STATUS: thread, incomplete

______________

Steve didn't like being called a wuss by Bucky. All his life he was brave, even to the point that it was stupid. But something about Peggy Carter gave him chills. At one point in time he thought maybe he loved her, but time had passed and things had changed. She had gotten married and grew old.

But that wasn't the case here. She was nearly from the same point in time as him. He didn't know what to do with himself, coming to terms with the fact that he'd never see her again, only to... see her again.

He went to the base and passed by the guards, as he worked with them. He went to Peggy's quarantine room and knocked on the glass, grinning stupidly and alerting her to his presence.

Peggy had been flicking through one of the books that she had been provided with while she was in Quarantine. She hadn't heard of it before but it wasn't bad. Not something she normally would have picked up though if she had a choice. There was so much to learn about this place and all the quirks. She'd come to terms that Steve and Bucky were here as well as some alternatives which was interesting.

She supposed she would wrap her head around it in time though.

Everyone thankfully seemed nice and welcoming and she was looking forward to getting to know people better. She knew she was going to be released sometime today but didn't know when. Peggy supposed it would be when Steve turned up.

Hearing a knock on the window she looked up and saw him standing them with a grin on his face. She couldn't help but smile brightly back at him. "Steve!" she exclaimed happily waving to him. Knowing he was here and actually seeing him were too different things. She never thought it would be possible but here they were.

There she was, young and red-lipped, just like he remembered her. She was still beautiful in her old age, but the curls in her dark hair reminded him of when he first met her. She believed in him. She wanted to protect him.

The door unlocked on it's own, and Steve gently pushed down on the handle to open it. "You ready to go, Ms. Carter?" He smiled again, using a formal greeting as a joke.

He remembered what Bucky said. It was just Peggy. She wasn't going to shoot him. Again.

Peggy felt her heart stop momentarily. Again. She had to remind herself that she wasn't in fact dreaming and this was actually real. "Always Captain," she said with a smile back returning her usual greeting to his Ms Carter. It was safe and familiar and she liked that.

It made things easier.

"Shall we?" she asked pausing for a moment before moving in to hug him. "You have no idea how good it is to see you again, Steve. Thank you for coming to get me. I have a feeling we have a lot to talk about?" she asked trying not to feel too awkward.

"I'm not the Captain anymore, Peg, but we'll get to that later," he replied candidly. She moved into hug him and he reached down to pull her in close. The last time she hugged him, she was too frail to stand and had to do it from her bed.

He held his arm out for her to link with his and started walking out of the containment center. "I'll walk you to the Avengers house. I don't know where you'll be staying but that's where I call home. And yeah, we have a lot to talk about."

Peggy wondered about that, she couldn't imagine him giving it up but she supposed there was a lot she didn't know. She'd got some of the story from Sam Wilson but she knew that there was still a lot that she didn't know. The fact that she knew Steve survived as did Bucky by the look of it though, was something. The hug felt good. She'd missed it but she didn't let them stay connected for too long.

She didn't want to assume anything or make things awkward.

"I can imagine. I suppose I shall figure out where I will be living soon enough. A conversation sounds good though, I have a feeling it will be a pretty involved discussion. I know I've learned a bit over the past couple of days but there's still so many things I know I need to learn. Who do you live with?" she asked curiously.

The weather was surprisingly warm for December, being in Texas and all. Steve didn't even have a jacket. He escorted Peggy out the door and began walking towards the Avengers' house. He didn't bring his bike because talking while a motor is running doesn't exactly work out.

"I live with the other Aveng-- oh. You don't know them. Sam, Wanda, Thor, Bucky, Natasha, Clint, and a bunch of aliens." The last part was said dryly, as if it wouldn't be easily believed. "Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, made a team of people with extraordinary skills. He called them the Avengers. What's left of them here are living together," he explained. "Natasha and Clint used to be SHIELD agents. Do you know anything about SHIELD yet? I know you started it with Howard."

