______________

Steve didn't like being called a wuss by Bucky. All his life he was brave, even to the point that it was stupid. But something about Peggy Carter gave him chills. At one point in time he thought maybe he loved her, but time had passed and things had changed. She had gotten married and grew old.

But that wasn't the case here. She was nearly from the same point in time as him. He didn't know what to do with himself, coming to terms with the fact that he'd never see her again, only to... see her again.

He went to the base and passed by the guards, as he worked with them. He went to Peggy's quarantine room and knocked on the glass, grinning stupidly and alerting her to his presence.

Peggy could sense the awkwardness coming off Steve. It was endearing, she'd missed it. There was something endearing about it. "Steve," she said softly. "It's been more than seventy years for you. I would be surprised if I hadn't died during that time. I would have been well into my 90s which is quite old," she replied pragmatically. While her family did tend to live longer no one lived forever. "I'm glad I had a good life but I'm happy not knowing what will happen," she told him truthfully.

Peggy did blink at the information about James. She supposed that explained his hesitancy to actually talk to her about the world that he came from made a lot of sense. She had to admit she was curious about learning more about it though.

"That must have been an odd experience when you discovered that. Sometimes having a relationship with your best friend can be good, but I can also see why it would be awkward," she agreed. "He seems like a nice kid though if he's yours that's not surprising. Any other alternatives I should be aware of?" she asked curiously.

Steve nodded, "Right. No spoilers, as they say. I won't ... I won't tell you anything else." He wouldn't want to know either, so he didn't blame her. He felt a little bad about telling her she got married.

"He's a good kid. Calls me dad. It's a little strange. Because he's mine but... not really?" Steve still wasn't sure how he felt about James in his life.

"There are two Buckys," He blurted out. Then backpedaled. "He survived the same way I did, almost. He was captured by HYDRA and had a version of the serum in him. He was frozen on and off... One is from around the same time I came from, the other had about five or six years past that."

"Hey, if I learn something it won't be the end of the world. With pretty much all of you coming from my future it will happen in one way or another," she reassured him. There was no way she could remain completely oblivious in this situation, she just wanted to focus on the here and now instead of what was and what will be.

"That would be strange but good too that he does see you as a father figure even if you're not his Steve. Everyone needs a parental figure, here I imagine more so than even back home. It can't be easy," she mused.

"I think I've talked to one of them. Maybe both? I don't know. I've certainly talked to one and a Sam from another world?" she frowned trying to think of who she had talked to over the two days she was locked up. "It's odd to think that there are so many different versions of people though. I never put much stock in the different world theories but I suppose it must be true."

Steve sighed. "Well, hopefully you don't learn anything too upsetting to you." He wasn't sure what that could be, but he also didn't know much about Peggy past the time that he died. He knew she formed SHIELD, and that she had a niece here named Sharon. He'd let her find that part out on her own.

"Different world theories are truth now, Peggy," he said with a chuckle. As they walked past a diner, Steve nudged her, "Are you hungry? Dinner's on me."

"I'm sure I won't. You're all wonderful after all," she said with a smile. "I look forward to getting to know everyone though," she told him truthfully. What happened happened but she wanted to focus on her life here and now and not what was and what might be. That never ended well.

"So it seems and dinner sounds good. Thank you, Steve," she said with a smile.

"Dinner it is, then." Steve smiled and lead Peggy into the diner, sitting across from her. He continued to smile.

"It's so good to see you."

"It is wonderful to see you too," Peggy said with a smile following Steve in. She as just grateful to get this second chance.
