Who: Aaron Cross
Where: The church graveyard
What: Burying Marta and saying goodbye
When: Wednesday 2nd October
Rating: Depends on the feels
Open: Yes, open for multiple threads
Status: On going/narrative/open

It was too beautiful a day to be burying the only girl he'd ever love. He had been seethingly angry for days, and honestly he still was angry but that had to be put to one side and filtered away for this day. This day was for her and her alone. He wore the only suit he owned, pitch black and fitted but her glasses were tucked into his handkerchief pocket, over his heart. He'd already placed her inside the grave and looked around at the turn out. He hadn't expected much, honestly. "Marta was... the most brilliant woman I knew. She changed me in more ways than one, in more than two." He said confidently with a lull in his tone. "She risked everything to stay with me, even when she could have left, had a new life. But it killed her in the end." he swallowed and picked up the shovel.

He couldn't watch the first few shovel fulls of dirt on top of her body, wrapped in the best linens with flowers on top of her. He had to do this right, do right by her before he got back to drinking himself stupid and finding the people who killed her. He gripped the shovel with an iron fist and took a deep breath. "She'd hate me for mentioning God in this..." he chuckled dryly, "But if there is a Heaven, she's there trying to scientifically disprove its existence." Aaron gritted his jaw tightly and looked down into her half-empty grave, unable to move away from the spot. She needed to be done right by. He'd failed her once but he wouldn't do it again.

As the soil was being returned to the grave Cassandra stepped forward, crouched down and lightly tossed a small round object down on top of the swaddled body. Anyone close enough to see where it landed would noticed the 'Seal of Solomon' engraved into the face of what looked like a flat pebble, small veins of white visible in the etched furrows. After a moments pause she stood again and moved back into the group of people surrounding the grave.

Juliet didn't usually go to funerals. She usually saw them as a notch in the demon world's belt, instead of hers, so she had usually moved on, or gone looking for something else. But Cass had said they should all go, and Auggie had agreed, and set up the systems to send them any information if Hummingbird came across anything.

She didn't know either the woman being buried, or the man who spoke, but she could see how badly her death was affecting him. And she couldn't help but smile as his comment about her being in heaven and trying to disprove its existence. Humour was always a good way to deflect pain.

She watched Cass walk up to the grave and drop something in, wondering what it was and craning her neck to take a look. Just before a shovel full of soil covered it she saw the talisman and blinked, looking at the woman and wondering where she'd picked that up from, storing it away as something she'd look into later.

Looking around she wondered if Izzy was going to be there, worried that her friend might be taking this a little too close and believe the same could happen to Tommy. She slipped her hand in her pocket and partially pulled her communicator out of her pocket, scrolled and saw Tommy's name still there and slipped it back in again, turning her attention back to who was there, and looking for Izzy.

Izzy wasn't particularly keen on funerals. The last one she'd attended had been her mother's, and seeing the wrapped body down in the grave only brought back the memories of that time. It didn't help that Tom was still out there, missing, and they had no idea where he was.

She didn't know how she felt about Tom, but she didn't want him dead or hurt. At one point Izzy was pretty sure she was falling in love with him, then he'd turned all asshole on her suddenly before he vanished. Now she had two adult or nearly adult children running around that were part of both of them and she had no idea what to do or how she should be feeling about the situation.

Juliet finally saw who she was looking out for and slowly backed out of the group gathered around the grave, making her way around the outside of them, before reaching in silently and tugging lightly on the sleeve of Izzy's jacket.

Izzy turned at the tug on her sleeve and saw her friend. A brief smile appeared on her face before it faded to the more introspective expression she'd been wearing before Juliet made her presence known.

Juliet hooked her arm through her friend's, waiting with her as everyone went through their processes of saying goodbye.

Izzy waited in silence for the ceremony to end and then excused herself after paying her condolences to the grieving boyfriend. She hadn't known either of them but had seen the posts on the network.

The girls didn't seem to need her help, hell, Rachel was as old as she was! Izzy felt completely at sea on this.

She turned to Juliet. "So, am I cracking up yet?"

Jake was wearing a suit. He was even wearing a tie. He couldn't remember the last time he'd gotten dressed up like this, but really, that was nowhere near important.

He watched Aaron as he stood in front of everyone and spoke, only ducking his head when his friend went quiet. He wanted to look around for Neytiri, but he just kept his head down and muttered under his breath in Na'vi, asking Eywa to look after Marta for Aaron. He had no time for the Human God, but he knew Eywa existed. And She liked him, which didn't hurt.

Lifting his head again, he pushed his chair forward and threw a few flowers into the grave; they were some of the first things he'd grown after he arrived on the island. He didn't know what they were called, but that didn't really matter. "Eywa ngahu," he said softly, and then moved back to where he'd been before.

Aaron? and Laura

As promised Laura was there. She had done what needed to be done. What had to be done. Killed most of those responsible, saved the higher ups for something more explosive. Bound and gagged, with no escape available. She didn't even give them the option of suicide before the button could be pushed.

