Entry tags:aaron, alex, arlo, bazzer, group, kenneth, rowan, ryan, sophie, thorne, z - 1st tribe - day 20

Time to move out-open to everyone leaving on the 20th
Who: Kenneth and anyone/everyone leaving on the 20th
When: Mid morning
Where: Heading east
What: Taking a break

There was no way to keep up the grueling pace all day, at least not for most. Kenneth made sure to call plenty of halts, at least as many as he possibly could, but they still weren't making the speed they'd need to get to the safe camp. Fortunately, he'd sort of planned on that, his worst case scenario. If they didn't make it, he'd circle the carts, build a fire and people would just have to stay awake. The Laughers were smart, he hoped if he took down enough of them, they'd just back off. Did Laughers have a concept for unacceptable losses?

Kenneth didn't know, but he did know that would burn through his ammunition, something he'd already decided was worth it to protect those coming with him. He looked around and squinted up at the sun. Sacrificing a blanket, he tore strips of it with his knife then handed them to the closest person. "Soak these with some water and get people to put them on the back of their necks and heads. It might help."

Quinn had been nearby and he had to interject. "Hey, Rowan." He nodded to Sophie, "Sophie." He glanced down at the younger girl's feet and tsked sympathetically. He was barefoot as well, but he'd just had an idea which he would pass on to them. "Why don't you girls have a seat up here while we're not moving and we'll see if this helps." He took both of them gently by the elbow and steered them toward the back of one of the carts. He'd made it this far without complaining but he didn't think Rowan had to suffer. Plus, Sophie looked so soft, his black little heart could barely handle her cheerful acceptance of her discomfort.

Sophie gave Rowan a sympathetic look. She wished that there was something that she could to do help the older woman. Sophie knew she wouldn't like being in her place here. "You should, and if you do I can help someone else pull for a while or something, with two people it wouldn't be as hard, right? We all need to try and pitch in and not wear ourselves out too much." Sophie offered before turning.

It was Quinn. Sophie recognized him automatically and she gave him a smile and nodded back. When he looked at her feet she curled her toes in. Her nailpolish was chipped now and her feet were definitely suffering. She didn't want to complain, though. There wasn't much they could do about it and complaining wouldn't help morale any. Sophie didn't fight any and let him lead her to the back of a cart. She tilted her head curiously. "Thanks." She looked at Rowan and then at Quinn. She got herself up onto the back of the cart and then looked at Ro, trying to see if she'd need help.

Rowan apparently wasn't going to get a choice in the matter, so she waddled along with Quinn and Sophie, and gave Quinn a kiss on the cheek for his gentlemanliness. "Thank you, hun. That's very sweet." But she didn't need help getting in - if she could climb a tree, she could at least climb a cart; she got in and sat down, immediately looking entirely relieved. "...whew..."

Quinn rolled his eyes, not the least bit finished with these too. "Bare with me here," he said as he bent his head over Rowan's knees. He caught one of her abused feet and, after unwinding his damp strip of cloth from around his neck, he proceeding to bandage her foot with it. He was careful to give her tan even coverage over her sole and tied the wrapping off before stealing her other strip to wrap her other foot. "There we go. Not too tight?" he asked Rowan as he turned his attention to Sophie's dainty feet with the same treatment in mind.

Sophie sat there, relatively still, though she swing her feet slightly. She watched as Quinn wrapped Ro's feet with a damp blanket. It was actually a good idea if she thought about it. She held her feet up for him. "That's a cool idea." She told Quinn with a thankful smile, tilting her head slightly.

He gave Sophie a wry smile but when he responded, there was no bite to his words. "That's me. Always thinkin'." As he straightened up, he rubbed the palm of his hand over the sore spot in his side. Over the past two weeks the agonizing pain had pulled inward and dulled down to an ache. It wasn't like a band around his lungs anymore. Now it was more like a stitch that he just couldn't walk off. "Honestly, Ro, I think bumping along in that cart will do you more harm than good," He patted Sophie thoughtlessly on the knee. "Wouldn't it be sorta like asking for something to bust loose early, bouncing over the rocks and ruts and dried creek beds?" Truth was, this whole train was not moving as quickly as it should and Quinn was starting to worry. It was past noon now and they were still within sight of the forest. Hell, he could throw a rock and hit the trees. Not good at all.

"I plan to keep on walking. I just need a bit of a rest." Rowan said easily. Though what she really wanted to do was sit down and take a long nap. Her back was getting sore, too - she had a lot of weight pulling her forwards and that meant more stress on her back muscles to keep her upright. "Just give me a couple minutes - thank you for the blanket, though."