Had Sam mentioned the Avengers? She honestly couldn't remember. She didn't think he had though but there had been so much information to take in over the past couple of days she truly didn't know for sure. She nodded though as she listened to him. "That's an interesting bunch. I've talked to a couple of them since I've arrived though. They seem quite nice," she nodded. "I do, I was on my way to Washington to form it when I arrived here. Others have mentioned it though to me since then so I know it survived into the future," she explained.

It was still so odd to think about but she supposed it wasn't boring. She wouldn't have dealt anywhere near as well as she could have.

"They're all great." He still had a complicated relationship with Howard's son, so he thought best not to address that. Especially since neither of them were here. What Peggy didn't know wouldn't hurt her.

"You got married. I don't know his name... But you had a good, long life." Had? Shit, did he just spill the beans about her being dead? She's a smart woman, she might catch on. Change the subject, Steve!

"I saw you spoke to James. He's the kid? He's ... my son. From another timeline, in which Natasha and I have him. Which is weird, since Natasha's my best friend."

Peggy could sense the awkwardness coming off Steve. It was endearing, she'd missed it. There was something endearing about it. "Steve," she said softly. "It's been more than seventy years for you. I would be surprised if I hadn't died during that time. I would have been well into my 90s which is quite old," she replied pragmatically. While her family did tend to live longer no one lived forever. "I'm glad I had a good life but I'm happy not knowing what will happen," she told him truthfully.

Peggy did blink at the information about James. She supposed that explained his hesitancy to actually talk to her about the world that he came from made a lot of sense. She had to admit she was curious about learning more about it though.

"That must have been an odd experience when you discovered that. Sometimes having a relationship with your best friend can be good, but I can also see why it would be awkward," she agreed. "He seems like a nice kid though if he's yours that's not surprising. Any other alternatives I should be aware of?" she asked curiously.

Steve nodded, "Right. No spoilers, as they say. I won't ... I won't tell you anything else." He wouldn't want to know either, so he didn't blame her. He felt a little bad about telling her she got married.

"He's a good kid. Calls me dad. It's a little strange. Because he's mine but... not really?" Steve still wasn't sure how he felt about James in his life.

"There are two Buckys," He blurted out. Then backpedaled. "He survived the same way I did, almost. He was captured by HYDRA and had a version of the serum in him. He was frozen on and off... One is from around the same time I came from, the other had about five or six years past that."

"Hey, if I learn something it won't be the end of the world. With pretty much all of you coming from my future it will happen in one way or another," she reassured him. There was no way she could remain completely oblivious in this situation, she just wanted to focus on the here and now instead of what was and what will be.

"That would be strange but good too that he does see you as a father figure even if you're not his Steve. Everyone needs a parental figure, here I imagine more so than even back home. It can't be easy," she mused.

"I think I've talked to one of them. Maybe both? I don't know. I've certainly talked to one and a Sam from another world?" she frowned trying to think of who she had talked to over the two days she was locked up. "It's odd to think that there are so many different versions of people though. I never put much stock in the different world theories but I suppose it must be true."

Steve sighed. "Well, hopefully you don't learn anything too upsetting to you." He wasn't sure what that could be, but he also didn't know much about Peggy past the time that he died. He knew she formed SHIELD, and that she had a niece here named Sharon. He'd let her find that part out on her own.

"Different world theories are truth now, Peggy," he said with a chuckle. As they walked past a diner, Steve nudged her, "Are you hungry? Dinner's on me."

"I'm sure I won't. You're all wonderful after all," she said with a smile. "I look forward to getting to know everyone though," she told him truthfully. What happened happened but she wanted to focus on her life here and now and not what was and what might be. That never ended well.

"So it seems and dinner sounds good. Thank you, Steve," she said with a smile.

"Dinner it is, then." Steve smiled and lead Peggy into the diner, sitting across from her. He continued to smile.

"It's so good to see you."

"It is wonderful to see you too," Peggy said with a smile following Steve in. She as just grateful to get this second chance.
