Hello everyone - Kate here!

Alright, so this is a ROUGH (ragged, sand-paper-like, etc) draft of my first real venture into original fiction in a very long time. The entire story was inspired by the first series of prompts, and it was really difficult to narrow down the scope to just these scenes since I'm still developing the overall plot (details, right?).

I would appreciate any and all thoughts. My main issue right now is tenses because of how I'm writing it... In other news, being new to IJ, I hope I did this right. >.>

There you have it... I welcome advice!

I don't know how many of you guys do book reviews, but I know some of you do. Drops of Crimson is looking for some book reviews for the August issue.

Turns out I've not been logged in for the last month or so. It explains why everything looked so quiet! Sorry for missing so much ^_^

Apparently it's been so long I forgot that to post to the comm, I actually had to tell it to post to the comm and not my own journal. So, um, link:

So, umm Prompt 18c: Changing your mind. Roman fic.

I've been trying to work out what to do with this - how to give it a plot - for a long time. I'm hoping if I use it for the prompts something will reveal itself.

It's somewere about AD 80, and Iuventius has come to Britain in search of his childhood friend Rufus, who is a member of the IX Legion based in Eboracum (York). Iuventius has a kind of (unresearched) PTSD from his escape from Pompeii and suffers from bad nightmare and occasional flashbacks. He's inherited his father's slave trading business, and he hopes to purchase the PoWs from the recent battles with the Brigantes.

More Maddy. This stuff comes to me really fast when I sit down to write it. I still don't know where I want it to go precisely, but I like to sit down and write what comes so far. At this point it is all sequential. [I'm also forcing myself to write a new original bit every time I write some fanfic...]

Post to Squee! I've just had Trapped accepted by Flashes in the Dark, a flashfiction horror blog. It'll be appearing on the 23rd of January. Response time was about half an hour!

It's not a paying market, but if anyone else has less than 1000 words of horror, it's worth submitting!

This little snippet came to me, and I had to write it. It's probably too vague, but I was trying to avoid giving up too much about my protagonist. I've been working on my description, as Jen and Katey know, so this was an attempt to work on that. This little piece is completely stand alone and silly.

My name is Laura, and I'm not only new to this group, but to insane journal as well. I've been writing for quite some time and have two books in the works- one YA novel and a YA short story cycle which is to double as my creative thesis for this final year of grad school. I'm applying to MFA programs this fall and will graduate with a master's in English in May. I want to be a professor of creative writing and a writer.

I write what I enjoy reading most- young adult fiction with a splash of magic realism. Some of my pieces tend to be more submersed in the magic than others. I do enjoy reading mainstream adult fiction as well, but I love a good ghost story.

I've had a few pieces of flash published and won one short story contest (held by Writer's Weekly).

I, too, am a bit of a grammar nazi, though if you're not interested in those kinds of corrections, let me know, and I'll concentrate solely on your content-- otherwise, I'll look at both. I work as an editor for Writers Notes, and I've been an adjunct professor of freshman composition lo these last five years, and I'm currently a journalist, so it's just in the blood. I'll try not to be obnoxious. ^_~ And I'm sure I'll make my own mistakes, so please let me know. If there's one thing I've learned in writing and teaching the same, it's that editing is not a respecter of persons.

On the personal side, I'm a mother of two boys (ages 9 and 11), and I've been married for 13 years.

Oh, and when I grow up, I want to be Stephen King.

I'm going back through some notes, and need to flesh out my world building. Badly.

So; I've got these world building questions but was hoping someone could recommend more. Links, books, anything. I'd be interested.

Thanks.

I did some non-fandom writing tonight!

So for my first post, here's a tiny snippet:

Why were they telling him about the Cor. He didn't want to know about the Cor. He wanted to head back to the front and stab someone he didn't know but had the gall to be his enemy in an uncomfortable place. Like the face.

That's it.
