What a curious ship. And already I have heard tales that more curious things can be hunted down. I would readily like to hear them. And a drink to all who do.

My name is Alucard Emery of Arnes. I have been a pirate, a privateer, a champion of the Element Games (still reigning), to name a few titles. And on foreign waters, I am in need of new friends.

A pirate! I was a pirate once, in a play.

What are the Element Games? They sound fascinating.

They are very fun to play.

They're a magical competition wherein 12 magicians apiece from the three empires face each other in multiple rounds. They get more grueling but more open to creativity as they go on. In the last bout, it's a three person free for all. There's also balls, celebrations, and enough festivities some people don't even come for the games.

They are! And there was lots of singing.

Brilliant! Sounds quite a lot like the Triwizard Tournament. I never competed, but my son did. Is your magic more the elemental sort, then?

Oh, and I'm James. James Potter.

That only makes it better. Everyone knows pirates sing.

Most of the magic in our corner of the worlds is elemental, yes. That said, I've seen no shortage of curious and curiouser ways of using that magic.

Pleasure to meet you, James. What is your magic like?

I'm so glad to hear that. Singing pirates were my favorite thing.

Magic is so varied here, it's very interesting. I thought I had learned most everything there was to know. Mine is [...] well, it's an energy that can do most anything if I practice at it. I'm particularly good at transfiguration, charms, and dueling.

Just know, in the end, nearly every song can be made about the sea and sex.

Most anything. That teases the imagination. What has been gotten up with magic and its varied forms here? I can certainly say I'm in.

Well, of course. But they can get more creative than that, too.

People keep trying to make a group of magical folk, but not much comes of it. There was a survey that went up on the network a bit ago, though, you might find some of the answers to your questions there.

Certainly. But with twenty drunk sailors, it's how you swear about it that's creative.

Well, formal, informal, or only friends, I'm curious to learn more. It is my first time in another world. It's like letting a book lover loose in a library. I like those too. And thank you, I'll look into that.

Ah, I see. The pirates in the play were [...] innocent, I suppose, is the best word for it. And rather gullible.

I'm more than willing to talk about magic, or demonstrate. I love turning things into other things, that's the flashiest sort of demonstrations I've got.

Or we could have a duel. Never dueled against elemental magic, actually. Sounds like it could be interesting. But - not here, or we'll get thrown in the brig.

A fantastical invention but fun nonetheless. The gullible do not stay pirates long.

With so much here, I can hardly resist. That sounds fantastic.

It may be good to get a better eye for each other's magic before dueling. It'll be easier to avoid injuring each other. Which brig or no, that's not what fighting with friends is about.

Mine did, surprisingly. Mainly by being tricked into servitude to the pirates.

Of course! I like showing off. Please do feel free to show off as well.

Yes, agreed. I don't have any interest in hurting you either, and would not use any spells that would cause you real harm anyway.

That sounds plausible.

There's always fun to be had. I'll make it something good.

In the Essen Tasch, we wear armor made of easily broken plates. You score points by breaking the plates. It's one way to do it.

It was a silly play, but a fun one. I still had the script back in Tumbleweed, but it didn't come on the boat with me. If you'd like to read it, remind me when we get back.

Oh, I always manage to have fun. I'm not worried about that.

That's brilliant. Never heard of such a thing. Usually duels in my world are decided by who lands the most (relatively harmless) spells or hexes.

I can hardly resist a good book.

All the taverns aboard the ship look so civilized.

Having something in particular to demonstrate the skill in landing the blows is something I like. It also makes it clear whether something landed or not.

I'm not much for books, myself. Gotta have a good reason to pick one up.

Yeah? What kinds of taverns are you used to?

It does make sense. It's just usually very obvious when my spells land, so there hasn't been much need.

I like to multitask. And there's always something to take away from a book.

All of them, from the worst where you can barely swallow the grog and fight over tables to the expensive ones where the highest classes think they are roughing it so hard. Of course, toying with them there can be the fun of those ones. Honestly, I prefer ones anywhere in the middle. Good drinks, lots of company, card games, and if a fight breaks out outside, so it does.

What in particular stands out about them?

You sound like my friend Remus.

Ah, yeah. I'm fairly used to pubs, where you get a good drink and a good meal in good company. These are a fair amount fancier than that, and the pubs can certainly get rowdy. So I think we're probably thinking of something similar.

Depends on the spell. If a stunner lands, for instance, the person's knocked out. If it's a bat bogey hex, they'll have bats flying out of their nose.

I take that as a compliment.

London has enough of them you can choose what fits your fancy for the evening. I do hope Texas has a few.

That sounds like it gets interesting quite quickly. Or boring, if you're the one knocked out.

Yeah, he's cool I guess.

It does. More than it used to. Unless you're into cowboys, my bet is you'll like the Roadhouse best.

It wouldn't be much fun if anyone made it that easy to knock them out.

What do you do when there's nothing to do? Or you're stuck doing something boring?

Cow... boys?

Awfully convenient in battle though.

I bother people until they do something fun with me. Or whine at them when they won't.

Yeah, you know, with the hats and the boots?

Indeed. Most people I've dueled have put up a good fight, though.

And what is the rest of them?

Well otherwise it wouldn't really be worthy of the name duel.

I can make my own fun, but it's better with company. Luckily I have friends that think the same way.

People? They're people in hats and boots. I think they ride horses. And there's something to do with cows, but I dunno where that factors in exactly. It's a muggle thing.

Naturally.

Oh I agree. Company makes it better, wine, food, fighting pirates.

Many people wear hats and boots and ride horses. I've done all three, even at the same time. But cows have not figured into it.

Add mischief to that list, and I'm on board.

Yeah, it's some kind of muggle style. I don't entirely understand it.
