As a reminder, tomorrow evening is the monthly Fight Club match up. I tried to make the date Valentine's Day, but Jacob disagreed, so you're welcome for the wait.

If you're new this month, we have a few simple rules in place. No weaponry, and every match is randomly drawn from a hat so no whining about who you get paired with. Powers are left "outside" of the ring, meaning they aren't to be used in these exercises. We're well aware some people are naturally more strong due to their powers, and we just ask that they not go overboard with things.

Leave your revenge and vendettas with your powers and weaponry. Keep your grudges to the level of who beat you last and no killing or even horrendously maiming someone. We will pull you out if you purposely try to permanently injure someone and you won't be welcomed back. Accidents happen, of course, and it's usually fairly easy to tell what is and what isn't an accident. I don't particularly care who wronged you before you entered this place, it's not going to be on our heads if you decide that now is your opportunity to kill that person. At least pretend to act like the adults I know you're all capable of being. In some fashion.

Do I truly overthink everything?

Don't answer that. Forget I asked, actually.

[PRIVATE]
I can't decide if I made a good choice or I was incredibly stupid.

Would I have been betraying Henry if I had simply gone for it?

No. Perhaps. He would think it is a betrayal, given this world and how far removed we are. Even my thinking that it might be likely shows it as such. But I have already qualified that relationship for what it is and cannot continue remaining guilty over it.

I enjoy Alfred's company, obviously. I wouldn't keep it if I didn't. He's intelligent and a good conversationalist, eager to fight and we have similar interests. It's been several months now and it's not as if I long for that sort of companionshi-

Ugh. Nevermind. Not today.

You don't have to assume everyone does, but it's bloody obvious when they do. You just don't like participating in anything that you're not a master of, and no one's got everything figured out when it comes to romantic relationships.

Right, so you sent him packing and now you're over analyzing everything? Is that the long and short of it?

Why would I willingly set myself up for awkwardness when I already enjoy his company as is? Relationships and feelings complicate things. Just look at your own I don't think I'm quite equipped for that sort of entanglement.

Yes. I know his feelings were at least hurt a bit, but he seemed to take it well.

But they can be really fun complications.

Look, if all of that spark and flash leaves you cold - if you truly don't feel any inclination to have a relationship with him - you did the right thing in getting him to bugger off, and he can accept it or be a prat and not. But if you're still thinking about it now - and it's not just guilt at making Cheery McCheerson sad - then I think you need to face up that complicated isn't the same as worthless.

Neither of us do meaningless well. You try and fail spectacularly at it. Can you truly tell me that it's worth it?

I don't know, Jacob. I'll likely scare off anyone by immediately jumping into thoughts and futures and all the things that could happen, but I can't simply turn that part of my brain off, nor am I cut out for anything that doesn't require strings. And jumping into something without knowing? Me?

I suppose that's the issue. You're never going to know.

You're right, I'm not the best person to advocate for having relationships that er. Ended well. But even the worst ones, even the ones that I regret wholeheartedly, they did one thing that sitting alone and being in control didn't do - they got me out of my head. Made me realise things about me, the world, things I wanted to do, things I'd never do. The right person helps you figure who you are, and the wrong one helps you figure who you don't want to be. I think that's important, even if it ends in literal flames and murder.

This is why I prefer books.

Books don't hold your hand and tell you how pretty you look standing in someone's viscera.

I don't like having my hand held and I already know I look good in the blood of my enemies.

It is nice spending time with someone who doesn't have any preconceived notions or judges me for my life choices.

Isn't his home world entirely doomed and horrible? Maybe that helps with the judging and expectations. I'd tease about the whole asking permission for a snog bit but you know, I've come to respect people who that. Good people. Well done.

Incredibly, decidedly horrible. It'd be like if London was ravaged by eternal darkness, vampires and werewolves and throw in a few fire-happy people.

Henry always asked permission and it was slightly maddening. I appreciated it at first but sometimes I wonder if they do it because they know I can kill them.

I like the fire bit; the rest can go rot.

You just told a perfectly nice chap above that you make a point to break people's arms. Comes off a certain way.

I know there's a certain air to pretending to be weak and unskilled so that people try to take advantage of that and I have a better shot at them, but I hate being underestimated, Jacob. It's irksome.

Fine, RIGHT, I know I don't have it like you in that department, and it's arse that it happens. But you said it was maddening when people walk on eggshells around you and I still gave you a perfectly good reason as to why they do so, so I'm right anyhow.

Why can't we have a nice gang war here? It'd be such a laugh. Always wanted to hoist the Rook colours into the air and have a good victory snog after. Missed opportunities.

It was rhetorical, I know exactly how I come acr-- nevermind.

Because there aren't millions crammed into one little city. More like hundreds and a small portion of them quite overpowered to us.

Don't need millions to have a chasm between the few and the many.

It'll happen, Jacob. You and I both know it's only a matter of time before the strings are unraveled.

The strings unravel, and we're there to string them up.
