Thread: Nowhere to go but up
Date: June 12, Morning
Characters: Jaime, Rachel, Luka(NPC) and Rory(NPC)
Location: Ishii household
Summary: Jaime and Rachel discuss what happened the night before
He hadn't slept that night, of course he hadn't. But this time it was for different reasons than before. For one thing he couldn't stop checking in on Luka and Rory throughout the rest of the night, constantly needing reassurance that they were in fact fine.
In between those lapses he was attacked by massive bouts of guilt, leaving him to pace back and forth as he quietly chastised himself for being irresponsible. It was a small wonder he didn't wake Rory. And in those moments when his mind would give him some kind of reprieve, he thought of Rachel. He would collapse in a heap on the floor remembering how she looked at him and the way she implied that she couldn't trust him. Those times were the worst.
He'd never meant to disappoint her. She should have never even found out that he left the house at night but no one could have predicted that she would travel. It hadn't happened in nearly five years and he'd let himself get comfortable in that knowledge so he really had no one to blame but himself.
So he stayed up, silently watching over his family until it was time to get Luka and Rory ready for preschool. He eased into their room, Rory just beginning to stir as he made his way over to his son. Normally Luka was an early bird already alert and ready to start the day by the time Jaime or Rachel came to wake them up but today he was a little sluggish due to his cold.
"Shōko." Jaime called, gently brushing some of the hair off of Luka's forehead to check his temperature. His fever had broken sometime during the night before but Jaime wasn't sure if he was quite up to going back to school. "Do you want to stay home today?"
Luka opened his eyes at his father's question, his gaze immediately searching out Rory's. Jaime knew exactly what was going through his son's head as he watched him. If Luka stayed home, it would be the first time he and Rory were separated for more than a couple of hours. Jaime watched his children come to some sort of silent agreement before Luka shook his head.
"No Daddy, I'm fine."
Jaime nodded, completely understanding. He'd never doubted Luka's love for Rory but now he was certain that his son would always look out for his sister. Decision made Jaime went helping both children get ready for school, and while they donned their bookbags, dinosaurs for Rory and power rangers for Luka, Jaime slid into his and Rachel's room.
She was still sleeping which was no surprise considering her journey so he just left a bottle of water and a few aspirin on her bedside table with a note stating that he was taking the kids to school and that he'd be back soon. Just as he was turning to leave he stopped. Gently pushing her bangs out of the way he leaned down to place a soft lingering kiss on her forehead.
"I love you." He whispered before he was walking out the door, his children in hand.
