Gone were the days that Elena thought she could cope with everything on her own. Doubtless, it wouldn't stop her perpetually stubborn self from trying it all over again sooner rather than later, but on that day in particular, things had reached breaking point. She couldn't go to Damon, nor Stefan. Being part of the problem meant that they couldn't be part of the solution, and with the massive sledgehammer to the chest that was the appearance of Jenna, Elena needed her best friend then more than she ever possibly had before. It was with this thought in mind that Elena went hunting through the makeshift homes in search of Caroline.

She pushed her head into several of the huts and made a lot of half-hearted apologies as she searched for the blonde girl, growing more frustrated, more impatient and, most importantly, coming closer to the verge of tears with every failure to find her friend. It wasn't often that Elena actively went out to seek help, and she could almost feel the time before her headstrong, overly pride side came out in full force and ruined any progress that she was trying to make in the mess of problems that their lives had become. Letting out a small noise of pent up frustration, Elena scraped her fingers through her hair and looked around as she moved in a slow circle. All she wanted in that moment was a stupid cell phone, and some damn signal. She hadn't realised how much she took for granted until she had arrived on this island, but now wasn't the time for existential awareness of her privileged life. Now, all she wanted was to pour her heart out to her friend, maybe cry a bit and, hopefully, figure out how to fix the mess that she had made.

Finally Elena tried another hut, looked around to find it empty and that was it, she snapped at last. Everything that had been building up since she had first arrived on the island suddenly unleashed itself, unable to be contained and quashed any longer. She hit the outside wall hard, a loud sob escaping that she didn't care about enough to try and keep quiet as she rest her head against the wall. Everything was happening so soon, so fast, and she honestly didn't know how to cope with it all. She turned so her back was against the wall, and slid down slowly until she was sitting on the ground with her knees against her chest. Elena looked a complete state, with tear stains all over her face, blood stains still on her shirt and her hair a mess from all the time she had been spending with her hands in it - twisting, pushing, pulling and tugging constantly through the day as she had tried to process the events of the last few weeks. Elena's head dropped to her knees and she gasped softly before mumbling, "Caroline, where the hell are you?"

"Right. That," Caroline said with a rueful smile. Elena had always been the smart one, the one who said the right things, and at one point it had made Caroline jealous, but now she just took it in stride. She had other qualities all on her own that made her a worthwhile person; she didn't need to compete with anyone, let alone her best friend in the world who had enough problems on her plate.

"I know, sweetie," she said understandingly when Elena took all of the responsibility for Jenna's predicament on her shoulders. "We all feel responsible when someone we love gets hurt. But I know Jenna, and I know she wouldn't blame you. She's probably just scared to hurt you, you know? When it's new and all you can think about is blood, having your human niece right there in front of you isn't exactly the least tempting thing in the world. It's not personal, Elena. You've got to remember that."

She saw the sour look on Elena's face and knew that she wanted her to just drop it, but Caroline was like a stubborn pit-bull in situations like this and she wasn't going to let the other girl avoid this conversation. Plus, there was the small fact that she cared about the Salvatore brothers too and she wanted this all to get resolved before it drew everyone she cared about through the mud.

She listened as Elena explained what was going on, biting her lip in contemplation as she considered what to say. Should she be harsh with her friend, or answer with her heart and her sympathy? Sighing, she finally said, "Elena, if you really, honestly can't choose between them, then maybe you shouldn't be choosing either of them at all." It was maybe a little harsh, but it was the truth. If she was having this hard of a time picking, then clearly her feelings weren't strong enough one way or another to make a solid decision on the matter. "Maybe you just need a little time to figure out your feelings, but I really think that if you're this confused, any decision you make is going to end up being one that you regret."

There was a part of Elena that understood that it wasn't personal, that Jenna was just struggling with the transition, but that didn't really make it any easier to know that her presence was only making things harder for her aunt. She let out a slow exhale of air, and nodded. She knew that Caroline was right about this - after all, her friend had a level of understanding about the situation that Elena could never comprehend - and after a small rub of her eyes, she looked at her with a weak smile.

"We'll help her though. I mean, look at you Car. You've been so strong through all of this, you really have. I can't think of anyone I'd want to help any more than you," Her smile grew fonder as she spoke. Despite everything that was going on, she was still endlessly appreciative to have Caroline there. Not just for the problem of helping Jenna adjust, but also because she honestly didn't know how she would cope without her best friend here. She was writing in her diary again, something that hadn't happened much since she had first gotten together with Stefan, and that was usually a fairly strong indicator that she was struggling. Having Caroline here made things just that little bit easier, and she took her friends hand to give it a small squeeze.

Still, Caroline couldn't help her when it came to her choice. Stefan, the brother that she had been in love with for so long, or Damon, the one that had been there for her when Stefan had left them. Each had their own qualities that made her fall for them in the first place, and she just let out another sigh. "I don't know if it's my decision that's the hard part, so much as the repercussions. I can't do it to them, Car. I can't hurt them. if I don't decide, then maybe they'll move on, you know? Find someone else, someone who won't make as much of a mess as I have."

