First week of classes is over, and my schedule's all sorted out. I'm on track to take the LSAT in December, and finish my thesis and therefore my Classics degree by June. And that's not counting the classes I'm taking for fun or the competition I'll be entering next semester-- or, you know, work, or a social life.

In other words, I'm basically not going to sleep for like... a year. Or ever again. But if it works, it'll be worth it.

[VERONICA]

We'll have to figure out how to fit time for just us in between school and work and everything else. But I think we can manage that, don't you?

[FRIENDS*]
Also, if you haven't already heard from Dean, we're planning to get a place outside of the tower. Whenever that happens, I'll let you know.

*OOC: Off the top of my head, this includes everyone from his home world, Veronica Mars, Paige Matthews, Annie Sawyer, Mara Jade, Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Illyana Rasputina, Moya, Ben Stone, Molly Carpenter, Christine Chapel, and anyone else I'm forgetting who knows Sam well and/or has had ~deep-ish~ conversations with him at some point. If you're not sure, ask :)

If you didn't mind, that might be better. I'd feel a little awkward about it since I've never talked to him before, but I've read a lot about him. At least with you, it's not like the books gave details about the worst moments of your childhood. But I'll talk to him about it at some point, obviously, if he's got an idea for figuring out the magic behind it enough to make a Sorting Hat or something.

A smarter government might have had systems in place to stop him, I suppose. But he was pretty determined, so I think he'd have found a way around it. People like him are willing to do whatever they have to do, you know?

I can't blame you for wanting to work at a library. I really like libraries, myself. You should do whatever seems most appealing to you.

He's very friendly and willing to interact with new people and teach when and so he chooses. But I will send him a message and let you know what he says. If that's agreeable with you? Feel free to ask him too! In the books, I think I get like five lines of dialogue. I'm okay with them not knowing everything about me. I get more mistaken for the actress that looks like me than anything.

I think you're right there about his levels of determination and willing to do whatever was necessary. Fortunately for the majority of the population there was a group that was more determined than him and someone willing to rally the troops and save the day.

Right now, I'm just taking some general education classes under advisement of my counselor. There are so many choices!

Alright, that works. And I'll try talking to him, too. I'm a little jealous of your relative anonymity, to be honest. Although having everything out in the open has its upsides, too.

People willing to fight back like that are my favorite types of people. There are an awful lot of them here, have you noticed? You get props for being one of them.

That's not a bad idea. What are you taking?

I'll contact him soon and let you know what he says. Sam, at least you don't get confused for a sparkly vampire that can see the future. Or Ashley Greene. But I'll take my relative anonymity though. But as with you, at least you don't have to explain over and over and over and over your background and beginnings and why exactly you do what you do.

Now that you mention, there are. The Tesseract is showing good taste in that. Oh, you're making me blush. Thank you Sam!

Oh, lord. Do you really get confused for one of those Twilight vampires? I really hate those freaking things. But your double is one of the 'good' ones, right?

Hey, I'm just being honest. But you're welcome.

I do! It's really quite an annoyance. But nothing compared to what it must be like for you. Yes thankfully, she's one of the 'good' ones.

I just did what I had to do. People didn't deserve to go through that just because of their blood and the mad ideas of a megalomaniac. Let me return the compliment to you as well. I don't know your history as well as I probably should, but you are still willing to fight back. I appreciate it!

Oh! To answer your question about the classes that I overlooked in error. I am taking introduction to psychology/chemistry/creative writing/computers.

[Sam Winchester]

Professor Dumbledore has responded to my query. He states:

I cannot say what kind of magic the Founders used to create the Hat. That is something that has been lost in the mists of time rather unfortunately. I can tell you a little of how it works though. I do know that it uses Legilimancy to see into the mind of each student. How it chooses the House for each student is not quite as clear cut as might be expected. I've spoken to it about the subject on occasion, much to Armando's amusement.

It doesn't so much choose the House based on the student's current personality, though that does play a part, as it looks to what they aspire to be and to do and what qualities they may possess that need a challenge to be brought to the fore. It will also take the personal preference of the student into account though if it feels a student is suited to one House, it can and will ignore any request the student may have.

As to the Hat itself, well, it has its own personality and sentience and even its own magic in a small way. There are tales of previous Headmasters and Headmistresses attempting to influence its sorting of the student to little effect. It tends to keep its own counsel on most things. I've often thought, and this is only a personal opinion, that it possesses a little bit of each of the Founders' personalities.