Stoically she stood back, watching as Aaron did what had to be one of the hardest things he'd had to do, thus far. She was dressed in simple black, which was nearly her day-to-day, though this was more cotton and wool, rather than leather. Trousers, black shirt, and blazer. Hidden within the pockets items she'd brought to gift the mourning man. Knowing nothing could bring Marta back. But hopefully vengeance would aid in healing.

Aaron knew he owed Laura a lot for what she'd accomplished on his behalf. It should have been his responsibility to do what needed to be done and take care of the bastards that killed Marta. They deserved whatever punishment Laura had dealt out and probably more besides.

He kept shovelling the dirt on top of Marta's body until it was no longer visible. He wiped his brow as he finished and stepped back from the grave, tears unshed in his eyes. "I just want to thank you for coming," he said to Laura as people milled around. "I know what you did, I can't repay."

"You do not have to. I did not... do it all." Cryptic, she knew. Laura did not do cryptic well. Bright green eyes rose to attempt to meet his, as she drew out the burn phone and three thumb drives. "I saved the rest for you. And the man you requested is through the door, in one of the offices of Stark Tower. Jarvis has been given instructions to only allow you and Tony Stark inside." She couldn't keep the owner of the tower out, now could she?

Aaron took the drives and the photo, giving them a brief eye before slipping them into his jacket pocket. He wondered what to do to Byer himself now that he was locked away, safe away from Marta but he knew the man was tricky. "Thank you. I'm not sure it's safe for me to be in the same room with the man who gave the order to hunt her down. I promised her that I'd do right by her."

"The phone will explode the building that the orchestrators are currently held captive within. You simply have to step outside the door and press redial and send. And it will collapse the entire building. Without risk to civilians." She wouldn't go into detail as to what she'd done. There was no reason for him to know the gory details. It took all the will she had not to go cold on the subject. "The thumb drives have information on all the other agents, some they have murdered in cold blood.

But... If you need aid with him, I will join you." And she would torture the man if he asked.

He listened intently to her instruction, the itch to destroy and wreak havoc on the men responsible too much of a temptation to pass up. Aaron nodded in acknowledgement of her gift and looked at her. She could have made a better agent than he'd ever known but he wasn't with that life anymore. "I'll make sure this all gets dealt with. I can contact you if I need help with Byer, the man is one of the most self-involved government cretins you'd ever meet. Convinced he has no hand in this."

Aaron looked down at the fresh grave and back up at Laura, "I trust you'll keep this information to yourself for the time being?"

Neytiri sat, cross-legged, away from the main group, beneath a large tree whose roots were big and breaking through the ground beneath the canopy of leaves. She had arrived after the people had gathered around the dug hole and watched as the man she had met at the gym, Aaron, talked. Jake had explained to her how they sky-people dealt with death, and it was strange to her, but she said she would come. She'd gone out to the grove that morning and had found the plant she wanted for Aaron, it was sitting in the cupped palm she had resting on her knee. She was waiting until the soil was returned before taking it to Aaron.

After talking to Laura and receiving her offering, Aaron saw Neytiri beneath one of the oldest trees on the island. It was brilliant for climbing, he knew for a fact. Most people had disappeared by the time he finally looked at Neytiri with the plant in her hands and Aaron began to lay the tributes to Marta on top of her filled grave, in place of a headstone.

When the people started moving away Neytiri saw Jake, her face brightening a little when she saw him waiting at the edge of the grave. She knew he respected Aaron, and had been affected by the man's loss of his partner, and wasn't surprised to see him waiting with his friend.

Slowly she rose, and in a few strides crossed the grassed area, crouching down to kneel next to Jake when she reached the grave, nodding to him silently so as not to intrude on Aaron. The plant was still nestled in the palm of her hand, the other hand resting on her thigh.

Aaron was crouching next to the grave in silence, making sure everything was in place. He'd noticed a few people give things for him to put on her grave and he couldn't find the words to express his gratitude for it. Neytiri's plant in her hand looked like nothing from this earth but he had no doubt it was important. He learned quickly that everything in nature was of importance to the Na'vi and he didn't want to disrespect that when she'd shown her reverence just by being here.

He looked up when he was ready, "Is that for her?" he asked Neytiri softly, looking at her directly.

Neytiri nodded, extending her arm. "It is from my world," she said to Aaron, and with a lowering of her eyes, looking at Jake for a moment, "our home, of The People." Her long fingers uncurled from their cupping of the small plant. "For you, for her, from Eywa."

Aaron looked from her to the plant. He knew Eywa was her version of God and he knew better than to ask about it so he just made a little divot in the soil for the plant at the head of Marta's grave for it, "Thank you, for that. I think she would have loved it." he muttered.

Rachel had dressed in a plain black pantsuit that was tailored perfectly. She hadn't known Marta, really, but she knew Aaron and would be there for him no matter what. She couldn't help the tears that silently fell because of the pain in Aaron's voice. She prayed that she never had to know heartbreak like that. She wrapped her arms around herself and just stood there, being there for the man that was helping her uncle.

Richie knew Aaron didn't know him, but when Cass had suggested that they all should attend out of respect for both Aaron and Marta, he hadn't argued. He'd seen Rachel arrive and had waited until Aaron had finished speaking before making his way around to Rachel. He walked up silently beside her, saw the look on her face and slipped his arm around her shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze.