In her heart of hearts, she knew who she would choose. The problem was, she also knew that it would devastate the one not chosen. She had seen the downward spiral that this had triggered before, and she didn't want to be the cause of that again. "Maybe I just need to let them both go, before I hurt everyone I love."

Caroline was glad to see Elena smile a little, even if it was weak and still a bit sad. It was just nice to know that her best friend was still in there, underneath all of the conflict and grief. She really hoped that eventually, she'd be able to help her back to her vibrant, happy self, a person that she hadn't seen since... Jesus, since before Katherine had showed her snooty face. Things had been so chaotic since then, she felt like it'd been forever since they'd had a chance to just let their hair down and have a good time.

Resolving to plan some kind of hut sleepover some point soon, she focused back on Elena's voice and felt her heart warm at her kind words. "Aw, shucks. You're gonna make me cry," she told her, waving her hand in an attempt to dismiss her praise. Elena really could be so sweet, and it was nice to hear that she appreciated their friendship just as much as she did. Likewise, she'd had a rough few weeks with her father going psycho on her and being ripped away from a lot of the people she loved, and even if she hadn't discussed it with Elena, she knew that they would get to it eventually. One problem at a time.

She wished she could just make Elena's decision for her, but unfortunately the other girl was the only one who could choose which guy she wanted to try something with. Personally, Caroline had always thought that Stefan was the better choice for her, if only because she'd seen how happy they were and how single-minded they'd both been about their love for each other, but she knew that Damon could be very charming in his own right and that he'd done a lot for Elena in the past few rough months. "Sweetie, the problem doesn't go away if you ignore it," she said firmly, but not unkindly. "They're not just gonna up and forget about you, mess or no. They love you; it's not that simple. You have to figure this out, okay? I know it's hard, but it'll be for the best."

She waited for Elena to continue, but shook her head when she heard what she had to say. "Again, no one's gonna forget about this, including you. If you try and let them go, it's going to hurt. If you choose the one you know in your gut that you love, it's going to hurt. If you just ignore it and keep pingponging back and forth between them, it's going to hurt. You see where I'm going with this?" She smiled ruefully and finished, "No matter what, you're going to have to hurt someone, Elena. Sometimes that's what life-- and love, for that matter-- is about. I know it's against your nature to be selfish, but it would be far more selfish for you to put off this decision than it would be to make it. You owe them your honesty, and you deserve to be loved. Never forget that."

Elena was sure that her bright and bubbly personality was still there, it had to be, it had just been buried under the layers of stress and pain of the events that had happened since those days where all she worried about was whether or not she was nailing all the moves in cheerleading practise. Those days felt so long ago lately, and it was hard to believe that things would ever be that simple again. Nothing seemed to be simple in her life any more.

"Well, damn right. Stop being so amazing and maybe I won't have to tell you all about it," She wrapped her arm around Caroline's shoulder, resting her head against the side of her friends lightly. She really was lucky to have Caroline with her, and she was going to start making up for how much the girl had done for her as soon as possible. As soon as she managed to get on top of the mess of problems surrounding her life, Caroline was going to become number one person on the island.

"I just think they should get the chance at something a little more...simple. I mean, who am I to make them wait while I figure out my feelings? If I let them go, maybe they'll find someone better..." It hurt even as Elena said it, but she wasn't sure what else she could do. She knew that when it boiled down to it, she had already chosen long ago, but that didn't change the fact that she had complicated things so much. Caroline may have believed that she deserved to be loved, but Elena wasn't so sure any more. "I love him, Car, I really do, they just....both deserve so much more."

Caroline could relate. Before becoming a vampire, all she'd worried about was planning the next amazing party and which outfit she was going to wear in the morning. She'd never had to think about the sun burning her to a crisp, or needing to drink blood in order to stay alive (well, sort of.) It'd been a very scary, monumental change to her life, and although it'd led to her becoming a lot more mature, she often missed the days when she'd been more carefree. She knew that Elena felt much the same way sometimes.

"Oh, gosh," Caroline laughed, coloring and hugging Elena back. Smiling into her friend's hair, she murmured, "You're not so bad yourself, you know. I know you think you're awful right now, but you're not. You're a human being and you got a little confused. It happens." She squeezed her tightly, hoping that she got the message. She didn't want Elena to hate herself anymore; she just wanted her to be happy.

"Elena, hon, nothing about love is or ever will be simple. Trust me," Caroline said with a snort, thinking of her own complicated feelings for two men in her life right now. Sometimes it couldn't be helped, and Elena wasn't the first person to be torn between two people they cared about. That didn't make it completely okay, of course, but it wasn't like she'd committed a horrible sin. "I'm assuming you mean Stefan," Caroline guessed, tone making it clear that she would be very surprised if Elena corrected her to the other brother. "And if you do, I can tell you right now that that boy would do just about anything for you. I never bought for a second that he stopped caring about you, and I know that he'd disagree with you in a heartbeat about deserving better. You are who he wants, that's all there is to it."

