Network Post: Phèdre nó Delaunay
Greetings to you, people of Tumbleweed. I am Phèdre nó Delaunay de Montrève. I've been sequestered for some days now as I learn about this land and how to begin living in it. I feel more ready now to begin making your acquaintance.

I've consulted the maps and history summaries, and it appears my homeland of Terre d'Ange shares its geography and many features with "France," and the greater land of Europa with "Europe." Someday I may determine precisely when things became so different while still sharing somewhat that is considered historic here. For instance, your "Jesus Christ" appears to be Yeshua ben Yosef, whose spilled blood mingled with the Magdalene's tears in the womb of the Earth to beget Elua; Blessed Elua and his Companions have no counterpart that I've yet found. Your "Roman" Empire made conquests where our Tiberians were driven back. This place is on a continent I never knew existed, if it does exist in my world.

I'm already quite fond of the baths. I'm accustomed many buckets of heated water poured into the tub if one wants any warmth. There is much that is different, but the pleasure of a hot bath isn't lost to me.

My deepest thanks to Mesdames Tano and Wells for their continued assistance, especially upon my arrival. Your patience with me has gone far towards alleviating my bewilderment with this world. I will, of course, begin to pay Madame Wells for my accommodations and the use of her wardrobe as soon as I acquire local currency. Perhaps to start with, someone would purchase the coins I carry for their metal? They have no value here as currency, but I have some silver and gold.

I understand the troubles of adjusting to a new time. It has been some time since I've had to. It is easier to adjust to 2018 since I had already adjusted some time ago to the 2000s. What was the year when you arrived?

Our reckoning of time is different from the calendar here, but I estimate it was some centuries prior to now. May I have your name?

Ah. I suppose that is one of those things. [...] Sorry. I am Victor Frankenstein.

Indeed, it poses a difficulty to making comparisons. A pleasure to meet you, Monsieur Frankenstein. Did somewhat of this sort happen to you before to give you experience adjusting?

Yes. I was in Chicago previously. It was 1891 at the time for me before I showed up in 2014. So quite a lot of time had passed for me.

Is Chicago another country I haven't heard of before?

What have you marked as the greatest differences since your time?

It is a city in a state inside of this country. The state is Illinois.

There is more electricity, the telephones, medicine as a whole is quite changed.

Welcome to Tumbleweed. I'm Bill Weasley. I'm from England, but there are a couple people I know from France.

Well met, Monsieur Weasley. England as a nation appears to have no counterpart for me, but the landmass that it occupies is called Alba.

With some more study, I may be able to identify exactly why it is that we have no similar nation.

It's amazing how easily you can access information here. You don't have to maintain a personal library or borrow from others. I miss my own, of course.

Truly, it is! Hot water whenever we wish it, no chamberpots, and the soaps feel gentle to the skin.

I'm quite impressed with everything they've got going on over here. Even if it lacks the kind of rustic charm of home.

I suspect what we would consider ordinary is regarded as below charmingly "rustic" here.

Greetings, Phèdre! If I may call you Phèdre. My name is Rhy Maresh; you may call me Rhy.

I have found that gold converts well to this currency, although I've little reference for the exchange rate. However, I had to go outside the city to do it. I can show you the store that will buy gold, or I can buy it from you at the same rate and exchange it myself, if you prefer.

It's familiar, but that is quite all right, Rhy. I've sometimes struggled to drop formalities even when invited to do so; this is good practice.

I would prefer to go with you and see this store for myself, with your guidance. Thank you for offering your assistance.

Most people here seem to go with the familiar. It's taken some getting used to for me as well, since I was surrounded by royals and nobles at home. If you're more comfortable with formalities I am happy to use any title that you wish.

Of course, that would also be my preference, but I thought I would offer. I also found myself in need of exchanging some of my gold when I arrived.

As was I; I was raised to work among them, and I inherited a title myself. Perhaps we could invent a new title.

I appreciate it. When I've visited elsewhere before, I've changed coins for the local ones. I've heard coins are not the usual form of money any more.

Such habits are hard to break when you are raised with them, aren't they? I have a title of my own, but I would gladly invent a new one that suits our situation better. Did you have a particular idea?

They are not. There are some coins, but they are not very valuable. Paper currency is more valuable, but credit seems to be most valuable of all. My lover has done a much better job of figuring out how the credit and bank accounts work here; he could probably answer your questions, if you have them.

Indeed. Some of my earliest lessons were on proper forms of address. The one I've inherited is Comtesse. I think I'd need to learn more before I could invent an appropriate one.

How strange that paper should become more valuable than precious metals. Is your lover a financier by trade, or is he just very good with such things?
