Entry tags:aaron, alex, arlo, bazzer, group, kenneth, rowan, ryan, sophie, thorne, z - 1st tribe - day 20

Time to move out-open to everyone leaving on the 20th
Who: Kenneth and anyone/everyone leaving on the 20th
When: Mid morning
Where: Heading east
What: Taking a break

There was no way to keep up the grueling pace all day, at least not for most. Kenneth made sure to call plenty of halts, at least as many as he possibly could, but they still weren't making the speed they'd need to get to the safe camp. Fortunately, he'd sort of planned on that, his worst case scenario. If they didn't make it, he'd circle the carts, build a fire and people would just have to stay awake. The Laughers were smart, he hoped if he took down enough of them, they'd just back off. Did Laughers have a concept for unacceptable losses?

Kenneth didn't know, but he did know that would burn through his ammunition, something he'd already decided was worth it to protect those coming with him. He looked around and squinted up at the sun. Sacrificing a blanket, he tore strips of it with his knife then handed them to the closest person. "Soak these with some water and get people to put them on the back of their necks and heads. It might help."

Now that he had shoes, Ryan didn't mind the walking at all. Helena and Cross had been gone a long time, and it wasn't as if they could exactly send the rest of them a text message or call them to let them know everything was okay, so it only made sense to go to them. That, and the fact that there was very little food around camp anymore. His own hunger had driven him to uncharacteristic quietness, since he didn't want his irritability to cause him to snap at anyone. His bruises from the fight with Rook had only just faded, and he hadn't even gotten the chance to talk to the other man before he'd taken off with Payne and Clay and the little kid who'd showed up at camp a few days ago. He felt bad for the kid, because how would a kid cope with showing up someplace like this? While it was true that Meredith was young, too, she wasn't anywhere near as little as the blond kid, whose name Ryan couldn't remember right offhand.

He'd been plodding along in a daze from the hot sun, and when Thorne gently poked at him to get his attention, he looked over. "Thanks," he said with a smile as Thorne handed him a strip of wet blanket to put on the back of his neck. "This'll help."

"Hope so. I'm a little worried about heat stroke, but we can't afford to slow down or we won't make a safe camp tonight." He rubbed at his shoulder that was smarting from taking his turn pulling the cart. Rotating hit slowly, he sighed softly. "I don't know, Ry..might not make it there tonight. I hope the old man's got a plan for that. I'm a little worried about Quinn and Rowan." He glanced at the two in question, trying not to be too obvious that he was checking on them. "How're you doing?"

"I was wonderin' about that too," Ryan said when Thorne said he hoped Kenneth had a plan. "I'm gonna be pissed if we walk all day and then get eaten by laughers, ya know?" He was joking, but also not. He knew Kenneth had a gun, at least. When Thorne glanced toward Quinn and Rowan, he did too, then turned his eyes back to Thorne. "I'm okay," he said. He wouldn't feel right about complaining when Rowan, who was a billion months pregnant, seemed to be moving along cheerfully enough. He was hot and tired and hungry, but then so was everyone else. "How 'bout you?" He let his fingers brush over Thorne's as they walked, very briefly.

"That would suck. But at least there'd be more food for everyone else?" Well, it was Thorne and he had to find a bright side. It was a thing for him. He smiled at Ryan's fingers brushed his. "I think I might go give Ro my birks...they'd be a bit big, but they'd protect her feet somewhat." He hesitated to answer Ryan's question though, "Hot," he admitted, "kinda like everyone else. As soon as we reach the sweet grind at least people can eat a bit as we walk. That should help."

"Yeah, that'll help," Ryan agreed. He'd stopped walking by this point as he saw that Kenneth had called a break, and he stretched upward and then squatted, putting the piece of blanket Thorne had handed him over his head. He was afraid to sit down for fear he wouldn't be able to force himself to get up again, so squatting worked. "I know she'd appreciate it," he said of Rowan and Thorne's birks. He smiled warmly at Thorne and then began rotating his shoulders and tilting his neck from one side to the other, stretching out a bit more.

Rowan was tired. Really, really tired. Her back ached, her neck ached, her bare feet (she finally gave up on the socks and left them for the pesks in a moment of insanity) ached - especially when she had to pick her way through sharp, bent pieces of straw. She was hot, too hot, and her mouth felt like it was filled with leather dust and cotton. Sweat occasionally dripped into her eyes. But she wasn't going to admit defeat if she could help it. She was not, for the life of her, going to show weakness just because she had something like eight pounds of baby in her belly, goddammit.

So her feet just kept walking, even after Kenneth called a stop, and it took her a few seconds to realize everyone else had.

