Be Careful
Who: Justin, Zania and Lance
Where: Zania’s
When: Early morning (around 1:45am)
Justin hadn’t been sleeping much when he got Zania’s text message. He’d been roaming the house, calling out for his ghost friend, wanting to finally have a conversation with her to figure out what the hell she wanted with him. But his sister’s message had him shifting priorities fairly quickly, and it didn’t take him long to change into a pair of jeans and a long sleeved thermal shirt. After tugging his shoes on, Justin left the house and immediately started for Zania’s. He moved quickly, but barely broke a sweat before knocking loudly on her door, his hand falling to the door knob. He would let himself in if she didn’t answer in a few seconds, his impatience simmering and his concern overwhelming anything else. “Zania,” he called out.
“Who is it?” Zania called out as she sat in the living room, tying up her boots. The room was a mess with blood on the couch and the floor, plus the dead body of what was a werewolf. It made her glad they didn’t have carpet, otherwise clean up would be even worse, though she hadn’t gotten to that yet. Zania had showered and dressed, all moving slower than she would have liked. Her body was still sore, even if she’d healed.
"Justin," he said, once he heard her call out to him. Justin managed to relax a little, knowing she was at least able to talk, but he still wanted to see her for himself. Her text had, of course, sent about a dozen morbid images to his mind, even though he knew she was a vampire and could heal. She was still his sister, and she had been shot. "Open up!"
“The door’s unlocked!” she called back. The only reason she hadn’t invited him in to begin with was that inviting anyone in could be dangerous. She couldn’t face another vampire right now, not in her condition, and she definitely couldn’t handle another werewolf till she got some more blood in her system.
He was inside before she had finished speaking, and he paused, taking in his surroundings while slowly closing the door. “Jesus,” he murmured, smelling the blood before he actually saw it. It looked like a massacre had happened. Justin’s eyes sought out his sister, and he walked over to her quickly. “Are you okay? Let me look at you.” She looked like she was in one piece, but he needed to see for himself to make sure.
“I’m okay,” she said, cringing as she rose to her feet. It was weird to have no visible injuries, yet still be in pain from them. More blood and that might go away, but at least she wasn’t choking and bleeding out anymore. “I had a blood bag from Nic in the fridge. It was enough to heal me up.” She’d been hoping to spread it out over a couple of weeks, but instead it was gone in an instant and she still needed more.
She looked to still be in pain, so Justin was as careful as he could be when he pulled her into a quick, but firm hug. It was a strange feeling to know if she hadn't been a vampire, she would have been killed. When he pulled back, Justin studied her face intently. "Do you need more blood?" He had no idea if his being a werewolf would affect her in any way, but he wanted to offer it anyway.
Zania hugged him back as hard as she could, needing him there just as she’d needed Lance there. It was good to know that there were people in her life that would come running in an emergency, just in case. “I do, but December said she has some. I can swing by and pick it up. But if you’ll go see Nic, he can take a pint for later, just in case.” It was always good to have extra on hand.
"Yeah." He could do that a bit later, when things wound down a little. Justin turned to take in the sight of the mess again. "You need help cleaning this shit up?" Or maybe the police were supposed to come by. Who the fuck knew anymore. It wasn't like this was a normal crime. "Did you get any reason for why this happened? You said they took Clementine?"
“Thanks, though,” she said, offering a small smile. She really appreciated him offering blood; she just wasn’t willing to drink straight from him. It might not be traumatic for her, but it sure as would be for him and she wasn’t going to put him through that. “Yeah, I… I feel like we should probably turn the body in, but the rest I definitely need help with.” It didn’t occur to her that it was a crime scene and that scrubbing it down might not be the thing to do. Times like that were long gone in her opinion. “There was no reason, no warning! He just busted in the door and let a werewolf loose on us!”
"Someone ought to call Serge," Justin muttered, stepping away from Zania toward the body. "Did you recognize the guy at all? Seen him around before?" He had a feeling cleaning up was going to take awhile, but he was willing to help his sister out. "Did he hurt Clementine before taking her?" Justin paused and then knelt down beside the body to get a better look.
“He was on the mass text I sent out, but I haven’t heard back yet.” Which kind of surprised her, but kind of didn’t. She’d taken care of it. There wasn’t much he could do except move the body and report Clementine as missing. “I’ve never even seen him. And the thing is, he wasn’t human when he came at me. He was just wild. The other guy had him on a leash.” Which was bizarre. She didn’t think Justin would let anyone leash him. “He cut her with a knife, but only when she ran. I told her to run.”
Justin looked up at Zania with a surprised look in his eyes before it darkened and he stood. "What sick fuck would do that? And what sick fuck would let that be done to them?" He shook his head and then ran a hand through his hair. "If he took her, then maybe there was a reason for it, especially if he simply shot you and went after her. It's not like anyone can leave Delphi. We'll find her."
