Who: Claire and Dean, then others later. Will update.
What: Welcome a new Winchester
Where: Their apartment, then the hospital
When: Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon
Rating: Birth stuff. LOTS of swearing.
Claire didn't look it to most folks who saw her on the street, but the last couple weeks had been a complete shit-show on her nerves. For a while, dealing with her pregnancy had become a new routine, especially after the nausea tapered off. Besides all the weird shit that came with living on the Island (most of which she'd become cynically used to by now anyway), her life had become a predictable series of doctor visits, strange cravings, and body aches. Also very sudden and urgent trips to the bathroom. For the last two months, Jack had been doing pull-ups with her ribs and playing soccer with her bladder. By now he was so big, Claire could lay in the big recliner in the living room and watch her unborn son twist and turn under her beach-ball sized belly. More than once, she'd compared him to an alien parasite, with all the love in the world, of course. Occasionally to gross-out company.
But eventually the routine had started to take a back seat to the impending arrival, and all of Claire's initial fears about being a parent began to resurface- and not just the 'normal' parent nerves. Dean knew all too well what she was terrified of, with her personal demons, their shared 'line of work'... not to mention the whole Messiah nightmare. Combined with some wicked hormones and her natural tendency to push people away when she was insecure, Claire knew she hadn't been the best company lately. She'd even barked at Dean on a fairly regular basis- and always felt like garbage afterward, which would trigger a hormonal sob-fest when she found herself alone.
But there were also the good things... The way Dean looked when she caught him gazing at her swollen stomach, especially when his son kicked or moved under his hand. The way she smiled when she thought about what Jack would look like when he was born, or in a year. Or five. Or ten. And then there was the wedding she'd been (passively) planning...
In short, Claire was both hating this pregnancy and dreading its end with equal neurotic enthusiasm. She'd read every book she could find on parenting- or more accurately, read the first chapter of every book (except the one about the importance of sleep- that one she sped through cover to cover), but still had no idea what to expect.
Least of all the sudden intense pressure-pain that shot from her lower back and around to the deepest part of her core.
"Uh-fuck!" she gritted out through her teeth to the sound of her ice cream spoon clanging to the floor so she could grab the counter ledge. It was dark- the middle of the night, and they'd just gone to sleep a few hours ago. Or rather, Dean had gone to sleep while Claire leaned against a pillow and headboard because if she laid flat, the heartburn would kick in.