She sighed and grasped Elena's shoulders, shaking them lightly. "Go with your heart, Elena. If Damon truly loves you, he'll forgive you for this, and you both will get past it. You're not going to lose him in your life forever. I'm sure of it."

"You're my best friend, Car, you know that? I don't know what I'd do without you." She let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head a little, "Probably go completely crazy, I'm guessing. I mean-" she paused - even if it was Caroline who had found her like that, she was still a little embarrassed by her teary emotional outburst, "Well, you saw me."

It was hard to remember the days when things were easy, when all that she, Caroline and Bonnie had to think about was what social event was coming up next, and whether or not they wanted to actually attend. Sure, things probably felt difficult then - what teenager doesn't think that their life is the worst, honestly - but if she had known that this was the life that they were headed for, she would have relished those days far more. That's not to say that she would change everything; she had grown closer to so many people in the events since the death of her parents, not to mention she wouldn't give up meeting Stefan for the world. It had been difficult, harder than she thought any relationship could be, but it had still been worth it.

It was that train of thought that had her let out a soft exhale of breath. That was it, the defining moment that she had been waiting for. She smiled, still sad, and placed her hands on top of Caroline's on her shoulders. Her head tipped slightly, resting on top of hers and her friends hand for a moment, and she nodded, "It's him. It really is him. I mean, I wasn't even sure, not honestly, until just now, but you're right. It's always been him."

It didn't make things any easier, of course it didn't. Elena was still facing the terrible moment where she had to confront Damon about it all, and the very thought of it twisted her stomach into knots, but she couldn't help but feel relieved. Yes, maybe she still thought that they should both be rid of her and find a non-Petrova doppelganger who wouldn't over-complicate their lives, but Caroline was right. She needed to go with her heart, and on occasion she was allowed to be a little selfish.

"God, thank you Caroline," she said softly, and as she spoke her smile gradually lost the melancholy hints. It wasn't over yet, by a long shot, but she had at least made the first important step in getting there. She finally knew what she truly felt. With one problem on it's way to being solved, however, that just brought Jenna straight back into her mind again, and she squeezed the blonde girl's hands lightly. "Will you come with me, to see Jenna? There's...a complication, you see. She can't remember if she drank human blood or not, and I can't-"

Her breath hitched and she exhaled slowly, looking at Caroline with the kind of expression that made it clear that she knew her friend wouldn't like what she was about to say. Still, she couldn't think of any other option, and the alternative wasn't even an option. "I can't let her die, Car. Not again. I can't lose her again. But she won't do it unless you're there, she's scared she's going to lose control."

"Hey, you're my best friend too, silly goose," Caroline replied, smiling fondly when Elena continued to thank her for helping with this situation. "We all go a little crazy sometimes, Elena. You've got a lot on your plate right now. It's okay."

Things were so complicated at the moment, Caroline felt like her head was going to explode. She may or may not have a clone back at Mystic Falls, Jenna was a vampire, her dad was a psychopath, Elena was still torn between the Salvatore brothers and to top it all off, she was going to have to eat furry little animals until they found some other way to get around the whole blood issue. In short, she definitely wished she could just hit the rewind button and go back to a time before vampires had ever been a word used in her vocabulary beyond making fun of Twilight. It was an irrational and childish wish, and one that she didn't really mean-- after all, she'd met some great people and had grown up so much since Damon and Stefan had come into their town-- but it was there nonetheless, especially watching Elena break down in front of her like she was. They both could use a serious break.

Caroline had expected Elena's epiphany to come at some point, and she was relieved that she seemed so certain about her feelings, at least for the moment. She knew her friend, and she figured she'd probably be back to waffling once this conversation was over-- how to not hurt this person, is this really what I want, all that-- but she was hoping that perhaps it would actually stick this time. She knew that Stefan loved Elena more than anything in the world, and it just made sense for them to get back together, in Caroline's opinion anyway. Perhaps she was biased because she hadn't really seen much of the chemistry between Damon and Elena, but in her gut she still felt like Stefan was the right one regardless.

"You're welcome, sweetie," Caroline said, hugging her close when she finally saw a glimpse of a smile. "I think you're making the right decision. Just be sure of it before you do anything rash, okay?" With that said, she let the conversation go and allowed Elena to change the subject. She nodded immediately when she asked if she could help Jenna, but then got a little hesitant at the idea of Elena being the human blood she drank. "Wait, wait... I don't like the sound of that. Isn't there some villager we can dupe into being her first victim?" Her eyes flashed with guilt as she remembered killing a stranger without any thought or hesitation, and she urged gently, "Elena, I really don't think you understand just how hard it is to keep control when you're starting out. I don't want to risk it, even with me there. I know you don't like it, but I think we should either find another option, or ask Stefan for help."