It looks like they're showing up again. Or at least one of them is here, but not the one that looks like you. Honestly, I'm used to it by now-- I've gotten pretty good at avoiding my fans. So I don't get bothered by it, most of the time.

Yeah, it was definitely necessary to fight back against him. And you shouldn't give me too much credit, I tried to leave the fighting behind. And my reasons for getting back into it weren't all that pure. But I never would've joined the bad guys-- or Voldemort-- so that's something, I suppose.

That's a nice mix. I had to test out of general chemistry, and I still have the book I bought to study for it, if you want it.

[HESTIA]
So that's probably a no on creating something like it here, then?

It also kind of confirms what I suspected, that I probably would've ended up in Slytherin.

I hadn't noticed that anyone was here recently. I know there was that situation a while back with the vampire from the book but none of the actual characters. Do you think I should go say hullo?

But you came back. And you've continued to fight. That is what matters. That is definitely something. Voldemort and his Death Eaters need to be stopped. That'd be great! When do you want me to stop by and pick it up?

[SAM]

Probably. Or I could just poke my wand at a hat and we could see what happens.

Oh, Sam... I promise that I'll still consider you a friend even if you do end up in Slytherin.

I saw one on the network. I'll leave that one up to you; I'm going to keep my distance, personally.

I guess so. My war was pretty different from yours, and me being involved just made things more complicated a lot of the time. But anyway. I can meet you somewhere to study sometime and bring it along, if you want.

[HESTIA]
Ha, if you want. Though, don't poke your wand at it while it's on my head.

I don't think there's anything wrong with ambition on the face of it, just that any sort of power tends to end up being more trouble than it's worth. I've learned that the hard way. Which house were you in? Just out of curiosity.

Play on the side of caution and see what happens? Oh, that's not me at all. (Actually it is in some ways. But shh. Don't want that getting around.)

War is complicated. Especially when we bring the human element into it. Would Tuesday work? Meet at Timeless Tea downstairs and decide on a place from there?

[SAM]

Oh no Sam. I won't poke my wand at your head unless you deserve it. Or you ask. One of the two.

Ambition is a necessary thing, you just can't let it get to your head. And what you said. I was a Gryffindor. Hence me saying I'd be friends with you even if you were a Slytherin.

Ha. It's not really me either. Except sometimes it is.

Tuesday works for me. I'd be fine with studying in the tea shop, if they're okay with that, or in the cafe downstairs. Or we could go to the library, since we both like those. All of those work for me for studying.

[HESTIA]
I figured, I was mostly joking. I doubt I'll ask you to poke your wand at my head, but I guess you never know, right?

Yeah. The problem is when I want something badly enough that I do some questionable things to get it. Usually my intentions are good, but I've learned the hard way that the good intentions (or the ends) don't always justify the means. Sometimes they do, though.

Truthfully I think I could go anywhere but Hufflepuff. Which is not because I don't like Hufflepuff-- I'm pretty convinced my brother is one, and I've come to really admire him for it-- but I don't think I'm really good enough for that house. Too selfish, maybe.

Fools rush in where angels dare to tread?

I'm not sure of what their policy is. I don't see it being a problem, but just in case. And if it is, we head to the library. Oh! Did I tell you I got a kitten?

[SAM]

You just never know...

I think I know what you mean. I had a few Order missions that ended up with me questioning what we were doing.

At my Sorting, the Hat did debate for a while between Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, before deciding on Gryffindor. It is a shame that we can't recreate the Hat here, because now I'm curious as to where you would be placed.

Nah. People rush in where angels fear to tread. It's just what people do. Some people, anyway.

I have a friend that works there, I think it'd probably be okay. But I wouldn't want to get her into trouble either. And you didn't tell me that. What's it look like? What's its name?

[HESTIA]
I think that's just what war is like. You end up doing a lot of things you thought you'd never do, because when you're up against real evil, it's just not always possible to find a solid moral way to bring them down. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, so to speak.

Well, if you want to ask me questions to try and figure it out yourself, I can answer them. Or I can take one of those online quizzes. Or both, maybe. I just think, from what Dumbledore said about what we aspire to be and what qualities we'll use to get there-- I tend to set my mind on a goal and find any way, any at all if it's important enough, to get it done. And if I remember my sorting hat songs correctly, that plus a desire to prove myself and be something great, or important, would probably put me in Slytherin.

