Jaime smiled and leaned in to press a kiss to her forehead in an attempt to hide how forced it was or the sorrow that was steadily building within him. Didn't she understand that he didn't want to get away from her or their kids? All he wanted was her and for things to go back to the way they used to be. But he didn't know how to make her see that. Not now when her focus was elsewhere.
"It's okay. I was scared too, but you don't have to worry anymore, about the kids or me. I won't leave again." He kissed her again before pushing to his feet. He laughed lightly. "I still reek of stale beer and cigarette smoke so I'm going to take a shower."
He stopped a few feet away, his back to her as he thought about what to say.
"I don't mean to keep things from you, it just turns out that way sometimes." Finally he looked over his shoulder to give her a genuine smile. "I love you, always."
