Gone were the days that Elena thought she could cope with everything on her own. Doubtless, it wouldn't stop her perpetually stubborn self from trying it all over again sooner rather than later, but on that day in particular, things had reached breaking point. She couldn't go to Damon, nor Stefan. Being part of the problem meant that they couldn't be part of the solution, and with the massive sledgehammer to the chest that was the appearance of Jenna, Elena needed her best friend then more than she ever possibly had before. It was with this thought in mind that Elena went hunting through the makeshift homes in search of Caroline.

She pushed her head into several of the huts and made a lot of half-hearted apologies as she searched for the blonde girl, growing more frustrated, more impatient and, most importantly, coming closer to the verge of tears with every failure to find her friend. It wasn't often that Elena actively went out to seek help, and she could almost feel the time before her headstrong, overly pride side came out in full force and ruined any progress that she was trying to make in the mess of problems that their lives had become. Letting out a small noise of pent up frustration, Elena scraped her fingers through her hair and looked around as she moved in a slow circle. All she wanted in that moment was a stupid cell phone, and some damn signal. She hadn't realised how much she took for granted until she had arrived on this island, but now wasn't the time for existential awareness of her privileged life. Now, all she wanted was to pour her heart out to her friend, maybe cry a bit and, hopefully, figure out how to fix the mess that she had made.

Finally Elena tried another hut, looked around to find it empty and that was it, she snapped at last. Everything that had been building up since she had first arrived on the island suddenly unleashed itself, unable to be contained and quashed any longer. She hit the outside wall hard, a loud sob escaping that she didn't care about enough to try and keep quiet as she rest her head against the wall. Everything was happening so soon, so fast, and she honestly didn't know how to cope with it all. She turned so her back was against the wall, and slid down slowly until she was sitting on the ground with her knees against her chest. Elena looked a complete state, with tear stains all over her face, blood stains still on her shirt and her hair a mess from all the time she had been spending with her hands in it - twisting, pushing, pulling and tugging constantly through the day as she had tried to process the events of the last few weeks. Elena's head dropped to her knees and she gasped softly before mumbling, "Caroline, where the hell are you?"

"You're my best friend, Car, you know that? I don't know what I'd do without you." She let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head a little, "Probably go completely crazy, I'm guessing. I mean-" she paused - even if it was Caroline who had found her like that, she was still a little embarrassed by her teary emotional outburst, "Well, you saw me."

It was hard to remember the days when things were easy, when all that she, Caroline and Bonnie had to think about was what social event was coming up next, and whether or not they wanted to actually attend. Sure, things probably felt difficult then - what teenager doesn't think that their life is the worst, honestly - but if she had known that this was the life that they were headed for, she would have relished those days far more. That's not to say that she would change everything; she had grown closer to so many people in the events since the death of her parents, not to mention she wouldn't give up meeting Stefan for the world. It had been difficult, harder than she thought any relationship could be, but it had still been worth it.

It was that train of thought that had her let out a soft exhale of breath. That was it, the defining moment that she had been waiting for. She smiled, still sad, and placed her hands on top of Caroline's on her shoulders. Her head tipped slightly, resting on top of hers and her friends hand for a moment, and she nodded, "It's him. It really is him. I mean, I wasn't even sure, not honestly, until just now, but you're right. It's always been him."

It didn't make things any easier, of course it didn't. Elena was still facing the terrible moment where she had to confront Damon about it all, and the very thought of it twisted her stomach into knots, but she couldn't help but feel relieved. Yes, maybe she still thought that they should both be rid of her and find a non-Petrova doppelganger who wouldn't over-complicate their lives, but Caroline was right. She needed to go with her heart, and on occasion she was allowed to be a little selfish.

"God, thank you Caroline," she said softly, and as she spoke her smile gradually lost the melancholy hints. It wasn't over yet, by a long shot, but she had at least made the first important step in getting there. She finally knew what she truly felt. With one problem on it's way to being solved, however, that just brought Jenna straight back into her mind again, and she squeezed the blonde girl's hands lightly. "Will you come with me, to see Jenna? There's...a complication, you see. She can't remember if she drank human blood or not, and I can't-"

Her breath hitched and she exhaled slowly, looking at Caroline with the kind of expression that made it clear that she knew her friend wouldn't like what she was about to say. Still, she couldn't think of any other option, and the alternative wasn't even an option. "I can't let her die, Car. Not again. I can't lose her again. But she won't do it unless you're there, she's scared she's going to lose control."

"Hey, you're my best friend too, silly goose," Caroline replied, smiling fondly when Elena continued to thank her for helping with this situation. "We all go a little crazy sometimes, Elena. You've got a lot on your plate right now. It's okay."

Things were so complicated at the moment, Caroline felt like her head was going to explode. She may or may not have a clone back at Mystic Falls, Jenna was a vampire, her dad was a psychopath, Elena was still torn between the Salvatore brothers and to top it all off, she was going to have to eat furry little animals until they found some other way to get around the whole blood issue. In short, she definitely wished she could just hit the rewind button and go back to a time before vampires had ever been a word used in her vocabulary beyond making fun of Twilight. It was an irrational and childish wish, and one that she didn't really mean-- after all, she'd met some great people and had grown up so much since Damon and Stefan had come into their town-- but it was there nonetheless, especially watching Elena break down in front of her like she was. They both could use a serious break.

Caroline had expected Elena's epiphany to come at some point, and she was relieved that she seemed so certain about her feelings, at least for the moment. She knew her friend, and she figured she'd probably be back to waffling once this conversation was over-- how to not hurt this person, is this really what I want, all that-- but she was hoping that perhaps it would actually stick this time. She knew that Stefan loved Elena more than anything in the world, and it just made sense for them to get back together, in Caroline's opinion anyway. Perhaps she was biased because she hadn't really seen much of the chemistry between Damon and Elena, but in her gut she still felt like Stefan was the right one regardless.

"You're welcome, sweetie," Caroline said, hugging her close when she finally saw a glimpse of a smile. "I think you're making the right decision. Just be sure of it before you do anything rash, okay?" With that said, she let the conversation go and allowed Elena to change the subject. She nodded immediately when she asked if she could help Jenna, but then got a little hesitant at the idea of Elena being the human blood she drank. "Wait, wait... I don't like the sound of that. Isn't there some villager we can dupe into being her first victim?" Her eyes flashed with guilt as she remembered killing a stranger without any thought or hesitation, and she urged gently, "Elena, I really don't think you understand just how hard it is to keep control when you're starting out. I don't want to risk it, even with me there. I know you don't like it, but I think we should either find another option, or ask Stefan for help."
