Summary: (Backdated) Over a decade ago, Kore and Lorius were not so damaged.
Lorius didn't know where Loukia was, but that wasn't unusual. He was more accustomed to her absence than her presence, and provided she did not wander in sometime during breakfast, that was one less person to feed.
He was usually up the earliest. Kore would need something to eat before she went to work, and afterwards it would be easier to have something in the pot to simmer for the rest of the day than to try and cook while looking after Alena or help the neighbors for the scant bit of coin he could scrounge up in their neighborhood. And sometimes, someone stopped by for something to eat on the go, which could earn them a few coins. He could find better work farther away, in more affluent areas of the city, but the idea of Alena being left alone, or trying to keep an eye on her and take her with him, made Lorius nervous. She was such a pretty child, and Lorius was not that naive, even for a seven year old.
Their home didn't really have rooms - a wooden wall blocked off the sleeping area from direct sight of the door and the rough, sooty fireplace was the only privacy they had, but at least it blocked the light. By the time Kore was up, Lorius had crouched by that fireplace for nearly half a candle mark, the small fire heating up the room to uncomfortable temperatures in the summer heat, but Lorius didn't dare open the door to let some of that heat out at this hour. The morning was quiet but that didn't mean trouble wasn't lurking. His hair was plastered back with sweat, but he didn't mind much. He was more bothered by the blandness of the broth - there was more vegetable than meat in it, but his mental inventory of their pantry stopped when he heard the shuffling sounds of one of his sisters waking up.
