	Depends on the kind of resolution we want, 2D vs 3D, but honestly it doesn't have to be TOO close. Like... 15? m to get a facial image good enough to get past a facial rec scanner. If we're going to a port, some day (which I've been told we will), then that speaks to land somewhere. If we were in the middle of one of earth's oceans, it could look much the same.

Why wouldn't you? They'd have remarkable systems that could work underwater, probably better sonar than anything we have. There is SO MANY AWESOME THINGS you could do. Robot whale songs.
