Rules of the party:
1) No alcohol [personal belongings will not be checked for contraband, however].
2) Dates are mandatory until 8 pm.
3) After 8 pm, The Terrible Teaspoons will play until midnight, when the party is over.
4) Morning classes are suspended on Monday. Classes will resume after lunch.
5) Keep snogging to a respectable minimum, and out of the centre of the party.
6) NO FORNICATION!! [Professors, Heads, and Prefects will not be doing castle rounds tonight, however].

Why was this affecting him so much? Remus had seen Sirius go off with tons of other students over the years. It always hurt a little, but he never felt he had a right to be upset about it until now. Why was it so different? The analytical side of him was trying so hard to process all of what happened as fast as possible but it was just making him even dizzier. His only rationale was that it was because this was someone he knew Sirius hated, and it was also because Sirius had shoved him. Twice, cursed at him, and told him off. He couldn't blame it all on alcohol, as much as he wanted to.

Vaguely, he heard the sound of someone calling his name, but that didn't keep him from sinking to the floor. When she approached, it registered to him that it was Lily Evans. Was he all right? No. He was broken. "You should be enjoying the party, Lily."

It seemed so like him to insist she go back to the dance, even while he looked like he wanted to jump off a bridge. She smiled and shook her head, trying to catch his eye. "It's alright, I needed a breather. It's getting a little stuffy in there." A group of people came stumbling out of the Great Hall, rowdy and loud. They didn't pay much attention to Lily and Remus, thank Merlin, and went on their way. Still, Lily wasn't sure if Remus would talk in an open setting like this.

"Wanna go for a walk?" she asked. "It looks like you could go for some fresh air too." She stood up and held her hand out to him.

Jumping off a bridge was a pretty good start to how bad Remus felt. It truly felt like the world was crumbling all around him and he wasn't the type to become melodramatic over any little thing. This was one of the more devastating moments of his life.

He looked at her. Lily was so kind and compassionate. Surely she should be in the Great Hall, dancing with James and not worrying about anything else. But there she was, holding out her hand to him. He took it, but mostly lifted himself up onto his feet. The room was spinning, but he didn't want to tell her that. "All right," he said. He started to walk with her, with no real destination in mind.

Lily let him lead, not really caring where they went. She wasn't sure if he would actually talk about happened, but she wasn't going to push the matter. Remus was one of the quieter guys of the group and she wondered if that pertained to talking as well. They had their fair share of conversations, but it mostly kept to academics. This seemed to be a new level for them to talk about.

She kept thinking of different things to bring up to break the silence, but they all seemed to head to bad things. I'm happy you came to the dance. He certainly didn't seem happy he came now and she hadn't even been able to see him in the Great Hall. That Potions paper was rather challenging. Right, like classes was something he wanted to talk about. She tried so hard to think of something to skid around the subject, but maybe it wasn't needed.

"Do you want to talk about it at all?" She wasn't sure what it actually was, but she thought it might be better to be straight forward about it. If he didn't want to talk about it he'd tell her and she could ponder about other things to talk about.

If there was anyone he could tell anything to, it would be Lily. She was so kind and understanding, and she would understand. But he didn't want to trouble her, or ruin her night because his own had went to Hell. Did he want to talk about it? No, because that made it real. But he spoke up anyway.

"It's like you saw," he said quietly. "Sirius left with Lucius Malfoy. I.. thought.. at first, that it was because Sirius was drunk and didn't know what he was doing. But, he made it clear to me that he wanted to go. Shoved me, cursed me. I've never seen him like that before." The more he spoke, the more upset he became. By the end of it, his voice cracked and he ran a hand through his hair.

A frown spread across her face when Remus confirmed what she had seen. It didn't make any sense to Lily, but Remus seemed to be sure that Sirius had meant it, even wanted to go with Lucius. She knew Sirius well enough to know he would never want to be seen with someone like Lucius Malfoy. He was everything he detested, everything that was familiar about the family he tried so desperately to get away from. What had happened tonight?

"I don't know Remus, I heard him in the Great Hall, even with the band playing. He seemed pretty tossed. Did he bring the alcohol himself?" She had been surprised that the professors hadn't searched the students as they entered the Great Hall. They had forbidden any kind of alcoholic substance, but didn't really go to any great lengths to check. She couldn't help but feel that if they had, she and Remus wouldn't be having this conversation.

She reached out and squeezed his shoulder. She sensed that there might be something more to this for Remus, but that seemed like a completely personal matter. If he wanted to keep going and explain that, then he would.

She paused, thinking about the situation. "Do you think Lucius may have done something to him? A spell or something?" It seemed a little far fetched since Lucius was still a student as well, but she never liked that slimy git to begin with. He was a little too smooth for his own good and she wouldn't put it past him that he knew some more mature, dark magic.

It was possible, but he didn't know. "I don't know where the alcohol came from," he said. "I didn't come down until after the mandatory date part was over. He was tipsy by then." He didn't really want to listen to reason. He was still pretty broken, fragile, and not thinking properly about any of this.

