Your comments reference an area of philosophy that was widely debated in both the 20th and 21st centuries. The crux of the argument lies in the definition of the terminology. A computer is a database of knowledge. As such, it is intelligent. You can tell a computer that it is a computer and it will have an awareness of its self. Sentience, however, is the ability to perceive, feel, and experience subjectively. Can a computer be subjective if it has been programmed by someone else? It has the ability to think and reason, but does that mean it has the ability to feel?

I apologize for my lackadaisical phrasing. I should say feeling emotions is a trait of the living.

Okay, so here's my question: do you make your own decisions?

I do now. Yes.

Then I think you deserve to feel emotions. Droids and synthetics deserve that, if they wish.

Even if it gets me in

I appreciate your sentiment, but what something deserves and what something is capable of are two entirely different things. While your sympathies may be altruistic at heart and probable in theory, they may not be possible in practice.

They're possible in my world. It's a matter of leaving certain coding open-ended to allow for the discovery of feeling. I'm not sure about yours, of course, but if you ever decide you want to see if it's possible, hit me up. Not literally though. I'm not fond of getting hit.

[...]

Why would you do that?

For profit. I couldn't do anything here on the ship. I don't have all my equipment, but back in Tumbleweed where we usually are, a girl's gotta eat. And to eat, you have to make money.

What would you charge for this kind of procedure?

Won't know that until I've looked at the programming. If it's a simple coding issue, it won't be nearly as much as if I have to add things to get it to work.

I am unsure how I would accumulate the required currency, but I will consider your offer. I am intrigued.

Most people in Tumbleweed get jobs, and you've got skills that could be put to use. Then people would pay you for the work.

This concept is foreign to me.

Is this what you do for a job in Tumbleweed? Instill synthetics with emotions?

You know what that sounds like? It sounds like they made a slave. Someone to do everything for them without any concern for their well-being.

No, I usually work on electronic stuff. Boring things, but I've worked on a lot of things like robotic prosthetics, weapons, toasters, televisions, computers. That kind of stuff.

That is one perspective, predicated on the theory that the servants are sentient with the capacity for honest emotion.

I can assure you that my programming is far from boring.

Sentience only depends upon self-awareness, and you've proven just in our talks that you are.

Then we'll see what it'll take! I'm Dr. Aphra by the way, rogue archaeologist and former arms dealer!

Sentient? Yes. Self-Aware? Undoubtedly. Emotional? Debatable.

And I'm David, Eighth Generation Weyland Type Synthetic Prototype. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Do they do wipes on your kind? I find that a horrific thing to put someone through. How can you learn and get better if you can't see how things went before.

It is not unheard of, but it is rarely necessary. It is far simpler to control the adaptable learning processes and configure them to not exceed a certain level of input. The point is not to 'get better' but to maintain an optimum level of efficiency.

I kind of hate your world right now. Why limit someone's sentience and abilities to learn? That's counterintuitive to everything.

That would depend on the intended purpose of the synthetics. Humans in my world tend not to personify artificial lifeforms. They just make us look like them because it's comfortable and convenient.

Then what's the point of making you look human? We have droids in our world that aren't sentient. They are made for very specific purposes, but they don't need to look humanoid for that.