People like you and me?

I wouldn't want to get your friend in trouble either! His name is Pim. Do you remember a while ago when Azari had all those kittens up for adoption? I missed having a familiar around me and ended up having Pim adopt me.

[SAM]

Sometimes, you have to march into that gray area of morality and your conscious because there's no other way to succeed.

Oh Merlin, Sam; way to put me on the spot! Now I can't think of what to ask you that would help me figure it out! If you were in Slytherin, you'd prove the exception to the saying that only Dark wizards come out of Slytherin.

Exactly.

Oh, he's adorable. I do remember that, I'm glad you gave one of them a home.

[HESTIA]
Yeah, that's definitely true. But sometimes you do that and it turns out to be the wrong thing after all. Or at least, that's happened to me. You probably have better judgment there.

You don't have to ask me questions now. But I think that saying's already been proved wrong, hasn't it? Merlin himself was a Slytherin. And Slughorn, I liked him. Although I guess you might not have met him. I haven't either, I only read about him in the books. Snape, too, although he's more a shade of gray than the other two. I liked talking to him when I met him here, though.

Indeed.

He is. He's currently curled up on my bed pillow, nose twitching. It's really cute.

[SAM]

I don't know, Sam. I was only in the Order a few years. You've been doing this most of your life.

Meeting Merlin would be so fantastic. I didn't interact with Slughorn much. He never really officially entered the Order. More like an ally. Talking to him would be fantastic as well. It's been proven wrong yes. But most people will just remember that Voldemort came from that house along with a majority of his followers and the founder of the house himself. Ugh. That man. Even though I know he ended up being on the Order's side in the end, I still want to hex Snape in the face.

Sometime I'll have to meet him. I'm better with dogs, but I like cats, too.

[HESTIA]
I guess you don't really know til it happens to you. But I suspect you'd do just fine, all the same.

I think that's sad. And I think it might actually be a self-fulfilling problem. If people think Slytherins are all evil, then Slytherins will be branded that way, and they'll turn it to their advantage because that's what they do. Then it's not the house itself that turns them evil, but everyone else. Obviously I didn't get sorted at Hogwarts, but a lot of the cards have been stacked against me in a similar way. Though that's not something I entirely understood at the time I read the books.

You should! I have to admit to being a cat person, but that's because cats and witches go together like pumpkins and pastries. Dogs weren't allowed at Hogwarts either.

[SAM]

Thank you for having that faith in me.

That makes an unfortunate amount of sense. Then again, I will admit to having that bias and blinders on. Maybe we should re-Sort or Sort at an older age. Since we don't have a Honeyduke's here, I'll buy you some ice cream (or the sweet of your choice) instead for the depressing turn this conversation took.

Dogs aren't very witchy, it's true. And probably would be pretty problematic at the castle.

[HESTIA]
No problem.

I'm totally up for ice cream, although you don't have to buy. It's my fault the conversation went depressing, anyway. I go off on depressing tangents more than I probably should.

They're very friendly though! I wonder why cats were decided on as an animal...

[SAM]

Let me return it and say I know you'll be able to handle anything that is thrown at you.

When would you like to meet up? I'm going with this as a different occasion then studying together. We can finagle who's paying for who then?

They are, which is why I'm really fond of them. Do you mean decided on as a possibility to bring to the castle, or to go with witches in general? Because the former is probably because they can be kept indoors without going completely crazy.

[HESTIA]
I have so far, so you're probably right about that. And thanks.

A weekend, sometime? Easier to fit in ice cream time then. We could always just pay for each others', that'd even out, wouldn't it?

Both actually. Good answer though. It makes sense about the cats being chosen.

[SAM]

You are welcome. And of course I'm right! (Imagine me standing with my hands on my hips.)

A weekend sounds great! True, this. Since you've been in the city longer, I'll defer to your knowledge of ice cream parlours.

I don't know why they're popular with witches. I met a witch's familiar that was a dog once, and another that was a cat. But familiars in my world have human forms too. Or at least the ones I've met did.

[HESTIA]
Ha. I can imagine it.

I might actually defer that to either my brother or my girlfriend, since they're both way more into sweets than me. And at one point my brother was going to be a traveling food critic, but he hadn't gotten much farther than the places nearby. I think his notes are still around here somewhere.
