Today's so-old-it's-new-again lesson in the fundamental principles of science: correlation does not imply causation. Rotting meat doesn't spontaneously generate maggots. Rising ice cream sales don't cause violent crime. Vaccines don't cause autism. Genetically modified crops don't cause allergies.

And the arrival of a large community of displaced and, admittedly, often rather unusual individuals does not cause the arrival of violent giants of mysterious origin.

Some of us came here on bikes.

Ice cream shortages cause violent crime.

I'm willing to say they might cause violent crimes.

I might even be willing to say you have personal knowledge of a few of them.

I am perhaps a slight argument against the violent giants statement, though by and large it holds true.

Right, no one said it could never involve causation. You will occasionally get a violent giant or two to support any given theory regarding violent giants. The danger is in drawing unsupported conclusions.

And one violent giant against a dearth of other violent giants among the refugees is a very shaky foundation for any theory. Though Edward is better described as a violent giant in potentia since he is quite capable of not being violent.

How can these people not be grateful to have vaccinations against what used to kill?

And what sort of bike can hold a violent giant of mysterious origin? It can't be a unicycle.

You'll have to ask a psychologist that one, I'm afraid. I don't have a clue.

But as regards violent giants (or, as we're more accurately describing them now, violent giants in potentia) on bikes, I found a motorcycle perfectly suitable.

Surely there's one somewhere in this tower, with our diversity of residents. Perhaps if those "anti-vaccination" people had actually lived with such diseases, they could appreciate the development.

Now, don't be silly. You mean gigans violentus in potentia.

I'm not denying that ice cream can, in certain circumstances, be the motivating factor in individual acts of violence. That would be to fly in the face of logic and human nature.

It's possible for others!

In all seriousness, fear is an extremely powerful brainwashing drug. All it takes is one person to say something, even if -- using one of your examples -- someone comes out and says "yeah all that stuff I said before was made up".

Like Helena, I am caught wondering how these people who are against vaccination can't be thankful that generally, these diseases are no longer a threat -- or shouldn't be. I must wonder if any of these people truly understand just how devastating they are, how horrible they are to watch as they take away the young and the old.

The inoculation for smallpox was not unheard of when I was a child, and my father decreed that myself and my sisters would have the procedure -- he would be pleased, I believe, to know that so many other diseases are also able to be eradicated.

I tend to think the culprit is the belief that you're special, as much as it is ignorance. But I could probably be called jaded.