Sophie's pajamas were light and cool, but even she was sweating. It wasn't too hard for her to keep moving, other than the fact that she wasn't used to walking around barefoot. Sophie liked her shoes. Sh wished that she had even flip flops at the moment. She was pretty sure that Rowan, the pregnant lady, wasn't having much fun either. Sophie pushed her hair out of her face and moved over to Rowan, slowly. She'd finally stopped and Sophie moved over to her. "Hi, how are you doing?" She asked in a friendly tone. She was tired herself. She could only imagine how she'd be fairing with extra baby weight.

"I'm doing alright." Ro said, refusing to admit that she was bloody well exhausted. "You doing alright, there, sunshine? If you're getting tired you can tell Kenneth, I bet he'd let you ride for a little while."

Sophie smiled at the older woman. She could tell she was kind of tired, but if she didn't want to admit it Sophie wasn't going to bother her. "I'm okay, I can handle walking for a while longer. How about you? You're barefoot too, I bet your feet are taking it about as well as mine, huh?" Sophie said. She had a friendly tone as she spoke, even though she was tired.

Rowan grinned slightly. "My ankles are swollen and the bottoms of my feet would be blistered up if I had shoes on - I'm out of shape! I guess I shouldn't have spent all my time back at the field camp meandering in a particularly lazy fashion. I have great upper body strength from climbing the trees now, though." She laughed and stretched, and her spine made an unfortunate cricking sound. "Bleh. Maybe I'll take someone up on their offer and ride for a bit, but I don't want someone to have to pull an extra hundred-fifty-odd pounds around, y'know?"

Arlo was looking to have a quiet word with Kenneth - especially now that blondie the rat-boy aka Clay had gone missing. With Payne. And a gun. Fucking fantastic. He rolled his neck (which ached slightly, but the walk was nothing he couldn't handle - he had a decent pair of boots now, ad his time in the desert had been infinitely harder going) and tried to catch the man's eye. Although of course, there were other issues. Issues like Rowan (dumbfuck) looking like she was about to keel over. Hadn't anyone figured it'd be a good plan to build a cart to put her in, too? Jesus.

Kenneth did have a cart for Rowan, sadly, the woman had taken in her head to walk and rather than try and hoist her bodily into it, Kenneth had settled for asking after each stop if she was ready to ride. Of course, she wasn't. He was also more than hopeing he could convince Angelica to ride so that they could prop up a blanket and keep her shaded before her face burned off.

When he caught Arlo's gaze, Kenneth handed the last strip of blanket off, tucked his knife away and walked over. He wasn't fond of Arlo, but he suspected the other man liked it that way. He inclined his head slightly. "How you doing?"

"I ain't the one to be worried about, Sarge. Oughtta get Rowan offa her big dumb pregnant feet. But there's somethin' else I need to talk to you about...uh, kinda private-like"
He glanced over to Angelica, hoping she was far enough out of earshot. He didn't want her harping at him again and interupting what he had to say to Kenneth. This was important, there was no time to be fucking around, and all Angelica seemed to do was fuck around.

Kenneth's eyes went cold and remote and he considered calling Arlo on his attitude, but really, what point? Rowan was an adult and if she wanted to walk..well, it was up to the doc to stop her, not him. The man was too fucking set in his ways. "Colonel," he corrected absently, much too military to let that kind of degradation slip without comment. "I'm a full colonel, not a sargeant."

He nodded then walked a few steps away from the rest of the group, not willing to go too far, but far enough that if they kept their voices down they wouldn't be overheard too much. "What's up?"

Aaron had taken his turns pulling the carts, all the while trying to keep an eye on his bundled sleeping bag. It contained one snarling and spitting new mother and, at last count, four little bundles of joy. The ill-tempered parent had proved to be a lovely deep chocolate, ginger and white tortoise-shell pattered cat with gangly looking long legs and a ridiculous looking puff on the end of it's tail. Except the more that he'd stared at her, wondering what to do about this problem, the more he'd realized that she didn't look like a normal cat. She was just...different. Like the trees in this place were still trees but they were different.

He'd managed to take the new mother by surprise and had bundled them all into his sleeping bag and down the tree, into the basket. She had not been pleased but at last check she hadn't eaten any kittens in her rage. All were well.

The same could not be said for Aaron. When someone handed him a soaked strip of cloth he'd blotted his face and neck carefully. He'd had a ruddy tan in the summer as he always did, but every summer he always got one good burn. The blistered would rise, drain and peel and then he'd be left golden brown until October. The tightness in his cheeks told him that he was well on his way.

Alex was helping pull the cart with Aaron for a time and was glad for the break. The heat was such that he had taken his shirt off for the hard work and had thrown it in the back of the cart, though his rosary was still around his neck. He wouldn't part with that. Groaning, he took an offered piece of wet blanket from someone and placed it on his shoulders. He had already begun developing a good tan, he always tanned well, but now he was burning on his shoulders and he coudl feel it.

