about the idea of sabotage? That's terrifying."

"In a quest for true and lasting peace, would it not be better for each side to concede some ground and work toward a safer future together?" The how and nuance contained the art of debate. And Rodolphus had a long career doing such on an international scope for the better of Britain. There might also be the things he did in the dark, but there was a time and place.

Lucius did seem quite sure of such overtures. It wasn't the worst idea to float similar notions, and see where they might land. "Although I don't like the idea of anyone being targeted anymore."

"I think peace is important. And as a professional negotiator myself, I'm a firm believer in settling things at the table, within limits." This, Fabian could say with a good heart, even though he suspected his limits were somewhat different to Rodolphus Lestrange's. "Some things must be preserved or we won't be recognisable as ourselves any more."

"And if we were to be philosophical, one might argue that is the biggest question of this generation. How do we build the future while not losing our heritage and history." Rodolphus already felt too much of the shift with the success of WizTech. And also that with each generation the way of his life was brought up in seemed to fade just a little more.

"I suppose the answer is something that men like us might help shape."

Fabian's eyebrows rose a little. "An admirable sentiment, but not one often directed toward me. Usually people who want to shape the future prefer to approach Gideon on such matters." He left unspoken whether he thought it was the seven minutes' difference in their ages or their apparent politics that influenced those inclined to address such questions to Gideon.

Rodolphus paused. Considering. "Should we wish to comment on the shape of the future, it is our duty to be part of the discourse."

"Speaking is fine," Fabian said with a smile that didn't broadcast its sarcasm but certainly left room for Rodolphus to notice it, "but becoming part of the discourse requires people to listen."

Fabian laughed. "Fair enough," he told Rodolphus agreeably. "And there's certainly room for a broader exchange of views with the new winds blowing through Britain."
