To make things clear:

This is mistletoe. Note the smooth edged leaves and distinctive white berries

mistletoe

This is holly. Prickly, glossy leaves and red berries.

Holly

I've been told that the Americas (particularly in the South) have a type of holly the leaves of which are smoother. However, the berries are still red.

Southern-Holly

Mistletoe and holly have their own distinctive and unique magical properties. They are not interchangeable.

You're welcome. Go about the rest of your day.

What? Did someone try to pass off Holly for mistletoe to you?

Not me, personally. It was at a shop that was selling 'kissing balls', and when I pointed out that the greenery being used wasn't mistletoe, she dismissively said, 'It's all the same thing'.

Yeah, I reckon it's more about what aesthetically looks best than authenticity, Perce.

It was a very pretty decoration, but don't pass it off as mistletoe. That's all I'm trying to say.

I’m confused. Why is this important?

Practically speaking, magic wands from my world are made from different types of wood, and each has its own attributes related to what sort of spells they're good for, what sort of magic its able to channel.

But there's also a Christmas tradition involving mistletoe, which doesn't apply to holly.

It would certainly change things up to deck the halls with boughs of mistletoe.

The party would turn into a veritable orgy.

Unless you're the sort that enjoys being kissed.

It's not merely a matter of being kissed but who's doing the kissing. That affects matters greatly for most people.

Naturally. I was going under the assumption that the party was fulled with friends who were comfortable with one another.

There's also a differences in the types and intensities of kisses.

Most Christmas parties I have attended have large numbers of someone's family members there.

One could always kiss on the cheek, yes. Particularly with family. But it ignores the historic shift for mistletoe to bring love instead of death. Also, I doubt most of us pluck a berry off for each kiss. Which then, there are still only so many berries.

What sort of magic are holly and mistletoe good for?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]percyweasley

Mistletoe wands are very rare, since being a vine it's difficult to find a piece wide and long enough to make one, but the wood is used in other applications, such as potion ingredients, tailsmans and other magical utensils. It's good for Defense Against the Dark Arts and Healing spells, but it's also associated with love, fertility.

Holly is is also rare. It's application is with protective spells, and is considered powerful (and in some circles, sacred).

This is fascinating. Is it all magic-users who can use the wands, or only the ones from your world? I have a sort of magic as well, but it's tied to my planet and the hard material resources from it.

Did you happen to get a wand from Ollivander's when we visited a version of Wizarding England, last summer in the airship?

I believe that there are people who are learning to cast my version of magic, so long as they have some magical ability to begin with.

Actually, yes. Both are. Not enough to kill a human, but precautions need to be made for pets.
