I'm guessing the Tolkien books are in the library, although there may not be enough copies for everyone. I have digital copies on my computer - the trilogy and also The Hobbit - if anyone would like to read them on their tablet. Just let me know.

I was also thinking we should screen the movies, if we have them, even though there might be inaccuracies (if we're visiting the book world). Because it might be hard for new readers to get through 3-4 books in the two days before we hit the port.

I would not mind rereading them. I prefer physical books, but not being new to the series, I can cede those copies to people new to the series.

I might be wrong, there might be enough copies to go around. Maybe they've had some hidden that they were saving for this stop. You could check the library if you're interested, and take a digital copy if you can't find a physical book.

I do like physical books, too. I just also like having a stash of my favorite books on my computer, because I haven't always been able to carry books, or had access to them.

The library should have at least fifty copies if they've prepared well for it. I will check. There's something about the tangible experience that makes it something different.

Books are a few of the things I usually always take with me, wherever it is. Admittedly, I did not get to pack for this trip. So your argument has merit.

I mean, you don't have to finish ALL of them before we port. With the digital copies, it's not hard to take them with you and read wherever you end up having a quiet moment. Or coming back to the ship and reading more at night.

How inaccurate would you say these movies are?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]bornunder

It really depends on what version of the world we're heading to. Many of the differences between the books and movies, in my world, were more to do with characters and plot than the world itself. And it's possible we're headed for the movie version rather than the book one. It's hard to say when there are infinite universe possibilities.

A good point, I suppose. If I understand you correctly, then, we're not likely to cause a cultural incident if we learn said culture through one source only if this version of the world coincides with the ones typically found in fiction.

Unfortunately, I don't know that they do. But if you have a program on your tablet that reads things aloud for you, it could probably do that for my digital copies of the books. The movies would definitely take less time and be a more dramatic reading, though.

If you have to only have one book, that's a good one to have. But six times in a month is still a lot of times to read it. Have you read the trilogy?
