For the same reason that water does not affect your internal organs and neural pathways. A complex system of insulating hardware made from organic material that protects my electrical system.

I have been told that I must eventually procure an occupation. I am open to all possibilities.

So if you get cut, would you short circuit instead of bleed? Is that how that works?

I don't think you need a job on the ship.

My circulatory system is composed of a white liquid latex solution that lubricates my interior systems. If you cut me, I will bleed.

It never hurts to start thinking early about long term career options.

That sounds so gross. But good So what do we do if you get damaged?

If we get back to Tumbleweed you'll need to find a job.

It is no more disgusting than blood and it is less likely to stain. A cut will not do significant damage to my systems. I am able to repair most of my own injuries. However, should I be severely damaged in a way that hinders my cognitive functioning, then I suppose you will have to reassemble me, if the injury is extreme, or turn me over to one of the many technologically predisposed individuals on the ship. There appears to be an extensive list of people who believe they are competent enough to work through my programming.

But don't worry. I am very resilient. I do not foresee this as being a problem.

Yes. A job. To earn wages. Do you have any suggestions for me?

If they want to Do you weigh the same as a human? If we get into a big fight like in Atlantis and you get knocked out, can you be carried?

I'm not worried.

What skills do you have?

I am not heavy. I weigh about the same as a human of my size. 86.2 kg, to be precise. I am unfamiliar with your strength, but I am certain that someone on this ship could carry me. But I do not intend to be so severely damaged.

That is a relief.

I can do almost anything that is asked of me.

I'm stronger than I look. No one ever intends to get hurt, but it still happens.

Why would you be relieved about that?

That's not a skill. What did you do on the ship you were on?

It is not in my nature to cause worry. If you were worried, I would have to perform a self diagnostic check for abnormalities in my behavior.

I did everything. The crew spent two years in hyper sleep. My duties involved maintenance, operations, environmental control, custodial work, data analysis, research, monitoring of crew vitals, mapping of spatial anomalies, and cross checking all relayed information with the ship's computer. In my free time I watched films.

I'm pretty sure others are worried about you.

Maybe you can work at a movie theater then. You can run the concessions, clean up, and run the projector or whatever.

They shouldn't be.

That is a very logical deduction on your part. I will file away this response in my memory banks for when we return to Tumbleweed. Although I do not understand the relevance of providing me with a paycheck, I am curious as to how I would spend the financial rewards. I have never bought anything in my existence. What do you spend your money on?

"Shouldn't" is a dumb thing to say. No one's been given any reason to trust you. I don't even trust you, but robots don't worry me. You need to earn their trust before they "shouldn't" be worried about you.

Clothes, food, survival supplies. Stuff like that. Books.

I apologize if I have offended you. But just as I have given no one reason to trust me, I have given no one reason to distrust me either. I cannot change an individual's preconceived notions or prior experience with synthetic lifeforms, just as no one can change my opinion on my previous interactions with humans. It is unfortunate if someone has had problems with a malfunctioning Artificial Intelligence. But I am a very state-of-the-art model. I do not anticipate malfunctioning in the ways I have heard from others on this ship.

Wise choices. Music would also be a worthy purchase.

You didn't offend me. And that's just how people are. Trust isn't something that happens overnight usually, and when it comes to something like you that's programmed to be a certain way, we don't know if you might suddenly mess up, and we don't know what the people who made you really wanted you to go. You're unpredictable, more than a human would be. So yeah, some people are going to have trust issues for a while.

I used to buy music, but it's not something you can easily take with you if you have to leave suddenly so I just listen to the radio in Tumbleweed.

I disagree. I am neither more nor less predictable than any human. I was merely designed to function with the same idiosyncratic responses as humans. But I accept that without my user manual, there might be some suspicion as to my claims.

If you invest in an instrument then you can take music with you everywhere.

You're not human, so how would you know how predictable you are in comparison to us? You don't even know us. You're not from our time, or place. No one you know or studied is here.

I never took lessons.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Because my randomized predictability runs on an automated feedback loop. Eventually it repeats.

Lessons are unnecessary. Only practice and patience.

Really?

I don't want to take music with me everywhere. If I'm being hunted through the woods by an alien, why let it know where I am? That's stupid.

Yeah. But not the kind I'm talking about. Why?

Not to my knowledge.

Alien lifeforms interest me. What kind do you have here?

[info]likeamayfly

Why do they interest you? Is it there biology, their history, their cultures? Things like that.

[info]weylandtype

Biology, mostly. But as an artificial life form I find all aspects of living, breathing, sentient species intriguing, because they often vary considerably from myself. Androids have no culture, for example.

Tell me about these aliens in the woods?
