A bit of family history |
[Aug. 10th, 2008|05:05 pm] |
Who: Marcus Belby and Sally Fawcett What: Marcus spills the beans to Sally When: Sunday 10 August, evening Where: Moza Curry on Trafalgar Why: Sally's the only one who won't pull a wand when he tells her -- he hopes
After spending several futile hours in the lab, Marcus finally decided that what he needed was to get the hell out of his flat, even if it was ridiculously early. He wandered the Greenwich Market, scuffing his shoes on the ground and mentally rehearsing how he might explain to his friend that his life had been a lie, until eventually the fading light drove him to the restaurant.
When Sally arrived, Marcus sat nursing a beer, an untouched basket of peshwari naan sitting on the table in front of him. |

Mike,
If you have some time I have a request for assistance that I hope you can provide. It's a very personal matter, so I would like to discus it here at the lab when you get a chance.

To: Ginny Weasley, Hogwarts From: Marcus Belby, Fitzrovia, London
Ginny,
I hope you are feeling better. My condolences once again.
I've spoken to Adrian and he's willing to give your tiara a try. We would need to take a night (or more) for the full test, and I told him you were planning to spend some time over here during the summer anyway so...what do you say? Adrian needs a few days to prepare things at home for the kids. Let me know if you're still up for it (and any other research we discussed).

[Jul. 8th, 2008|07:16 pm] |
Who: Marcus and Adrian What: Semiprofessional consultation When: Tuesday afternoon Where: Marcus' lab in London Why: Hell if Adrian knows! He just works here.
Adrian had arranged for Charles and Ellie to spend the afternoon with friends to get the time free to visit Marcus in London. Marcus had been a bit obtuse about the nature of the project in his owl, which vaguely concerned Adrian. Normally Marcus was more upfront about what he was doing. Adrian supposed it was possible that Marcus had finally found his inner Slytherin and was just being cagey because he could, but he counted that unlikely. Probably he'd just found himself in need of the advice of a Healer for whatever he was currently working on.
Such were Adrian's thoughts as he made his way to the door of Marcus' lab and knocked, trying to ignore the vague feeling of exposure he felt from being outside wards. |

Who: The Weasleys and all those who loved Ron When: Thursday evening, June 12th Where: The Burrow Why: Grieving together is what makes us a community
The Weasleys had made it known that they would be receiving guests Thursday evening at dusk. Molly kept herself busy, bustling around preparing food for the many people that were expected to arrive with condolences, but her face remained grim, and the kitchen somehow looked dark and dreary.
The twins sat at the kitchen table, talking in low murmurs with Charlie, who had flown in from Romania as soon as he had heard from McGonagall. When Arthur wasn't trying to get Molly to sit, he was peering out the window, ready to get the door for any visitors.
It was not mentioned by anyone, but over the past two days the wards around The Burrow had been recast, strengthened, and improved to a level only matched by Hogwarts itself. Each Weasley had taken a turn. If they were to gather all their eggs in one basket, that basket would be made of cold steel this evening.

A man rushed in and dragged Robards and Dawlish into a quick huddle. They spoke briefly and then all left with undecorous haste. |

OWLS Meeting, Dungate House, London (pre-lecture) |

Dungate House sat quietly in the late spring gloaming, the gardens neatly trimmed. It was a match for any other great house on the street. If the neighbors had known it was there, they would have approved. It was stately. It was ostentatious. It had real human servants instead of house-elves.
Inside, two bars and a buffet were set up in the ballroom. Rows of chairs faced a podium, but it was deserted at first.
The oldest wizards arrived first, either to find the best vantage for wizardwatching or to get started on their drinking.
Dungate House was no longer a house, per se, but the home of one of Wizarding London's most powerful institutions, the Old Wizarding Literary Society. Some people considered it more powerful than the Wizengamot. Some considered it an auxiliary to that body. And some considered it a mandatory social event.
Whatever they thought of it, pureblooded wizards and witches came here once a month to hear a lecture on some topic of interest. Tonight they looked forward to Draco Malfoy.
The staff had laid on extra spirits, just in case. |

Marcus, Ten Years Gone |
[May. 28th, 2008|08:31 am] |
It was early morning and the mist was still on the ground. He lay on the granite bench, cold seeping into his bones from the hard stone below. For a long while there was stillness. Eyes closed, he began to speak softly.
"It’s been forever, I know. No excuses. I have to admit, I was angry there for a while. And then Luna came back and I was…well I was really angry. Or confused. Or relieved. And angry. I guess she never really left, so it’s not as if she actually came back, so I assume once you’ve gone on, you’re not about to come back, right? Can you blame a wizard for hoping? I suppose I should know better by now.
"I’ve…been spending some time with Charlie’s little sister, Ginny. She’s run into some trouble and I’m trying to help. It’s complicated, but I feel like I’m doing something useful. You always asked me what I was going to do with my talents. Maybe I’m just going to help people, one at a time.
"Oh, and Sally has come back. I can’t really remember if she left before or after… We’re not back together or anything, but it looks like we’re still friends, and I’d really rather that was the way it stayed. To be perfectly honest, I’ve pretty much lost interest in the whole romance thing. A few questions have been raised about that, and I have to admit that they’re reasonable questions. Nothing is what you might call, clearly defined at the moment.
"You would probably be pretty interested in the current political situation. It looks like there are a significant number of people who are displeased with the current administration, and are planning on doing something about it. Astonishingly, I am including myself in that number. Yes, I was surprised too. I guess your activism rubbed off more than we both thought.
"I haven’t spoken to Dad in… a long time. Missy and I owl at Christmas and birthdays, but we haven’t kept in touch since she left school. That’s about it for the family. I don’t have any plans to change the situation, but I thought it was only fair that I mention it.
"I miss you."
More silence. After a while, he sat up, muscles stiff from the cold. For a long moment, he sat, head in hands, lashes spiky with unshed tears. Then, looking out into the distance, he vanished with a pop.

Do the clothes make the wizard? |
[May. 10th, 2008|04:18 am] |
Who: Adrian Pucey and Marcus Belby What: A visit to the tailor When: Monday afternoon, May 12th Where: Fitzrovia and Diagon Alley Why: Because Marcus needs to look presentable and who better to help?
Marcus had spent the morning cleaning up the mess that his lab had recently become. There were scrolls scattered on almost every flat surface, and the kits had decided to build a nest in one of his larger cauldrons. It had always been hard for him to throw away anything that he might find useful later. He had finally collected everything into some semblance of order, and sat down with a cup of tea to relax while waiting for Adrian. |