"How's mama-cat?" he asked the other man. They hadn't spoken much as they had pulled the cart, but the concern was there. Once Alex rested a little he would see about tending the others, making sure they were alright. This idea was insane, but he couldn't argue with the logic at all. This entire situation was outside his realm of experience, he was not going to judge and cause problems if he didn't have a better solution.

Aaron sighed and leaned against the cart and gave the padre a wide grin when there was an answering warning growl from the basket in the corner. "She sounds alright. I was thinking about maybe snatching one of the pesks out of the cages in the other cart." He chuckled as the growl changed pitch. He wasn't sure if that was a positive or negative response. "But I think I might lose a few fingers if I try it." Groaning, he sat down with his back against the cart to give his baking feet a break in his boots. Besides, it was shadier down there. "Catch a breather while you can, Father." He'd been told the blonde man was a priest and he certainly had the rosary. Nothing else about Alex really screamed clergyman to Aaron though.

Unlacing his own boots Alex nodded and slid his stinky feet out. He didn't have any socks nor were these originally his own boots. He'd found them near a skeleton of what he assumed had once been the previous owner. Wearing a dead mans boots bothered him less than he suspected it should have. Taking them from a corpse however, or at least a skeleton, did bother him and he prayed for the nameless man and gave thanks for his boots daily.

"Keep your fingers," he cautioned with a weak smile, "You'll need them later. Anyways, this is just a rest stop, not a permanent place," he flexed his feet and felt like he could feel the skin tearing, but when he looked they were fine. Tired, sore and developing blisters, but fine. "I never much wanted to be a missionary and was always glad that if I had to be one at some point, I was living in modern times with malaria vaccines and whatnot. And then I ended up here. I keep wondering what the Spanish missionaries thought when they were in the new world conquering the Incas and Mayans and spreading Catholicism. And if they had to pull the carts," he grinned and closed his eyes.

"Naw, the Spaniards have good horses." He pointed out this fact like it was logical to assume those were who pulled the carts. Not the conquored people. Oh no. "This is sort of like the ultimate mission though, isn't it? Who knows who's out there." Aaron's blue eyes cast off into the vastness to the south before heading back around to the priest's face. "Catholic priest, right?" He offered his hand. "Aaron Ackles formerly of Ontario by way of the Yukon. Anglican, by the way." He chuckled, his easy grin not daunted by the heat and the hard work. He was the hardy hands-on breed of scientist.

"My liver for a car," Bazzer moaned as they stopped. He didn't have shoes and while his feet had toughened up during his time here, they still hurt. And it was still hot. He was debating nakedness. He hadn't done it yet, but his winter pants and sweatshirt were designed for Kansas City winter, not Wonderland heat. He hadn't worked this hard in general in....ever. He was not an athletic person. He was a thinking person. And this was much too athletic for him.

He had at least managed to bring the skins he was working on in one cart, though it was heavy and difficult. He thought they were tanning and drying nicely though. Bazzer was glad of that at least. And he fully supported their move. He just supported it with moving trucks and wheeled dollies. And muscle bound idiots moving his things as opposed to him moving his things. He was so spoiled.

Angelica smirked as she stopped pretty near to Bazzer. Her face was bright red, it was definitely getting sunburned. She wasn't wearing her jacket for the moment either, so where her arms were exposed they were a bright pink. Even the back of her neck was suffering. She just wasn't good with dealing with the sun, but she'd be damned if she'd complain. Though she figured if she dropped dead from this it would be easier. Angelica moved toward Bazzer, pushing wisps of hair from her face. "My kidney for more sunscreen." She shot at him, grinning. She was wearing her boots, she was moving easily, she felt kind of sorry for the people without shoes.

Bazzer has moved from sunburned and was firmly in the peeling stages now thanks to his work tanning hides. He would be very tan when this all finished. He wasn't very concerned about it, though anything other than 'pasty' was a marked difference for him. Pushing his glasses up on his nose, he replied, "Why? You don't like wrinkles and skin cancer?" he joked. Skin cancer was the least of their worries in this place.

Angelica snorted and gestured to her red face. "More like I don't like sunburn. I think I'd rather take the wrinkles ahead of time than have to deal with this." She joked. It was kind of annoying. "How you doing without shoes, you holding up?" She asked to be sure. She felt bad, she had her boots, and she wasn't as bad as some people thought....

"No one likes sunburn," he pointed out reasonably. He was just as badly burned as she was and she at least was still wearing a shirt. He had abandoned his a while ago. "Oh, my feet are cracked and blistering...on the other hand, they could probably go on strike and separate from my body and I'd never notice until I lost my balance and fell over. Honestly...they hurt like hell and I'm used to it by now. What's a little more walking?" he asked philosophically. If nothing else, this entire experience was making him tougher. He was never very tough before and even now, while he wasn't perhaps the most manly, butch and macho guy, there was no denying that he was a stronger person for everything. It was a quiet strength. "I obviously did not think this nomad idea through," he added, joking. It had been his.
