It could be wrong though. or you could lie

No, McDonalds was a successful marketing scheme too.

Would you like to verify yourself?

Weyland's marketing campaign of synthetic lifeforms was one of the most successful consumer strategies of the 21st century. He was TIME's Person of the Year in 2024 for his developments in the field of cyber genetics. He was also an accomplished TED Talk presenter. Perhaps his motivational speeches are available online somewhere.

Yes.

I haven't heard of him. When we get back to Tumbleweed, we'll be in 2018 if it's the same year as when we left.

Are you familiar with cybernetics?

2018 is before my time. That would be the time of another David series. Sixth Generation Weyland Type.

Yes, somewhat.

How far before?

Since when have you learned cybernetics with enough knowledge to correctly identify the maintenance of a synthetic?

I didn't say that Professor.

In reading this conversation that is what you are implying.

I understand the trepidation that you have with robots but there is no need for lying.

An omission of the truth or exaggerating what you are capable of doing in order to benefit yourself are examples of lies.

We may need to rework the Ethics class.

I have friends who make up for the knowledge I lack who I was going to ask to verify with me that what he's saying is true once he said more. You shouldn't make assumptions.

You should state all of your intentions in the first place. Going about it in the way that you are is dangerous and unwelcoming.

The fact that he looks like one of them men you consider to be your father is messing with your logical process.

A man named Erik Lehnsherr. He also went by Magneto. A rather good friend of mine who was married to another here and father to two girls.

You didn't have to mention that. I don't want to talk about it.

If that is a compliment then I will thank you on behalf of my father.

Of course not! But if you need someone to take a look and make sure you're functioning properly, I have a lot of experience. I work with droids in my world. Some of them are nothing more than robots performing a specific function, but most of them are AI. But none of them are this life-like.

Android. But I prefer synthetic.

[...]

I appreciate everyone's concern, but I am 99.3% certain that I am functioning properly and within factory guidelines. I will, however, accept your offer in the future should my certainty drop below 84%.

[...]

Yes, I was created to imitate humans in every manner imaginable. I can express a vast range of emotions. All of these compliments. It is fortunate that I am incapable of feeling pride.

Synthetic is it then. We just call them droids in my world.

Sure, let me know! I'm always willing to help out.

Whoa, they don't let you feel pride? That's some bantha fodder right there.

I can express pride. Feeling an emotion, however, is a human trait.

Not just human. There's other sentient species who can feel emotion. You'll probably meet some of them here. There's a Twi'lek and a Togruta around. If you're sentient and have your own intelligence, then I think you should be able to feel emotions.

Your comments reference an area of philosophy that was widely debated in both the 20th and 21st centuries. The crux of the argument lies in the definition of the terminology. A computer is a database of knowledge. As such, it is intelligent. You can tell a computer that it is a computer and it will have an awareness of its self. Sentience, however, is the ability to perceive, feel, and experience subjectively. Can a computer be subjective if it has been programmed by someone else? It has the ability to think and reason, but does that mean it has the ability to feel?

I apologize for my lackadaisical phrasing. I should say feeling emotions is a trait of the living.
