Being near people turned out to be a rotten idea. Her mental barriers were being obliterated day by day, brick by brick as the demonic voices whispered into other people's ears and then into her own. It was a cacophonous overgrown vine of panic and fear, mounting and growing slowly. Sookie held no fear walking through the fog, her brain far too used to the presence of other people's thoughts. She'd even started talking back to them as she walked to get supplies, having managed to slip away from Nigel to make her way to a store.
The only problem was navigating. The dense fog was too thick to see most landmarks (there weren't many to begin with anyway) and - with a backpack full of food - she was lost. There were stones beneath her feet, worn down by other people's foot prints before her so she figured she must be close to a main path. Another ten minutes walking straight led her to the a crack of branches beneath her feet, moist leaves and the stench of decay.
OH MY GOD a voice reverberated through her head. I'm sssoorry, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it, I didn't mean it. I'm gonna die! That voice... it sounded like Abigail, maybe. It was so clear, so sure, it was identical.
A scream pierced through the fog and a call for help out loud and Sook ran towards it unthinkingly, following where it was coming from and sprinting. "ABIGAIL!" she cried out, going deeper into the forest, "ABIGAIL!!!" Sook ran around for what could have been hours or minutes before she felt searing stings on her arm and pressed her hand to a tree trunk. "Oh sweet lord..." she stumbled back, whipping around at blow after stinging blow. "Abigail!" she screamed out for her friend, the palm that had touched the tree peppered in sticky dried blood. Sook knew it wasn't her own.
