1b: menace
This little snippet came to me, and I had to write it. It's probably too vague, but I was trying to avoid giving up too much about my protagonist. I've been working on my description, as Jen and Katey know, so this was an attempt to work on that. This little piece is completely stand alone and silly.
The small, red dot streaked across the cobblestone path, holding steady on a cracked piece of granite. I kept my eyes on it, from my seat on the uneven brick of the front stairs, keeping my distance. It jiggled back and forth provoking me, but I held back, taking in the scene. A quick glance around told me that I was alone. There was no one around. No one but Me and It.
Peeking around the wrought iron railing, I followed the gleaming circle from the stone to the grass, and back again. It took all I had to keep my curiosity at bay, as it came to rest some six inches from where I sat. Tentatively, I reached out towards it, and it darted away. This time, I lept after it. I had to know what it was. I pursued the scarlet speck down the length of the path to the driveway, and then out into the street. No matter how fast I moved, it was a step ahead of me.
The little menace led me up the grass embankment, before abruptly disappearing. I turned around quickly, seeking it through the darkness of the night. It reappeared by the dying rhododendron bush, and I cautiously approached. Swiftly, I reached out to touch it, for a moment I thought I had it, but just as quickly, it was gone.
Its progress was slow and deliberate this time, and I trailed it in a similar fashion, not wanting to startle it. On the shaggy grass, it blinked in and out several times before continuing up the stairs again, and vanishing. I stared after it for a moment, first from below, then finally climbing the cold brick to get a closer look. It was gone. It would be back. It always was. It might be a day, or it might be a week, but the little red dot always came back. I settled onto the stair to wait and rest.
