I must confess that I don't know what to do with myself without a system to protect. I'm so used to going over budgets and filling in security holes and fixing breaches that I find my apartments a very cold place now. My nephew doesn't burst in to ask me questions. My advisers don't seek me out to ask opinions. I thought it would be freeing, but I'm not so sure.

I certainly can't blame a planet for wanting no part of a war. I had only just prevented one, at home. [...] How big are these planets? Do they hold multiple countries? It can't be any small task to lead multiple planets at once.

I am - was - the new king of a country called Arnes. It was one of four closely related worlds on my planet, and the royal families in each were in communication. Unfortunately, my coronation came about because of an assassination attempt on the part of the royal children from a neighboring country, Vesk, which took my mother, and my father, who survived, fell to a dark magic being called an oshoc which had been corrupting my people and destroying my city. I managed to prevent war with the Veskans, and we had only just managed to defeat the oshoc.

I suppose they could hold multiple countries, but with how vast the star systems are, it's easier to manage one planet, one star system. Most of our star systems have a few planets or moons that are habitable. Sometimes less than that. It's just been a long time since we've had to consider just our planet or moon.

That sounds horrifying. Is there something to look out for with this magic being? I hear that various beings from other worlds can show up here.

The scope of that is quite a bit larger than I'm used to. I can see how this place must seem small by comparison.

[...] Yes. Sorry. There are many good things to say about Arnes, but since you had mentioned your war, I felt I should explain mine. [...] I sincerely hope it will not appear here. But [...] it would take the form of normal people, behaving strangely, with black eyes.

Small sounds like I think poorly of this place. It's different, to be sure, and there are far less sentient species here, but not having to deal with problems on such a massive scale is sort of a relief.

All black or just the iris?

That's not really how I meant it. Only that there are many levels on which to think of worlds, aren't there? I thought I had a general idea of the potential scope of them, just from knowing about three others connected to mine. But I had not expected there to be so many others, and I certainly hadn't thought about other planets. [...] Being glad to worry only about smaller problems is a sentiment I truly understand, however.

All black. [...] Not to be confused with the Antari of my world, who are quite powerful magicians, and are born with one fully black eye and one eye of a different color, such as blue or green.
