I'm stronger than I look. No one ever intends to get hurt, but it still happens.

Why would you be relieved about that?

That's not a skill. What did you do on the ship you were on?

It is not in my nature to cause worry. If you were worried, I would have to perform a self diagnostic check for abnormalities in my behavior.

I did everything. The crew spent two years in hyper sleep. My duties involved maintenance, operations, environmental control, custodial work, data analysis, research, monitoring of crew vitals, mapping of spatial anomalies, and cross checking all relayed information with the ship's computer. In my free time I watched films.

I'm pretty sure others are worried about you.

Maybe you can work at a movie theater then. You can run the concessions, clean up, and run the projector or whatever.

They shouldn't be.

That is a very logical deduction on your part. I will file away this response in my memory banks for when we return to Tumbleweed. Although I do not understand the relevance of providing me with a paycheck, I am curious as to how I would spend the financial rewards. I have never bought anything in my existence. What do you spend your money on?

"Shouldn't" is a dumb thing to say. No one's been given any reason to trust you. I don't even trust you, but robots don't worry me. You need to earn their trust before they "shouldn't" be worried about you.

Clothes, food, survival supplies. Stuff like that. Books.

I apologize if I have offended you. But just as I have given no one reason to trust me, I have given no one reason to distrust me either. I cannot change an individual's preconceived notions or prior experience with synthetic lifeforms, just as no one can change my opinion on my previous interactions with humans. It is unfortunate if someone has had problems with a malfunctioning Artificial Intelligence. But I am a very state-of-the-art model. I do not anticipate malfunctioning in the ways I have heard from others on this ship.

Wise choices. Music would also be a worthy purchase.

You didn't offend me. And that's just how people are. Trust isn't something that happens overnight usually, and when it comes to something like you that's programmed to be a certain way, we don't know if you might suddenly mess up, and we don't know what the people who made you really wanted you to go. You're unpredictable, more than a human would be. So yeah, some people are going to have trust issues for a while.

I used to buy music, but it's not something you can easily take with you if you have to leave suddenly so I just listen to the radio in Tumbleweed.

I disagree. I am neither more nor less predictable than any human. I was merely designed to function with the same idiosyncratic responses as humans. But I accept that without my user manual, there might be some suspicion as to my claims.

If you invest in an instrument then you can take music with you everywhere.

You're not human, so how would you know how predictable you are in comparison to us? You don't even know us. You're not from our time, or place. No one you know or studied is here.

I never took lessons.

Because my randomized predictability runs on an automated feedback loop. Eventually it repeats.

Lessons are unnecessary. Only practice and patience.

Really?

I don't want to take music with me everywhere. If I'm being hunted through the woods by an alien, why let it know where I am? That's stupid.

Are there aliens here?

Do you have one here?

Yeah. But not the kind I'm talking about. Why?

Not to my knowledge.

Alien lifeforms interest me. What kind do you have here?

[info]likeamayfly

Why do they interest you? Is it there biology, their history, their cultures? Things like that.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Biology, mostly. But as an artificial life form I find all aspects of living, breathing, sentient species intriguing, because they often vary considerably from myself. Androids have no culture, for example.

Tell me about these aliens in the woods?

Well some of them are mostly humanoid. But I'll leave it to them to tell you about themselves.

[...] They wiped out almost all of the human life, on Earth, where I'm from. The look like people, but they're not.

I am sorry for your loss.

My last encounter with an alien lifeform was also an uncomfortable experience. They looked like humans, only much larger. They were actually a bit of a disappointment.

Uncomfortable experience? They used some kind of EMP and knocked out the power around the whole freaking world. They caused huge tidal waves that flooded all of the coastal cities. All of them. They sent a plague that killed most people. I watched my mom die over several days. Her blood literally exploded out of her, trying to infect anyone who was nearby. My dad had to bury her in the back yard. And then when we went to a camp where the military was supposed to come and help us, they took my little brother and all the other little kids and then they killed everyone. I only made it out because I was looking for someone else that was supposed to be in there. I watched while they gunned down my dad fifty feet away from my face.

It was a lot more than an uncomfortable experience.

This is probably part of why people don't trust you, you know. Because you don't get it. At all.

I am incapable of feeling an emotional response to your loss. I apologize for seeming insensitive. It was not my intention to trivialize your pain. I am much more adept at expressing emotion in face-to-face communication. You are correct. Your experience is incomparable to my own. And I hope that you never have to relive such tragedy again. Perhaps one day I will have a better understanding of these things.
