Of all the times she'd heard about people disappearing, of all the loss she'd seen others go through, nothing compared to how it felt. Sook was a ghost when she was by herself, alone at night in her room with a half-built crib by the end of her bed and a pile of hand-me-downs for newborns. She couldn't look Adele in the eye without feeling a deep, cutting guilt at having let her down. Nigel was... gone. Just gone. Hannibal too. It was like the island was punishing her and her daughter by reaping souls nearest to them. Sook was terrified about losing Izzy, losing her nieces or nephews, Jake and Tom, god, would it even try and take her unborn baby?
Since it happened, she hadn't slept. She'd rocked a weeping Adele to sleep, took care of her daughter and just laid under her own covers praying for real sleep to take her away into a better world. It never happened. She'd lost too much all at once and the fear was making her terrified. Every hour she checked on Adele to make sure she was there, she rubbed her baby bump to feel for the movements that would calm her mind for a moment. The calm didn't last long.
She was beginning to hate the walls of her room, hate the crib and the house and the whole island. Sook checked on Adele once more before she snuck down to the kitchen to look in the fridge, the harsh light stinging her eyes in the near dark.
It stared at her in the fridge. Pecan pie. Gran's recipe. Sook froze on the spot as sobs of grief racked her exhausted body, a hand clapped to her mouth so she didn't wake anyone. Nothing would feel right ever again.