"I..I know it seems unlikely. But if you could have seen him the way I did just now.. I.." His voice hitched in his throat and he looked down at his feet. "The things he said.. He waned to go with Malfoy. He looked me in the eye and told me so." He squeezed his eyes shut to keep any tears from forming.

He couldn't walk anymore. He stopped moving, and clenched his fists at his sides. His shoulder involuntarily shook. It hurt so much. "I ruined everything."

Remus had always seemed like the kind of guy to take the blunt end of everything and this was the topper. Lily stopped with him and just gave him a hug. She didn't really know what else to do, but he looked so vulnerable.

"You did nothing," she said, her chin resting on his shoulder. "If it's anyone's fault, it's Lucius'. Tonight isn't the time, but we'll figure things out and get Sirius back." She knew it was too cliche to talk about being strong, but she resolved that she would be that for Remus. She knew he had the rest of his friends to help and support him (well, at least James and Peter), but she would offer her help as well.

She pulled away from Remus, her hands rubbing his arms. "Things will be ok Remus. Something's up and we'll sniff it out."

There was so much she didn't know. Lily made some very valid points from being an outside observer, but had she known some key details of past events, she might see things a little differently. How could he tell her everything? He wanted her to understand, but he also really liked that she didn't.

"I rejected him, a few nights ago," he said quietly. "At least, I think I did." Remus didn't want to talk about that night, and what had almost been, but he thought it was vital in dissecting these most recent events. "I wasn't feeling well and he was taking care of me. It got.. a little intimate in the way we were touching and he.. I think, wanted to kiss me." He squeezed his eyes shut and lowered his head. "And I got scared. Because I couldn't believe he really wanted me. I couldn't understand why someone like him would want to kiss someone like me." He took a few shaky breaths and shook his head, ashamed of himself. "I tried to just stay close to him, but he was upset. I could tell. He left a minute later and I.. I know him.. I worry he's doing this because he feels he has something to prove. I wounded his pride."

Tears finally did escape when Remus opened his eyes and looked back up to face Lily again. "I'm in love with him."

Lily listened to everything with open ears, but she didn't hide her surprise when Remus confessed his feelings for Sirius. She knew the two held a special bond from the rest of the group (or at least she sensed it), but she would have never guessed this. Sirius had always seemed such a ladies man and Remus...well, he was definitely more introverted. But then again, Sirius pointed out many things about his demeanor to her through the journals and, just like with James, she had opened her eyes to see it was true. Perhaps it was just a front he used and Remus was the one he actually cared about.

"Well, it sounds like it was a first for you in this situation," she said slowly. She wanted to make sure everything came out right and that she didn't sound too all knowing. "You shouldn't think this is your fault because you said no Remus. Relationships...they need to start slow." She thought of Sirius and knew he was probably hurt by the rejection, especially if it was by someone he truly cared about. The fact of the alcohol being involved didn't help the matter.

Lily stepped in front of him, her hands rubbing his shoulders as she watched the tears escape. "Hey, love is nothing to cry over," she said, smiling and catching his eye. "Sirius doesn't know you care about him in this way, does he? He's drunk and was seduced by the dark side. If he was in his right state of mind, he never would have gone with Malfoy. Besides, even if he was being spiteful, that's what a wounded pride will do. If you guys have a chance to talk, things will work out. You'll see." She reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze. "Do you want something to drink? We could stop by the kitchens and get you something warm." She hoped she didn't sound like a complete twat by what she had said. She always wanted to be there for her friends, but she didn't always give the best advice or word it correctly.

Remus tried to listen to Lily, and wanted to believe all of the things she was saying. She made some good points, really, but that didn't make it hurt any less. His heart was broken, and truthfully he wasn't sure there was anything that could be done to repair it at this point. Time was said to heal all wounds, but he didn't think there were enough years left in his life for his heart to truly mend itself.

He was grateful for her compassion. Lily was truly a special girl, and her friendship meant a great deal to him. It made him feel guilty, though, for having to keep secrets from her about himself. He couldn't dwell on that right now, though, for he felt enough sorrow as it was over this whole situation with Sirius.

Remus shook his head slowly when she asked about getting him something warmt to drink. Hot chocolate could cure a lot of ailments as far as Remus was concerned, but he didn't think even that would properly remedy his broken heart. "I think I'm just going to go to bed," he said. "But please, let me walk you back to the dance."

Lily wasn't too surprised when Remus wanted to head back to the dormitory. She was sure that if she was in his position she would want the same thing. She just gave him a small smile and nodded her head, letting him walk her back. They didn't talk about anything and Lily let Remus be alone with his thoughts. She knew she couldn't say anything more to make him feel better. This was something he needed to do himself.

When they arrived back to the Great Hall, the music was still going on as loudly as ever and they could hear shouts and laughing from inside. It was strange to hear it all now and Lily almost wanted to go back with Remus. But she knew James was inside waiting for her and he needed to know about his friend. She turned to Remus and smiled, stepping in to give him a hug. "If you need anything, please let me know," she said. "I know you'll have your friends around you, but if you need a girls gentler touch." She pulled back and smiled.
