Jake was exhausted. He hadn't slept since he'd got back from Sook's place, and he'd been in the Avatar for most of that time - he'd forced himself to take breaks a couple of times, so he could get to the bathroom and once he managed to get something quick to eat - because if Banshee was left alone for anything longer than five or ten minutes, he started to panic, and he couldn't get sleep when the Ikran slept because Banshee was sleeping in fits and starts. Even with the Avatar there beside him, Banshee knew when it was empty. Normally, tsaheylu was effortless and he could share thoughts and memories with his ikran as easily as breathing, but this concentrated effort of forcing himself to be calm and to keep Banshee from thinking about what surrounded them was beyond tiring. Hopefully, this thing only lasted for a couple days.
He limped back into the room with the link unit, his arm and leg throbbing from where he'd fallen, and pushed himself up onto the bed. He quickly programmed the unit for delayed linking and then lay down, pulling the lid down over him. The temptation to just close his eyes and drift off was so damn strong, but he could feel the panic in the back of his mind starting to build again, so he let himself tumble down through the link and opened his eyes halfway up a tree with a fretting ikran in the branches above him.
"Hey, I'm back," he said just as Banshee stuck his head down low to check on him. "I told you I wouldn't be long." He reached up and rubbed at the ikran's jaw, biting back on a yawn as he did so. He was so damn tired.