“I don’t know. It was weird. I’m not even sure if he had control over the wolf. If I hadn’t jumped in the way, it might’ve gotten Clementine.” Which really made her wonder at his purpose. If Clementine had gotten hurt, would he have tried to take her instead? It didn’t look like he was expecting a vampire to be there, otherwise he never would have left her for dead. “We have to find her. Who knows what that sick fuck will do to her.”
Lance had started calling Kenzie, at least three times since he’d left Zania’s house, but it kept ringing and ringing without anyone answer. He let himself back into Zania’s house, armed now, guns in an actual holster under his jacket and a shotgun over his shoulder. “Zan, I can’t reach Kenzie,” he said, stopping when he saw Justin. “Um...hi?”
Justin was about to respond when a guy walked into the house. It was instinctual to move toward Zania in a protective manner, and he studied the other guy intently, taking in the sight of the gun Lance had. "I'm guessing you know him," Justin said, but ready to jump into action if Zania said no.
If she’d been in better condition, she would have moved to stand beside Lance. Instead she just leaned forward, bracing herself against the arm of the couch. “This is Lance. You came by his house one time, while I was there,” she reminded him. “Lance, this is my brother, Justin. Have you tried reaching her at the Ryker’s house?” She was tempted to say the brothel, but didn’t want to highlight Kenzie’s career choice after their last conversation.
Lance didn’t like Zania looking like that. It made him anxious. Almost as much as the guy who was moving between them, but once she explained he was her brother Lance supposed that made sense. “She knows me pretty well,” he confirmed with a smile that would be wicked if it didn’t fit him so well. “Did I try her where?” he asked Zania, then thought about it and shook his head. “No, not yet. I was thinking of heading that way. She might just be sleeping something off, but considering.” He pointed towards the blood on Zania’s floor and shrugged.
Lance. The guy Zania was seeing. Justin's gaze became more studious as it shifted back to Lance. Right. He merely lifted a brow at Lance's comment about Zania knowing him well, not really appreciating the innuendo. Assuming that had been Lance's intent. It was possible Justin was just being overly judgmental because he was seeing Justin's sister. "I can get a hold of a couple people to help clean this up," Justin said, "if you two need to go find someone." Clementine was missing. Was she the only one?
“His cousin Kenzie might be missing,” Zania clarified. “And we know for sure that Clementine is. This can probably wait till morning, unless you want to drag people out of bed to clean up blood. And I want to stop by the morgue and get some blood from December ‘cause I’m good for nothing until I do that.” She honestly didn’t know what to do first, since everything felt important. She tugged on one of her dreadlocks in frustration, looking at the crime scene. “I told Devin to drop by sometime tomorrow, since I just dropped the supernatural bomb on him. I’d like this cleaned up before he gets here.”
Lance was used to that look that Justin was giving him, but ignored it completely. He got it, Zania’s brother, but he didn’t give two shits about what the guy thought. “I want to swing by where she works, see if she’s there just you know...busy.” There was always a chance that was why Kenzie wasn’t answering her phone. He didn’t care if they cleaned up now or later, or what this Devin guy needed to know or didn’t need to know. “I can take you to the morgue, then while you’re there I’ll swing by Mannix’s.” Which he really thought of as Jack’s but he wasn’t about to say that name out loud for fear it might come out sounding differently than it should.
"It can wait," Justin said, regarding the mess. "Serge might want to come by first anyway. I don't know." He didn't really care either, as long as everything got cleaned up. He hated thinking some of the blood on the ground had belonged to his sister. He was still assessing Lance, but decided he could figure him out later. Justin turned to Zania. "Go to the morgue. I'll go home and contact a few people, see if they've heard of anything else happening around the dome. Text me if you need me. If not, I'll come by at sunrise and get this shit cleaned up."
“Okay,” she said, nodding as she looked between them. She was glad their plans worked together because she wasn’t in a frame of mind to have to decide between them. Getting blood had to be her first priority, no matter how important everything else seemed. “Thank you for coming by,” she said, giving Justin a hug. It wasn’t often that she felt she needed her big brother, but this was definitely one of those times. “I’ll let you know what we find, and I’ll see you around sunrise. Be careful out there.”
Lance was a little relieved that Justin wasn’t coming with them. Not that he had anything against extra help, but he wasn’t too keen on spending some free time with Zania’s brother, especially not with that look that he’d been given earlier. It wasn’t really a thing worth judging him on yet. Or ever. That ‘yet’ came to mind worried him, but that wasn’t something to focus on right now. Instead he just reached out for Zania, mostly for support. “We should get going.”
“You be careful too.” He didn’t know Lance, and even if Zania trusted him, Justin didn’t. But he knew his sister could hold her own, obviously. Justin pulled back from his sister, gave a quick nod of acknowledgment to Lance, and then headed for the door. He knew it was damn early, but he had a few people to contact regardless. If people were going missing, there really wasn’t much time to sleep.
